About Simon and Barbara Howell

I am a retired solicitor and wife was a community Occupational therapist working in the Purbeck area, which she knew well and which we both love. Following my mother-in-law's death we bought and restored the cottage -14 years ago-, doing much of the work ourselves and using local expertise to help! We continue to look for ways to improve and enjoy it -spending time there ourselves and seeing our 3 sons and their families -8 grandchildren and 3 dogs between them! -enjoying it too. We looked after the garden for many years when we lived in Poole but now are more remote living in Taunton and usually only able to come down once a month. We have a gardener to ensure the lawn is cut and to tend the plants - When we lived in Poole we felt privileged to have access to both seaside and country so for us this village location is ideal and we still visit to stay to enjoy the cottage ourselves and our family regularly book it as well. The garden is Dog Proof and as long as children do not climb on the low stone walls between the patio and lawn (none have as yet) safe for children and we have the luxury of being able to park two cars albeit one a small one with care in an area where car parking is otherwise hard to come by.Enjoy being there!!!

Simon and Barbara Howell purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Simon and Barbara Howell chose Winfrith Newburgh

Knowing the area well we fell in love with this particular village and were thrilled at the opportunity to buy 'The Old Bakehouse' For us it was ideally situated - a vibrant village with a village hall used regularly for 'events' with a working village store and post office -pubs within walking distance and walks and cycle rides without the need to use our car. We are able to use the local bus service 400yds away - and the nearest train station is only 3 miles away -Waterloo -Weymouth. To be within easy reach of the Jurassic coast - yet be in the Hardy countryside, with it's woods and rivers gives us great opportunites of exploring beautiful areas. We can get away from crowds - but we can enjoy market towns, historic buildings and gardens too, and have access to centres of entertainment

What makes this cottage unique

Quiet. Pretty Garden. Easy access to beaches. We both love sitting on our comfortable leather sofas looking out at our garden -and listening, with the French door open -to the abundant bird song - glass of wine in hand ! Weather permitting - and we do tend to get some of the best of the sunshine in Britain - we love eating out on our patio, and reading on our garden chairs.

For us it's a real break from routine and living opposite a field where there are horses feels like true country living. The village shop -just 4 minutes walk away is a superb treat -morning paper, fresh farm eggs etc. ! We've caught the local bus - with our bus passes - or used our bikes to avoid using our car - beautiful walks from the cottage - or within a short car ride. There are gardens, houses, markets to visit and a local gaslit cinema in Wareham.

Memorable Dorset holiday staying at the Old Bakehouse

  • 5 of 5

We had a very comfortable warm stay at the Old Bakehouse where the owners have made considerable effort to provide a home away from home. A 'welcome' tray greeted us, Christmas decorations were in place and this well appointed cottage was a wonderful base to explore the Dorset coast. The owners provided lots of information about the local area supported by helpful hints for other guests. I would highly recommend this cottage.

Delightful vacation rental in a quiet country setting yet close to everything

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Bakehouse. We're an American couple travelling from California and found the Bakehouse spacious, clean and well-equipped to meet our needs. It is located in a quiet country setting but still close to main road (A352), and offering easy access to nearby sights. Directions and parking are easy. Simon and Barbara were very responsive to questions, both during the reservation process and after we checked in. We can highly recommend the Bakehouse and would definitely stay there again.

An absolutely gorgeous cottage perfectly located for exploring Dorset. Well equipped and spacious.

What a wonderful week! This cottage is situated on a very quiet lane with beautiful footpaths from the door. Only 5 minutes drive to Durdle Door, 10 to Lulworth Cove and Maiden Castle (visit the first 2 sites mid-week if you can!) There is a well stocked independent village shop and a supermarket in Dorchester.

We didn't use it because it was summer but there is a log burner in the living room with fuel and helpful instructions! The garden is well enclosed and very pretty.

Before our visit we had excellent communication from the owners who were very happy to answer questions.

This cottage was particularly good for us because there is a mainline railway station in Wool.

Highlights of the holiday were spotting red squirrals on Brownsea Island and fossil hunting in Charmouth.

We would love to stay here again!

Had a fantastic holiday at the old bakehouse. It is very clean and we had everything we needed. Brilliant attention to detail by the owners. Great country location but still close to the beaches and main roads. We would definitely stay here again. Very good communication from owners too.
