About Jacquie and Kevin Mitchell

Hi; We are keen gardeners and live next door. We also enjoy walking, music, Yoga, reading and cooking. Kevin is a Physics Teacher and I work in Communications. We are very friendly a little eccentric, and can often be seen pottering about or relaxing in the garden, which is shared with Windchimes. We love meeting new people and are always happy to chat, or respect your privacy as you wish. We look forward to welcoming you to our little bit of heaven.

Why Jacquie and Kevin Mitchell chose Torbay

Windchimes was converted from a former hayloft. We love the fact that Windchimes offers a slice of history married with modern and stylish design. It's really well located for visiting lots of attractions nearby, yet you wouldn't know it as the cottage is tucked away in pretty communal gardens, shared with us the owners - who live next door.

What makes this cottage unique

Visitors often gasp with delight when they see Windchimes in the flesh. A character little cottage built of stone, it has a truly romantic, cosy interior with a pretty attractive mezzanine bedroom. It's in walking distance of beaches, restaurants and attractions yet quietly located in leafy upmarket part of Torquay.

A well deserved cup of tea / coffee is yours on arrival.

Ask us about anything that makes your holiday more perfect - information on horse riding, cycling, restaurants coastal or Dartmoor walks - in fact anything that we can help you with, we will. We have been known to help organise a surprise honeymoon at Windchimes for newly weds.

Cute place to stay, bit to close the owners house

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Windchimes, it is small but compact and ideal for a base to travel around the area. There were a few cobwebs that really should have been cleaned but that didn't spoil our stay. The owners were friendly but I felt a bit uncomfortable with them being so close.

Owner's Response: Dear Sarah; Thank You so much for your review. It was a pleasure to meet you both. Windchimes is very tiny and cosy, and like you say is a great base for exploring Torquay, South Devon, and all the lovely coastal paths. Windchimes Hayloft is right next to our home - as shown in the photos, and shares our garden so won't suit those looking for more seclusion and privacy. It is very popular with visitors from Europe who are familiar with, and like Gite style accommodation, as well as visitors from the USA, Australia and Canada. Sitting in the garden, country style, Windchimes is a character cottage, converted from a former hayloft, so the beams do attract cobwebs - even after cleaning. This is often the case with older, period buildings. Thanks again for your review. It was great to meet you both, and are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay. All the best. Jacquie and Kevin xx

Cosy cottage with lovely gardens

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed a lovely week in Devon at the Windchimes cottage the location was excellent. The cottage was cosy with a comfy bed and good shower facilities. The service from the owners was excellent from the original booking and enquiry through to the warm welcome and looking after us during our stay. We would recommend the cottage to those so long as they are able to manage stairs and hills etc. We especially enjoyed our visits to Brixham via the ferry, Canonteign Falls for tranquility and peace, Kents Cavern caves a short walk away and Torquay harbour to eat and relax in the evening. We look forward to spending another week in this part of the country some time as there were many other places we would like to visit.

Owner's Response: Dear Jeannette; Thank You very much for your lovely review. We are delighted that you enjoyed your second visit to Windchimes, and look forward to seeing you again in the future. Because we are constantly looking to add additional touches to our cosy little cottage, a new ladder radiator is being installed in the shower room, with plans for a new carpet in the lounge, ready for the 2015 season All the best and thanks again Jacquie at Windchimes Hayloft

Great Location but very small

  • 2 of 5

Windchimes is described as small and small it is! We were both really surprised at the lack of headroom in the bedroom, I am 5'2" and I could barely stand up, finding that I even had to lay on the bed to get dressed. The stairs are described as open tread and steep and not suitable for the less mobile which is accurate. However, being a fit able-bodied couple we found them extremely daunting, especially if you need to take a trip to the loo downstairs in the middle of the night! The cottage did smell quite musty but I think this may be because it seems to be built partially underground or against an outside wall. We also found that the property was located very close to the owners own home so we did not find sitting in their beautiful garden very relaxing. On the plus side Jacquie and Kevin were very welcoming, attentive hosts and Jacquie bakes a mean cake - GBBO look out!

Torquay town is within easy walking distance (wear flat or sensible shoes - my heels stayed in the car) and we had some amazing meals in some amazing restuarants. On our first night we ate at The Rockfish Fish & Chip Restaurant on the harbour front, it is fantastic and they cater for ceoliacs, we had a lovely Italian at Bianco's on Torwood Street and Yim Sung, also on Torwood Street served us the best chinese we have ever tasted - they also cater for coeliacs! We went to the Hole in the Wall, the oldest pub in Torquay for Sunday lunch and, again we were not disappointed!

If you enjoy walking there are plenty of coastal walks, our favourite being to Babbacombe where we had a fabulous lunch looking over the bay at The Cary Arms - not cheap but worth it!

To sum it all up, we had a wonderful break in sunny Torquay. We were disappointed with the cottage, but if you don't mind crouching down in bedroom it is perfectly situated and adequate for a short break. Oh, and beware of those stairs fit or otherwise! Also, as I said before the owners were great hosts and I hope that they don't take this review as being too negative as we both had a wonderful time.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your candid review. Windchimes Hayloft, is converted from an original hayloft. It has beams, and low headroom in the romantic mezzanine bedroom, which is accessed by a steep open tread staircase, so is indeed not suited to those with mobility problems. But it is not musty! The shower room does not have a window, but has a fan, activated by the switch for the overhead lights, to keep it well ventilated. The cottage has an insulated roof, floor and walls to keep it warm and cosy. In hot weather to avoid getting over warm, one needs to open the windows as the cottage is south facing. The cottage is extremely quirky and filled with extra touches. It is located adjacent to our home, as indicated, and the garden is shared with us, so those wanting more privacy may prefer a cottage with it's own garden, which we appreciate. Our cute cottage is very tiny. This is reflected in the price. Everything in it is of good quality. We welcome our guests with a bottle of bubbly and home made cake. Quietly situated, the cottage is within walking distance of the town, harbour and local beaches. Torquay is built on seven hills, so sensible shoes for getting around on foot is a good option. The cottage is very much suited to walkers, and those wanting a quiet break. We very much welcome the candid comments - it helps people to make an informed decision about whether Windchimes Hayloft is for them. We've had many many lovely comments about the cottage, and several people booking return trips, and are truly not offended by the remarks. The age of those visiting the cottage ranges from 18 to 70 - indicating how fitness levels have changed for the better, which is brilliant. We clearly indicate in the property information, that the cottage is located, Gite style, next to our home. Windchimes Hayloft is an upmarket, quirky character cottage, offered at a reasonable price, to reflect its tiny size. We will review the property information, to make sure that this is clear to our guests - almost all of whom, have loved and appreciated it, with many wishing to return. Thanks again for your comments. We urge readers to look at other reviews we have received from our many delightful and happy guests.

Lovely

The Hayloft and gardens are lovely. The muffins and wine were a thoughtful treat on our arrival. The owners are very friendly and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay.

Lots of places to visit in walking distance, we never used our car while we were there.
