About the property

House in Crackington Haven, Nr. Bude, Cornwall - Close To Friendly Surfing Beach And Coastal Path In Wonderfully Unspoilt Corner Of North Cornwall

Crackington Vean is a home from home: a very attractive, traditional Cornish house in an elevated position with large garden and spectacular views. A short walk down through a wooded valley brings you to the sandy surfing beach of Crackington Haven with its friendly cafés, direct access to the Coastal Path, and a clifftop tennis court! The house has just been completely refurbished to provide excellent accommodation, to which family antiques and pictures add special character. The spacious sitting-room has floor-to-ceiling windows, leather sofas and a wood burning stove; a well-equipped fitted kitchen leads directly into a dining-room with large oak table; upstairs, the master bedroom has a super-king-size bed and en suite; two further large bedrooms, plus family bathroom. The basement has a large double bedroom, walk-in shower and wetsuit drying area. Post Office Stores a 5-minute walk away, good local pubs, and nearby the seaside town of Bude and long surfing sands of Widemouth Bay.

About Eugenie Woodhouse

We live near Cambridge in the U.K., but all enjoy spending as much time in Cornwall as possible. We hope that Crackington Vean will provide a haven of fun and freedom for generations to come, both for the family and for our visitors.

Eugenie Woodhouse purchased this house in 2011

Why Eugenie Woodhouse chose Cornwall

We always found it hard to drag ourselves away from a summer holiday in Cornwall - so hard, in fact, that we decided we would like to buy a house down there - but which area to choose? We came across Crackington Haven by chance in 2011, and instantly fell in love with its contrasting landscapes: on the one hand, gentle green rolling pasture land, and on the other, wild, windswept rugged cliffs where you can feel as remote as if you were in the Outer Hebrides. Add to that a friendly village and sandy surfing beach, and we really felt we had struck gold. We were fortunate to find a lovely family home for sale and have spent the last year carefully renovating it, with the intention of one day moving there permanently. In the meantime, we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do.

What makes this house unique

The house is spacious, comfortable and homely, and because we intend to live here one day, we have taken special care to transform it into a proper family house, with brand new kitchen, painted wooden floors, comfortable beds and sofas, family antiques and portraits, and attractive soft furnishings. In the basement we have created a special area with underfloor heating for drying out wetsuits, and a walk-in shower to avoid sand being trodden all over the house (which has been the sorry but inevitable case in houses we have rented in the past). The garden is large and secure, so children can run wild in it - they can also nip up to the village stores in 5 minutes to collect your pasties for lunch. The sandy beach, a mile from the house, is perfect for bucket and spade as well as surfing.

A fantastic house

  • 5 of 5

The adults and children alike had a fantastic week at this lovely house. It is clean, nicely furnished and well equipped. I could not fault it. There is plenty of space both inside and out and the house is in a great location having a small shop and basic bus service within walking distance. The beach with a pub and two cafes is reachable on foot too.

The house is one mile from the beach - either a pleasant 15 minute walk down the hill through a wooded valley, or a 3 minute drive down the lane. Wetsuit hire is available and the beach is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards during the summer months.

Further Details:

There is a very well-stocked Post Office/village store in the village, with fresh pasties delivered each morning, and excellent home-cooked curry takeaways. Crackington Haven beach has two cafes and a pub. The Wainhouse Inn (5 mins drive) serves excellent food. Fantastic Fish and Chips in Camelford (10 mins drive). Bude (15 mins) has plenty of shops, restaurants and supermarkets. The area is fantastic for walkers, both inland and on the Coast Path. Nearby High Cliff is said to be the highest cliff in England and has wonderful views down the rugged coastline. There are several family surfing beaches within easy reach, manned by RNLI lifeguards during the summer; the ancient castle of Tintagel, birthplace of the legendary King Arthur, is well worth a visit. Perched high on the cliffs, the ruins are fascinating and the views breathtaking. Wild moorland ponies roam the hillside of Rough Tor on Bodmin Moor, a neolithic site with amazing rock formations and panoramic views - a perfect picnic spot. Tennis available on the beach at Crackington; golf and indoor swimming pool at Bude.
