House in Mordington, near Berwick Upon Tweed, Northumberland, England - Peaceful Location In A Rural Hamlet 10 Minutes By Car To The Coast And To Berwick Upon Tweed

The Old School dates back to the mid-19th Century and is a grade 2 listed building. It was converted in 2006 after many years as a School (until the 2nd World War) village hall and community centre. It retains many of it’s original features including wood panelling and large sash windows. The property offers tastefully appointed and spacious living and sleeping accommodation for 8 to 10 people. The main house has 3 bedrooms (2 doubles and a twin). There is also a self contained ‘flat’ to the rear of the main house providing spacious accommodation for 2 to 4 people which is ideal for a family group. The internal layout of the main house and flat is modern and spacious. There is a large modern oak kitchen/breakfast room, 3 bathrooms and a large open plan wood panelled lounge and dining room. The house and flat benefit from central heating. Light, spacious, luxurious and full of character and charm, The Old School is designed to make your stay comfortable, fun and memorable.

About Helen Dempster

Andrew is an Architect living in Manchester and Helen recently retired. We bought Casa del Suenos in December 2014 as a holiday home where we could relax and escape the pressures of work! We hope to spend many happy times there with family and friends in all seasons. We have started a programme of refurbishment to lovingly and sympathetically restore and enhance it to a very high standard. We made the decision to offer the property to rent and it will be available to rent from March 2015. We wanted to retain the use of it ourselves and also hope that people who rent it will be renting year after year as they too are charmed by the property and the area.... Year purchased: 2014.

Helen Dempster purchased this house in 2007

Why Helen Dempster chose Northumberland Coast

The location of the Old School is unique as it combines the peace and tranquillity of the Scottish Borders countryside, yet is within easy reach of the historic town of Berwick Upon Tweed and the magnificent North Northumberland Coastline.

We were attracted to the area because of the variety of things to do in all seasons and weather. For example coastal and inland walks in nearby towns, countryside and on the coast. Enchanting castles and spectacular beaches are close by, including Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle which are only 20 minutes drive away. There is fishing on the Tweed, game shooting, Scuba Diving in nearby St Abbs and golf on a variety of links or inland courses. We often just chill out and go for coffee and just relax....

with the advantage of ease of proximity

Teddy bear heaven

  • 5 of 5

A delightful and relaxing holiday home. The school house was excellent comfortable ,homely and had a very well equipped kitchen ! We were able to have family meals around the kitchen table and grown up meals in the dinning area (child free meals ! ) The little ones loved the cuddly toys especially the bears. Plenty of books and games to entertain everybody. The CD collection was enjoyed by my husband and son in law .In a beautiful situation between the borders of Scotland and England it is ideal for walkers and cyclists.

A lovely house in a lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house in a lovely setting. Extremely well appointed with everything you could need and more. The decoration and provisions are lavish and designer.

Eight of us stayed very comfortably for a week. The siting is perfect for visiting Edinburgh, Lindisfarne, Alnwick, Berwick, Bamburgh and numerous seaside towns - we did all this in a week. The weather wasn't always brilliant but it didn't matter when you had such a comfortable house to come back to.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Old School is in a great location to explore both Scotland and England. The home is in a very quiet area which was very nice to come back to after a long day of sightseeing. It is very clean and the kitchen has everything you could ever need. The rooms are spacious and there is a nice big family room with enough seating to all be together. Helen is lovely to deal with she is extremely efficient with emails and any information you may require. It was truly a wonderful experience for us with many happy memories.

Wonderful house, lovely owners!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as a family 7 adults and 2 children. The school house is stunning!!! We have rented many properties around the world and this is the best equipped home we have ever stayed in. The kitchen alone has every utensil and kitchen gadget you could ever need. The rest of the house is beautifully presented, immaculately clean and we felt right at home straightaway. The welcome basket was very much appreciated, with delicious home made cake, wine and other treats.

When booking the schoolhouse, Helen's communication was excellent, nothing was to much trouble and answered all emails promptly.

We wouldnt hesitate in recommending the property for any occasion.

The schoolhouse is ideally located to town and beaches, we had some great trips out.

Thankyou so much, you have a beautiful home!!!!

Many thanks for the use of your beautiful home.

The Hewson and Witham families.

While there is a bus service from the end of the road near the property into Berwick Upon Tweed, to get the best from your holiday in this primarily rural area a car is recommended.

There are Airports in Edinburgh and Newcastle approximately 1 hours drive from the Old School.

The Old School is 4 miles from Berwick Upon Tweed, 67 miles north of Newcastle and 53 miles south of Edinburgh.

It is approximately 40 minutes drive from Kelso, 50 minutes drive from Alnwick and 20 minutes drive to Bamburgh, Seahouses and Holy Island.

Further Details:

The North Northumberland Coast and South East Scottish Borders are rural and coastal areas of great natural beauty and tranquillity, yet are full of life and rich in history. There are plentiful attractions and activities of all types as well as numerous eateries.

Must see locations range from coastal beauty spots such as Tweedmouth, Coldingham (renowned for surfing), and Spittal (Victorian seaside village). Further afield are a variety of interesting and diverse Scottish border towns. These include Selkirk, Galashiels, Melrose, Kelso, Hawick and Peebles. Each of these towns have their own individual facilities and charm. For example, Kelso (35 minutes drive) has a well known racecourse and a wide range of country sports shops. The river Tweed offers first class salmon fishing, and several shooting estates.

The picturesque coastal village of St. Abbs some 10 miles north of Berwick is a major dive attraction and Coldingham Bay offers some of the best surfing in the UK.
