About William Keene

We have provided additional information that we think will be useful to your stay on https://www.facebook.com/florenceapartment and www.florenceapartments.co.uk

The apartment is in a 17th Century building and is owned by William’s family whose ancestors owned the English Pharmacy (Farmacia Inglese) on one of the main streets of Florence, via de’ Tornabuoni.

William’s grandparents left before the war and moved to England where they then set up many similar pharmacies in the City of London.

You can still see the Farmacia on via de’ Tornabuoni which has now been turned into a shoe shop, but all the original wooden display cabinets for the medicines and tinctures are still there.

We hope you will enjoy discovering this beautiful historic City and visit again.

Why William Keene chose Florence Historic Centre

This property is in the historical City centre close to the train and bus stations and has good local shops but also a short walk to the main tourist attractions. The river Arno is also very close by that provides wonderful views. The Westin Excelsior and St Regis hotels are nearby arguably the two best hotels in Florence. The Police station is in the same street that adds to the sense of security. The apartment with its period features provides a link with the past.

What makes this apartment unique

Central location allows you to walk to all the tourist sites. Speciality shops in the same street provides great food and fabulous restaurants. Car hire available in the same street with Hertz, Avis etc. Free unlimited WiFi. On first floor so only one flight of steps. Air conditioning & washing machine.

Our Florence apartment was a perfect home away from home. Clean and well stocked kitchen. The bathroom has a terrific shower!! The dining and sleeping areas gave us our own personal space when needed. I felt safe since the neighborhood is surrounded by quality shops & hotels (2 Best Westerns right around the corner) which gave us a true sense of security. The little family owned market just across the street provided fresh fruits, vegetables, beverages, cheeses, & meats for home cooked meals when we did't want to eat out. What I liked most was we were close to all of the galleries & sites we wanted to see, and some we hadn't planned on seeing. Florence is an easy city to get around in. You can visit all of the famous museums & cathedrals on foot since our apartment was in close proximity everthing. Our host gave us excellent directions to get to the apt from the terminal and we were in there and comfotable just minutes after our train arrived in the station. I really loved visiting Florence and staying at 74 Borgo Ognisannti. It was my favorite apartment & city of our 24 day tour to Paris, Rome & Florence.

Sincerely

Great location!

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was perfect for our family. It slept 2 adults and 2 teenagers comfortably. It is close to restaurants, markets, bakeries, shopping and points of interest. Beatrice who checked us in was so nice and helpful. The only downside is there are steep steps to get to the apartment so those with mobility problems should be aware. FYI- there is a Michelin rated restaurant across the street. The pastry shop right below the apartment has the most delicious goodies and the price was great. It was less expensive to run down every morning than buy groceries and prepare breakfast.

Perfect location. Very inventive photography.

  • 4 of 5

Very clean and in a fantastic location. Both the manager and cleaner were delightful ladies and couldn't have been more helpful. Water pressure good and plenty of hot water from the emersion heater in the bathroom. Easy walking distance to all major sights, bus and railway stations.Right over the top of a bakery and opposite one of the best restaurants on Tuscany, Il Profeta. Air conditioning worked well once my husband climbed up ladder and cleaned out the filter, which was a relief as temperatures were in the low to mid 30's for most of our stay and there is zero cross ventilation in the apartment. Free wifi worked well, but there's no usb recharger so you'll need something that plugs into an Italian socket.

Having arrived late and tired from a stay in an amazing apartment in Paris (have to admit at twice the price though), to say I was somewhat underwhelmed would be an understatement. However after a day or so I came around to the joys of climbing stairs almost as steep as a vertical ladder, getting caught in the spring back of the split front door, making coffee on a camping stove and slipping off the toilet seat, in favour of appreciating a comfortable bed, superb location and relatively low cost.

Whilst the photos on the website don't actually lie, they are somewhat inventive. The only natural light comes from the shuttered front window - the one in the kitchenette doesn't open, so we couldn't open the outside shutters to let in light. The electric lights don't make the apartment as bright as it appears in the photos and the shower screen has been removed for the bathroom shots. In reality one's knees are very close to the screen and I suspect larger people would have to sit sideways. There Is a small sofa bed but only 2 midgets could fit side by side and it's uncomfortable to sit on, so I hate to think what it would be like as a bed. No amenities other than half a toilet roll were provided so you'll need to pop to the nearby small supermarket for handsoap etc. Washing machine was great, but no dryer so I don't know what you'd do in cooler weather.

In summary. we'd probably stay there again for the location and low cost - after all we were pretty much only there to sleep, shower and change.

Owner's Response: Dear Tracy, good to hear that you found the apartment very clean, in a fantastic location, opposite what you consider one of the best restaurants in Tuscany. The air conditioning, free WiFi worked well and you appreciated the comfortable bed. The photographs show the double glazed windows in the kitchen and sitting room that open onto the single lane, one way street. The bathroom photograph shows that the shower door folds inwards as well as outwards. It has not been removed (as you claim) as it is still visible in the photograph. The photograph of the sitting room window open and kitchen shows behind the kitchen door, is a clothes airer / dryer (clothes horse) to use after using the washing machine in the kitchen. In addition it shows the microwave and fridge / freezer. kind regards William

Close to everything

  • 3 of 5

The photos of this apartment were a bit misleading, the apartment is a bit more rustic than what it appears. Beware, if you are elderly or have young children it is a challenge to get into the building. The entrance is a split door and only half of it opens, we had to turn sideways to get in through the doorway. Then we climbed steep stairs to the landing of the apartment.

The apartment suited our basic needs but we had to purchase items our first day there: tp, hand soap, etc. Lighting the stove was a challenge, we were provided with a lighter to light the old gas stove. A bit scary but we did it.

The hot water in the apartment was amazing, immediate hot water. The shower however could use a good scrubbing. We realize the building is old and can smell musty.

The apartment is quiet at night but if you want to rest during the day the street noise makes it impossible, mainly due to the motorcycles constantly riding down the street.

We hate to write a negative review but wish we would have known the downside of this apartment. The location is great to get around and it is near the train station. The restaurant across the street is very good also.

Owner's Response: Dear Patty, I read with interest your comments and would like to clarify some of your points. Both entrance doors open. You open one door with a key and pull down the latch at the top of the other door and lift up the latch at the bottom. There are approximately 20 steps to the apartment front door with handrails on both sides of the staircase. This is a self catering apartment so it is normal to purchase items for your stay. There is an electric microwave oven with grill and roasting facilities, in addition to the gas four ring hob, for cooking food bought from the very local shops outside in the single lane, one way street. Florence and the building is old and we have installed air conditioning, WiFi, double glazing, TV, DVD, oak flooring, fridge / freezer and washing machine in the apartment. kind regards William

Comfortable apartment, close to train station in Florence

  • 4 of 5

This apartment was very comfortable and convenient. It was an easy walk to the main train station in Florence (5-10 mins, which was great for our arrival & departure with luggage). Beatrice (who met us with the keys) was friendly & helpful. It was clean, roomy and had all the facilities we needed. There are excellent bakeries & a great small supermarket (with an excellent deli ) extremely close by. It is easy to walk most places in Florence so being a little out of the centre was no problem and when we didn't want to walk, there are many of the local buses that leave from right near the station. It is close to the river, so evening strolls down to & along the river were very pleasant.

On the down side: the street is quite busy, so traffic noise could be annoying with the windows open, so at night we slept with them closed & the reverse cycle airconditioner on. The apartment is on the 1st floor and the stairway from the narrow street door up to the first floor is very steep, which could be a problem for some.

Great apartment in a fabulous location

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I came to Florence for a few days over St Valentines day. The apartment did not disappoint and was located close to the railway station and river with the Ponte Vecchio and Effizi within a few minutes walk along the river. We had a lovely stay. The apartment was perfect and contained anything we needed. Even though we were late arriving the lady who checked us in could not have been more helpful or welcoming.

There is a bakery downstairs and grocery shops, cash machine and wine shops all within a few yards of the front door. Although we relied on the vast array of superb restaurants and bars for most or our catering needs!

I cannot recommend this apartment highly enough. We had a fantastic time.

Very comfortable and well positioned

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights in October 16. Very close to the train station which is great especially if you plan to visit Pisa or other surrounding towns. The apartment is full of character and very Florentine in style. The area is great. We walked everywhere but still felt we were a little away from the touristy area. There are many great places to eat very close by. You may read some negative stuff about this apartment in other reviews and they have some merit. The shower is not the best etc BUT what do people want for this price. It is worth every cent to stay here and I can sum it up in one word...bed! The bed is beautiful, comfortable, cosy and hard to leave! At the end of the day, that is all you really want! Watch the steep staircase leading to the apartment and make sure you use the lights to see your way up. Highly recommend this apartment.
