Farmhouse in Saint-Séverin, Charente, Poitou-Charentes, France - Beautiful, Tranquil Location Yet Only 20 Minutes Walk To Village With Good Local Amenities

IMAGINE approaching down our 400m drive and discovering at the end of your journey our 2 STOREY CONVERTED BARN, situated in a tranquil location surrounded by farmland, with beautiful views in all directions...especially in sunflower season.The house is adjacent to a similar property but has its own PRIVATE POOL (alarmed), large garden and private paved terraces to 2 sides, one facing the pool and covered by a porch to provide shade. Both lounging and alfresco dining on the terraces are catered for by good quality furniture and a large gas BBQ (gas provided). 8 sun loungers are available to tempt you into luxurious indolence! A covered car port provides shaded parking for 2 vehicles and incorporates a log store and lockable storeroom containing a freezer which guests can use.

Across the pool another small patio area surrounded by colourful flowers is perfect for morning coffee in sun or afternoon tea in shade. An old plough and a well (filled in for safety) complete the outside space in fine rustic French style…not counting the numerous sightings of wildlife of course!

INSIDE, the house is cool and shady with white walls, exposed stonework and original beams upstairs. The GROUND FLOOR is open plan with terracotta floor, comfortable seating around our original stone Charentaise fireplace, dining area to seat 8, very well equipped modern kitchen with integrated appliances, utility area with washing machine and condenser drier, and a shower room/WC. Most areas of the house are redecorated each spring.

UPSTAIRS, a light and airy furnished landing area leads to 4 tastefully appointed bedrooms each comfortably sleeping 2 and with lovely views, plus a second bathroom with large shower. A cot, high chair, stair gate and other baby equipment can be provided at no extra cost.

AMENITIES - Bedlinen, bath and pool towels are included in the rental as are pool and garden maintenance. There are table fans and hair driers in every bedroom, and a selection of books, games, DVDs, iPod dock and pool inflatables for guests' enjoyment. A WELCOME PACK is provided for every party of guests.

The SURROUNDING AREA is one of great natural beauty and historic interest. Our house is situated close to the Charente/Dordogne border, making it ideal for exploring the delights of both regions and enjoying the long hours of sunshine.The beaches of the Atlantic coast (e.g: La Rochelle and Royan) are around 2.5 hours drive away, achievable as a day trip but also great for an overnight stay, maybe if there are keen surfers in the family! River beaches with good facilities for families can be found at Aubeterre (6Km), St. Aulaye (15Km) and Grand Étang de la Jemaye (man-made lake beach around 25Km away).

The Dordogne region with its rivers, wooded hills and valleys, prehistoric caves, chateaux and so on is easily reached for days out, as are the great vineyards of the Bordeaux region and the distilleries around Cognac, with ample opportunities for wine and Pineau tastings. St. Emilion (a UNESCO world heritage site) is a must-see for wine lovers.

ANGOULÊME AND PÉRIGUEUX, the 2 regional capitals, are each about 45Km away and both have lovely old town quarters where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch at one of the many pavement cafes, indulging in one of the regional specialities such as foie gras. Each town also has big hypermarkets on the outskirts, plus lively street markets in town. In summer, various festivals take place in both large towns and many small villages, often with musical events, markets, funfairs, communal meals and the most spectacular firework displays after sunset.

For GOLF enthusiasts, Manoir de Longeveau Golf and Country Club is visible from our terrace, being only a 5 minute drive away if you feel energetic enough for a round of golf on this 9 hole course (English proprietors - also with TENNIS COURTS and seasonal social events open to non-members). 18 hole golf courses are to be found at Angoulême, Périgueux and further afield at Royan, Cognac and Bordeaux. Families with children should enjoy the MINI-GOLF course, located just outside St-Sęverin.

Further tennis courts can be found in St-Severin and beside the river at AUBETERRE-SUR-DRONNE (6Km), a listed medieval hillside village popular for its river beach, canoeing, nearby horse riding, fascinating monolithic church, craft shops, cafes and bars at which to enjoy a drink while people-watching in the pretty shady square or browsing the little Sunday morning market. In summer, look out for notices advertising concerts and events in the square or by the river.

RIBÉRAC (12Km) is our nearest market town with good facilities including a hypermarket and an excellent Friday morning street market. Bargain hunters will also find Lidl, Aldi and Netto!

There are plenty of great RESTAURANTS to suit all budgets (details of some of our favourites are included in guest information in our house), but with so much wonderful local produce to choose from why not just chill out round the pool and enjoy a BBQ while waiting to marvel at the incredible sunsets and amazing starry skies. If you're still awake after all that, why not enjoy a dip in our floodlit pool to top off another perfect day!

So much to do and see, but our home never fails to work its magic if it's peace and relaxation you're after.

About the Owner

Gary finally retired from his long career in construction consultancy in June 2015 while Linda has been retired from her career in social services management for several years, though has been subsequently busy doing work as a charity trustee, going to the gym and generally enjoying time to catch up with friends and family.

Both of us love to travel and still do so whenever we can tear ourselves away from the delights of Les Etangs! We spent several years living in south-east Asia after getting married and both our daughter and son were born during that time. 2015 saw us returning to Malaysia and Australia plus making our first trip to China, and our busy year finished on a high with our son's wedding in December.

Buying Les Étangs several years ago proved to be the perfect antidote to our busy professional and family lives and we've been pleased to be able to share its charms with friends and family, many of whom have returned several times.

Stunning, peaceful, tranquility...PERFECT!!!

We have recently returned from Les Etangs from minute one upon booking the communication from Linda and Gary has been first class doing all they can to ensure a great stay. We travelled 4 adults 2 children and we were all impressed with the high quality of the property and level of accomodation. There was a comprehensive information folder which proofed to be invaluable and many games , books etc to keep the children and adults occupied. This proved to be a great base as we explored the Dorgdone - Salat , Cahors ,Rocomador and many many other places we visited. We also spent many lazy days by the pool drinking wine eating outside watching the sun go down. The local village Aubeterre is a Jewel about 4km away and St Severin has all you need including a well stocked local spar with a butchers . All in all this was a fantastic family holiday owing A massive thank you to Linda and Gary for there excellent professsional service and first class communication . Thank you again for allowing us to rent your beautiful home.

Les Etangs is located in a rural area and it commands stunning views over gentle, rolling hills.

The property, both inside and outside, was spacious, spotless and extremely well equipped and the owners provided a comprehensively informative "help!" folder that catered for every eventuality.

The house easily accommodated the nine of us - 6 adults, 2 children and a baby.

We were blessed with glorious sunsets over the sunflowers and pollution free night skies.

We would definitely recommend Les Etangs; it made our family holiday so memorable.

The Property was lovely,clean and had everything you could possibly wish for! Set in beautiful surroundings and in a lovely area with lots of markets etc to visit.

Would recommend highly as we think it is the best holiday in France that we have had in the 10 years we've been coming so far.

We always loved holidays in France when our children were young and when the opportunity arose we decided to buy a home of our own. As to why we chose Les Étangs out of all the French properties available... just sit in the garden and you will understand (especially when surrounded by sunflowers)! The sense of peace and silence when we first viewed it was captivating and that hasn't changed. We liked the idea of having a modern, comfortable home within an old traditional building so that's what we have tried to achieve. Even after 13 years we are still discovering new places, although some of our guests are just happy to relax around the pool and recharge their batteries.

Nearest Airport : Bergerac at 50 Kilometres Nearest Barpub : Bar de L'Union in St Séverin at 2 Kilometres Nearest Ferry : St Malo at 350 Kilometres Nearest Golf : Manoir de Longeveau (9 hole course) at 3 Kilometres Nearest Train : Angoulême at 45 Kilometres Nearest Restaurant : Le Vin Doux, Petit Bersac at 1.5 Kilometres Nearest Beach : River beach at Aubeterre-sur-Dronne at 5 Kilometres Car: necessary


The Atlantic coast (e.g. Royan or La Rochelle in Charente Maritime) is about 2 hours drive away, achievable as a day trip but also nice for an overnight stay.

River beaches with good facilities for families can be found 6km away in Aubeterre, about 15km away in St. Aulaye and at Grand Etang de la Jemaye about 30 minutes drive away.


A car is essential in this rural location. The nearest airport is Bergerac, about 50km away and an easy 1h 15mins drive. Nearest channel port is St. Malo, about 350km; nearest railway station is Angoulême-45km. Les Étangs is also easily accessible from airports at Bordeaux, Poitiers, Limoges and La Rochelle if fly/drive packages are chosen.


St Séverin village - 2km

Aubeterre-sur-Dronne (listed as "one of the prettiest villages in France")-5km

Ribérac - 12km (large town with good facilities including a LECLERC hypermarket and an excellent Friday morning market).

Angoulême and Périgueux, largest towns in the area, are each about 45km away.

Each has lovely old town quarters plus big hypermarkets on the outskirts.

Chalais - 15km (Monday morning market and an excellent restaurant at the Chateau).

OUR LOCAL VILLAGE, St-Séverin (2Km, easily walkable) has everything you need on hand for a relaxing holiday if you don't feel like venturing far. The revamped SPAR supermarket includes a good butchery department and is open daily. We have an excellent bakery; small independent grocer; newsagent/tobacconist; post office; bank/ATM; doctor/dentist/pharmacy; hairdressers and so on, plus 3 cafes, a traditional French bar (English owned) and a hotel which is open for coffee and meals too. FREE WIFI is available in the hotel and at least one cafe.

The property has the benefit of privacy and beautiful views but is also conveniently situated close to a village with plenty to offer. We think the house is furnished and equipped to a very good standard because it is primarily our second home, and we want others to enjoy it too.
