Gites in Riverside Chateau with Shared Pool and River Beach In 6 Acre Grounds - Les Tilleuls, Sleeps 5

Updated: 04-Dec-2016
Gites at Chateau du Fraissinet, Branoux les Taillades, Nr. Ales, Gard, Languedoc-Roussillon, France - Peaceful Central Location Ideal For Exploring The Sites Of This Beautiful Region

Château du Fraissinet is a pretty country house tucked into a valley on the edge of the wild, mountainous Cevennes National Park. The spacious six acre grounds are great for kids to explore and the river is shallow enough to paddle and fish with nets with a deeper spot for swimming and inflatable boats further along. Relax in the sunshine beside the pool; it's securely fenced with a 11m x 5m main pool for more confident swimmers; a basin with spa streams to sit and cool off; and a paddling area for younger children, including a little 'stream' which they love. Both adults and children will enjoy getting to know our friendly donkeys or playing table tennis in the shade of the hundred-year-old plane trees.

If you fancy a day out then a short drive north takes you to the most natural and unspoilt National Park in Europe. Venture south and you arrive at the Mediterranean beaches, the walled town of Aigues Mortes and old fishing port of the Grau du Roi. You can also visit the Roman town of Nimes, as well as Arles, Avignon and Montpellier. Closer to home there are adventure parks, a steam train, a bambouserie and great kayaking adventures to be had on the Ardeche, Tarn and Ceze rivers. There is also the spectacular Pont du Gard and the Haribo museum, both near the beautiful town of Uzes. There’s plenty to keep the family busy for a whole two weeks.

About the Owner

Chris and Alison Burns bought the beautiful, but neglected Chateau du Fraissinet in 2002 and moved in straight away with their four children. It was a real adventure and the first couple of years were spent working non-stop on the house and grounds which were in a very dilapidated state. Fortunately Chris had been in the building industry since leaving school and has been able to do all the renovation work himself - including the pool which he designed and built from scratch. Having complete control over the work means that everything has been finished to a high standard.

The Château du Fraissinet is not only a fabulous holiday destination but also our home and a very special place. It is a real pleasure to share it with our guests and see how much everyone enjoys their holidays here, going away relaxed and invigorated at the end of their stay.

The winter months are quieter and Alison has found the time to write two novels. Both are available on Amazon and make great holiday reading;

Chasing Sunflowers and Tom's Daughters

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just spent a wonderful fortnight at the Chateau du Fraissinet. The location was perfect - plenty to do in the region as well as terrific pools to relax in near the gite.

Days out that we really enjoyed were the Pont du Gard and visiting the beach at la Grande Motte. The Grottes de Desmoiselles were also breathtaking. We also had some great evenings over at the Guingette as well as really excellent food at the Auberge du Fraissinet.

Many thanks to Chris & Alison for making our stay so memorable.

Lovely relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing holiday at the Chateau. The gite we were in (Tilleuls) was ideal for us and the layout worked well, as the bedrooms stayed cool even though it was more then 30 degrees C each day). Our boys - aged 7 and 4 -absolutely loved the pool as did we. The wifi was also a real bonus as meant if it got too hot, we could retreat inside and keep the kids amused. We got the Eurostar from Ashford to Avignon where we hired a car and drove to the Chateau, which was a great alternative to flying.

Beautiful setting and good location

  • 4 of 5

The setting of Le Fraissinet is beautiful, surrounded by hills and a river. The weather at the end of August was perfect, hot but dry and never oppressive. Best of all, we didn't notice any mosquitoes.

For a keen cyclist, the surrounding hills are a highlight, with miles of very quiet, well surfaced and often shady D roads. Views from the hill tops and ridges are glorious

The pool was well maintained and the separated shallow areas worked well. The 'Les Tilleuls ' apartment living area is light and airy with large windows on two sides. The bathroom was newly done with plenty of hot water. Cooking facilities were fine for simple family meals and washing machines and driers were available in a separate block.

The bedrooms are downstairs and dark but cool at night.

The location worked for us, with Nimes, Avignon and canoeing (Tarn or Ardeche) all within about an hour and a half's driving distance.

The only downside was that none of our party could access WiFi for the duration of the stay, although Chris has subsequently written to confirm that the problem has now been fixed.

Beautiful, peaceful setting for a family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful quiet setting in a very pretty part of France. We were made very welcome by the owners and the accommodation was comfortable and characterful. It was easy to spend a whole day in the grounds/pool/river on site but there are plenty of places to visit and activities to try out within a reasonable distance too. Ideal for families during the school holidays. The shared pool meant that all the kids could play together.

As you can probably tell from the above, I'd recommend it!

Dissapointing, overrated

  • 2 of 5

The "chateau" looks a lot prettier in the pictures than it really is. Chris and Alison are still building, which means there are piles of bricks/tiles/stones all over the place. We had the impression they they could hardly cope with their project. Chris builds everything himself, whhich you can see clearly. It has a highly improvised look and feel. The pool was by times overcrowded, greenish and dirty. There were ugly garden hoses lying around. Not terrible, just uncharming. Kitchen was poorly equipped. Five plates and glasses in a 5p apartment is not enough. Wifi only worked outside... Only two apartments have a view on the garden. The others are built on the dark side of the house, on a mountsin slooe. No view at all!!

Nearby towns were sleepy and very poor. No restaurants or markets.

All in all a big dissapointment.

Owner's Response: To begin with we take all of the pictures with a standard Lumix 35 camera and have built the website ourselves. On arrival many people have said the Château is even lovelier than they imagined from the pictures. There is a pile of river stones beside the pool ready for a rock garden in the autumn, but that is all. We will assume the remark that ‘you can see Chris does all the work himself’ is a compliment. He is a qualified City & Guilds tradesman with over 20 years’ experience in the UK construction industry. He does considerable research before beginning any work on his beloved house. Chris and I have been running and developing the Château du Fraissinet as a successful holiday business since 2004 so it’s not clear what is meant here by the word ‘improvised’. The pool was briefly discoloured by a PH imbalance caused by a heavy shower but this was quickly remedied and it returned rapidly to blue. There is 200sqm of space around the pool with both sunny and shady areas to relax in. There is also a pretty river that borders the property. The garden hose left in the courtyard is used every day to water over one hundred pots of petunias, geraniums, marigolds and daisies that add vibrant colour that most of our guests love. The well-equipped kitchen is accurately described on the website. There is ample cutlery and utensils, saucepans, a cafetière, salad bowls, mugs, cups and a set of six dinner plates, six side plates and six bowls…. ? Free Wifi is available at the Château but sometimes the metre-thick walls can impede the signal. There are, however, lots of hotspots. The website shows which apartments have views on the garden. Others look out onto the hill with the donkey field and the ancient sweet chestnut trees. Most of our guests enjoy a meal at the local Auberge du Fraissinet and we could have offered advice on other good local eateries had we only been asked. There are excellent local markets in Alès and la Grand’Combe...? Please see all reviews of our gites to see how other guests have enjoyed their holiday with us.

Fantastic hosts and great pool for small children

  • 5 of 5

We arrived early evening following a long drive and were immediately welcomed by Chris and Alison. The accommodation was exactly as described and the extras we had asked for (Cot & High chair) were waiting for us.

The facilities on site were exactly what we were looking for. The pool was perfect for our needs with the 3 feeder pools and channel ideal for our 9 month daughter to be able to splash away until she tired herself out.

We spent 9 days longer than originally planned as we had a car failure which took a week to resolve. Without Chris and Alison's help what was already a difficult situation would have been many times worse. We are and will remain grateful for the help.

Our daughter Amy was a huge fan of the dogs Lyra and Alfie and the donkeys Daisy and Coco.

If you are looking for a base in the South of France to relax in the good weather with great hosts than I can not recommend Chateau du Fraissinet highly enough. We are already looking into when we are able to visit again.

Stunning views! Perfect for kids.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at the chateau with our 3 year old son. We all had an excellent holiday and Chris and Alison were extremely friendly and helpful. The reason why I chose this place over other gites was because of the stunning pool which included 3 smaller splash pools which was ideal for young children. They also have 2 donkeys, dogs and geese which my son loved. We fed the donkeys carrots everyday!

Chris and Alison arranged a bbq for us and the other couple staying there. Great fun indeed.

The gite we stayed in was spread over 3 floors and very comfortable and had everything we needed. The grounds were stunning and well looked after by both. There are loads of activites to do nearby, kayaking, canoeing, adventure park, waterpark, steam train, caves etc....

Hopefully we will visit again next year.

From the Owner

Nestling in a valley beside a river, sheltered by a hill full of pine and sweet chestnut trees this property had enormous potential from the outset. It was big enough to accommodate our family and to offer spacious holiday accommodation for others. With its river frontage, beautiful grounds with shady plane trees and ancient sweet chestnuts, the Chateau du Fraissinet was crying out for some TLC. Chris, in particular, had a vision of how the the old house and grounds could be once restored to their former glory and now that vision has become a reality.

Our local town is only 5km away. Here you will find all the commerce that you would expect including two supermarkets, banks, boulangeries and a pharmacy. It also hosts a fantastic market selling local produce on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

For a meal out our local Auberge du Fraissinet is just a 300km stroll along the riverbank and there also is a bar at the top of the lane. The small campsite opposite has a snack bar too and it is possible in high season to order fresh baguettes and pain-au-chocolat for the following morning. A short drive away there are several good quality restaurants where you can experience local cuisine cooked to a very good standard.

Drive 2km up the valley you will find the stunning lac de Camboux. In high season it is possible to hire a kayak or pedalo to explore. There is also a snack bar and a lake beach at one end. The lake is quite well stocked with a variety of fish including large Carp above 50lb. Rods, tackle and tuition can be hired. Please ask us for more details.

For walkers we are in Stephenson country and there are numerous trails to follow, some short and some never ending. We have local maps and guide books and can offer advice on some truly fantastic scenic walks.

Horse riding for the novice and experienced alike can also be found at our local riding school.

A good choice of kayaking (Ceze, Ardeche, Gardon and Tarn) is available in under an hours drive. Several forest parks (similar to Go Ape) are also less than an hour away. Perfect for energetic kids and teenagers.

A day trip to the Mediterranean is just 1hr 30mins by car. Favourite spots include le Grau du Roi, Aigues Mortes and the fantastic beach at L'Espiguette. Look out for the flamingos, bulls and white Carmargue horses too.

From the Owner

Our dream was to create a little holiday centre that would be a venue in its own right, not just a base for visiting this beautiful region, and the Chateau du Fraissinet has become exactly this. Our comfortable accommodation welcomes families every spring, summer and autumn and all enjoy the child-friendly pool, the space, the river and the donkeys. But for those who want to venture further afield there is lots to do - the stunning Lakes of Camboux are just a few kilometres up the road, the UNESCO protected Cevennes National Park is on our doorstep; there are Roman towns, forest parks, rivers for swimming and kayaking and and the Mediterranean coast only 90 minutes away. Amidst all this, the Chateau du Fraissinet offers a haven of peace and tranquility that you need never leave unless you want to.
