Elegant nineteenth century house situated on the outskirts of the beautiful village of Crazannes famed for its superb stone. Within walking distance of the picturesque river Charente, the historic Château de Crazannes (Perrault's original Puss in Boots castle) and the village centre with local butcher. There are daily bread deliveries to the house. Garden to the front and back of the house, sun terrace, barbecue and sheltered ping-pong table. Lovingly restored garden room and kitchen with rural views.

About the Owner

I am a musician and teacher and my wife is a freelance consultant. We have had the house for 9 years. We have three children and have had great pleasure from using the house for holidays both with friends and on our own. We have also enjoyed making improvements to the property over the years. In the summer we run an opera festival locally and we enjoy creating a welcoming atmosphere for the singers and musicians that we accommodate and cater for. Our children spend hours in the garden playing ping-pong and climbing trees and we all completely relax - something much needed with our hectic lives!

The children have spent the whole two weeks outside playing giving us lots of time to switch off. Everything was very comfortable and we loved the beautiful renovation of the kitchen.



Lovely views over the trees. We did lots of walking and enjoyed our visit to Cognac making full use of the tours and tastings!

We bought our house because we wanted to have a home reasonably near the sea where the weather was reliable (the Charente Maritime is the second sunniest region of France) but that we could get to by car from the UK without an overnight stop. We all love the river swimming and the charming little river beach in the next village. I love surfing on the Ile d'Oleron and the fantastic beaches as well as the abundance of good local seafood (mussels and oysters) and other local produce such as the cognac, pineau de Charente and the melons. The River Charente itself is beautiful as is the gently rolling countryside which has always reminded me of Norfolk, my favourite English county.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

Nearest beaches are 30 minutes by car, (Fouras, Rochefort, St Palais sur Mer) Vast sandy beaches on Ile d'Oleron 45 minutes by car.

Travel:

La Rochelle airport 45 minutes away - car hire essential. Bordeaux airport 1 hr 40 minutes, car hire essential. Normandy ports (Caen, Le Havre) are 5 hours by car, Calais is 7 hours including stops.

Distances:

Crazannes centre is 2 minutes walk. St Savinien & Port d'Envaux are 5 minutes by car/10 minutes by bicycle, Saintes is 15 minutes by car, La Rochelle 45 minutes by car and Bordeaux 1 hr 40 minutes by car. Cognac is 45 minutes by car.

There is a butcher in Crazannes, and excellent boulangeries in Port d'Envaux and St Savinien. Supermarkets are found in St Savinien, St Porchaire and a large HyperU in Saintes. The nearest pharmacy is in St Savinien. There are good restaurants in Port d'Envaux - Le Gabarier, St Porchaire - Le Bruant, and several in Saintes - our favourites are the Relais Bois St Georges and L'Heloise in Pont L'Abbaye. The nearest banks are in St Savinien. There are traditional markets on Saturdays in St Savinien and on Wednesdays and Saturdays in Saintes with a fantastic selection of local produce and a covered market with excellent butchers. One of the biggest markets in France takes place in the centre of Saintes on the first Monday of every month. There are a number of brocante/antique shops, one of the best is in St Porchaire. There is an excellent river beach in the nearby village of Port d'Envaux with swimming, boat/canoe hire and children's play area. There is an outdoor pool complex with tennis courts 5 minutes away in St Savinien near the holiday centre. There are three interesting châteaux nearby which are worth a visit - Château de Crazannes, Château de Panloy (Port d'Envaux) and Château de la Roche Courbon (near St Porchaire). The town of Saintes has lovely boutique shopping and many places of interest to visit including the Roman Arena. The excellent shopping city of La Rochelle has a renowned Aquarium and a large selection of family friendly restaurants in the historic Vieux Port. One of the best zoos in France is to be found at La Palmyre on the coast. Seafood enthusiasts can buy fresh mussels and oysters in season on or near the Ile d'Oleron and along the coast. You can hire bicycles to tour the enchanting Ile d'Aix, accessible by small ferry from the town of Fouras.

£200 per week booked is required as confirmation of booking. The remainder payable 2 weeks in advance of the start of the holiday. There is an additional refundable damage deposit of £150. There is an optional end of stay cleaning charge payable on arrival. Please do not smoke inside the property.

Changeover Day:
Changeover day is Saturday, though Friday may be negotiable. Arrival time - after 4pm, Departure time - 10am.

We have had some wonderful family holidays both in the summer but also throughout the year during the Easter and Christmas holidays. The house is in excellent condition and has plenty of character. It is perfectly situated for the beach, river, local towns, shopping, historic places of interest and unique attractions such as the La Rochelle Aquarium and the zoo at La Palmyre - the very best of their kind anywhere in France.
