We're in London's historic Gibson Square, which is an oasis of calm just off of Islington's lively Upper Street, where you'll find literally dozens of upscale bars, restaurants and shops. Our neighbourhood is friendly, safe and immaculate, making the flat a perfect fit for a woman traveling alone, for a professional here on assignment working late hours -- for anyone, in fact, who appreciates a civilized lifestyle. We're convenient to public transport running quickly to all the sights and tourist attractions you'll want to visit in this great city. The flat is on the first floor of a Regency terraced town house (2nd floor American). Travel back in time with us -- all sides of the Square, and the park inside it, look just as they did when George III was busy losing the Colonies. This quiet, elegant, comfortable holiday rental flat features very high ceilings, cornice mouldings, and a brand new first-class renovation. The fully-equipped kitchen is a dream!

Perfect WiFi, and Sky Satellite TV including the extra-cost Sports and Movies options. Pay-per-view sports and feature films are available as well. Sleeps just 2.

Those Wonderful Double-Decker Buses: Several key buses stop just three minutes from the house, giving convenient scenic access to all the museums, tourist sights, markets and historic neighbourhoods you'll want to see on your vacation, cheaper and often quicker than the Tube. Unlike in most cities, here the bus is your friend, with its dedicated express lanes and incredibly low cost -- just £1.50 (or less) with the Oyster Card you'll get the day you arrive! (And NOW, if you have a Chip&Pin-enabled credit card, you can use that as your Oyster Card!) Take the splendid double-decker #4 red bus to Sadlers Wells, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Fleet Street, Oxford Street shopping, Covent Garden and the West End theatres, and finally to Waterloo Bridge across the River Thames to the South Bank (National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, British Film Institute, Hayward Gallery, the London Eye), Imax, Waterloo Station, and the Old Vic. (All that in barely half an hour’s ride!) Several other buses from this neighbourhood have similarly-stunning itineraries

The Tube, and the Rail System: It's just a 7-minute walk to the Angel Islington tube station (Northern Line, Zone 1) for quick connections throughout London – just 1 stop to the King's Cross / St Pancras transport hub for further tube connections, the Eurostar to Paris, and mainline trains to Scotland, the North of England, and Gatwick and Luton Airports. And yes, King's Cross does have a brick wall bearing the sign 'Platform 9 3/4'. It's a 10-minute walk to the Highbury & Islington tube station (Victoria Line) connecting to the Stansted (Airport) Express, and looping through Central London to Victoria Station with connections to all lines. Arsenal's Emirates football stadium is at Highbury, as are National Rail's overground North London and Northern City Lines. Canary Wharf, the Financial District and the 2012 Olympics site.

We prefer to book full-weeks only, beginning and ending on Saturdays, and that is how the HomeAway reservation system will handle your enquiries. HOWEVER, please note that we frequently make exceptions, and so PLEASE ENQUIRE if your needs don't conform to that kind of schedule, even if HomeAway won't take the booking on the automated system !!

Our regular rate is just £1,155 per week (£175 per night for shorter stays) -- with never a holiday mark-up -- a tiny fraction of the cost of an equivalent five-star hotel suite.

About the Owner

Now retired, my partner and I now live our life-long dream of having four sweet homes and living in whichever strikes our fancy at a given time. Since the stock market crash of 2008, to cover the bills, all the properties are rented on HomeAway whenever we're not in them. Managing the rentals has turned into quite a pleasant, though very time consuming, new profession for us, wherein we meet (or at least correspond with) the loveliest people from all over the planet. We've had over 300 guests in the past eight years, and not a single bad experience. Phew! And we have great local staff for each property, so each home is always up to our own high standards for comfort, cleanliness and beauty.

Before retiring in 2005, I spent more than 30 years working on Broadway and in London's West End -- first managing, then producing, big musicals (mostly) plus handfuls of plays and concerts. I was part of the original productions of GODSPELL, DREAMGIRLS, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, and many dozens more, and producer of original Broadway productions of The Who's TOMMY and JEKYLL & HYDE, to name a few. Broadway concerts include Bette Midler, Michael Crawford, Frank Sinatra and even a very elderly Josephine Baker (a New Year's Eve concert, at the Palace, of course), whose chateau is just down the road from our house in France.

My partner Bill Rosenfield was for many years what Time Magazine wrote of him: 'RCA Victor's Man about Broadway'. He produced more than 60 Original Cast Recordings -- just pick one up at home if you have one -- if it's from the 1990's or early 2000's, his name is probably on it: CHICAGO, TOMMY, RAGTIME, CABARET, on and on. Billy's now retired from that and actively engaged in his one true passion: writing plays. This new career is just budding, but already showing great progress. He does most of his writing in a cute little shed at the bottom of the garden behind our London flat.

Love this Place!

This is my 2nd time staying at Gary's Studio Flat and I can't say enough nice things. The first time I visited was with my husband and the second with my mom; it worked well for both! Wonderful attention to detail, comfortable bed, the best bathtub, superb location and a very amenable host. Will stay here again, without hesitation.

Wonderful Georgian town home, lovely location, well-cared for and Gary is a superb host.

We were moved to the two-bedroom flat d/t a previous tenant in the studio wishing to extend. This was not a problem, but the review is more specific to the larger flat. Gary handled this issue without a hitch.

The flats do very much look and feel exactly as shown. This is historic housing with first-class interior design work, up to date appliances, and a gentrified neighborhood. Aside from a few "quirks" related to the era of construction (smaller stair treads than we currently expect, for example), the home is as modern as you can get in a building of its age. It ends up absolutely lovely, very comfortable, and an inspiration for those of us who plan to do some more work around the home some day. The flat is Gary's home, but they seem to be able to move out to other space when needed. This aspect might seem unusual, but if anything made our stay easier and more memorable. Islington itself is a delightful neighborhood without quite the cost and attitude of Kensington, etc., but more youthful and fun. It appears to be very safe. We did several long walks just in Islington and were delighted. If this area of London interests, you, Gary's flats should get "top of the list" consideration as your next destination.

Felt like at home

Gary was fantastic! We couldn't meet up as he was In LA but we had a great email contact. Gary was very helpful and always responsed fast. The flat is even better than how it looks on the pictures. At our last day we could have stayed longer as the departure was bit later then checking out. Everything was perfect even better then we imagined ☺️ Thank you again Gary. I will be back! Iwona .

A home away from home!

We recently had the pleasure of spending a week in this pleasant and comfortable first floor flat. The property is located in a nice, quiet neighbourhood with easy access to the tube and buses. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and shops in the area as well as grocery stores and the Chapel Farmers’ Market. There’s also a nice park across the street which one can enjoy. The great floor to ceiling windows provide beautiful light. The flat is spotless and very well equipped. We lacked for nothing. A good night’s sleep was had each night in the comfortable king size bed. There was plenty of hot water for bathing. It was a wonderful home away from home. Highly recommended. Our only regret is that we didn’t have an opportunity to meet the hosts who provided such wonderful accommodations.

Delightful London Square

Impressive in every way, unless you are older and prefer a shower. In that respect the bath/shower is tricky to use, hence only 4 stars. 4 1/2 would be given if allowed. Hosts, all other facilities and location are first class. Restaurants everywhere and good food shops abound. Quick transport to London via bus and tube. Very happy stay. On arrival door was opened by Gary as I reached for the (impressive) knocker! A nice touch! If you are accustomed to baths, rush here a.s.a.p. Oh, and note the delightful window shutters!

Owner's Response: Thank you, John, for this lovely and insightful review. I was startled by the complaint about the shower, but upon reflection and my further conversation with you, I am today adding a cautionary note to the ad, which by the way has always said "Not suitable for the elderly or infirm." It is true that -- because this is a free-standing clawfoot tub -- when you're showering as opposed to bathing, there is no wall to lean upon for extra stability if needed. Also, you are the second person (out of about 200 guests!) to mention that the side of the tub is a bit high for some older folks to navigate. At 70 myself, I find it very easy to sit on the side then swing my legs in, but I count myself fortunate, and agree that I should alert the less agile "Elders" among us to the possibility of a tricky proposition here. (That 24 inch / 60 cm high rim has also been divulged in the ad ever since that first comment came in.) I REALLY appreciate your frank and constructive comment, as it is never our intention to entice any guest into an uncomfortable situation! Perhaps next time round you'll consider our two-bedroom flat below this studio -- it's got a walk-in stall shower! HomeAway property 417134. :--)

Location

We love the Regency (late Georgian) architecture that is so prevalent in this part of town -- simple terraced houses from about 1810 with strict symmetry and Palladio's cube-and-a-half proportions which somehow create a great sense of calm, order and sophistication. Our house, on a perfectly-preserved square containing nothing but its original Regency terraced houses, features large windows and big open sky -- plus that pristine little park right across from us, with something in bloom every month of the year. And we greatly appreciate that very 'London' phenomenon, which is that all we hear is birdsong here, notwithstanding the fact that we're a 90-second walk to the very busy Upper Street, abounding with life and energy -- more restaurants, bars and real estate agencies than one can count!.

Ideally situated to explore London for a great city break, Islington itself is a hip, sophisticated destination on the northern edge of Central London, politically and aspirationally resembling Manhattan's upscale Upper West Side. The renowned Almeida Theatre and Kings Head Theatre Pub are just steps away, as are all the main supermarkets, plus endless boutiques and really fine food and antique shops. Stroll, bike or jog along Regents Canal. Easy transport links, fine restaurants, gay friendly. You can even walk (22 mins) to the Eurostar terminal and day trip to Paris in luxury for £59 return. Local celebrities include James McAvoy, Lily Allen, Dido and, formerly, Vladimir Lenin, Heath Ledger and Sir Walter Raleigh. Gibson Square alone boasts an Oscar-nominated film composer, a Booker Prize-winning author, a renowned stage director, a nationally known comic and a Member of Parliament. Former neighbour Tony Blair formed New Labour with Gordon Brown in one of our Upper Street restaurants

Other Activities: Theatre, theatre, theatre. (Or theater, theater, theater!) Museums, fashion, cuisine -- everything that London has to offer!

Golf: No golf here in central London, of course, but many of the nation's legendary courses are within an easy day-trip from the many train hubs easily accessible from our flat.

We normally rent from Saturday-to-Saturday only, but for extended stays we offer different arrival and/or departure days, if required. We have booked many such stays, which have left the calendar with several 3- and 4-day openings. In such a case, we're happy, of course, to fill in the voids with shorter bookings, at just £140 per night!

There are no other charges whatsoever unless you decide to rent premium Movies or Sporting Events on our Sky Satellite TV system. And, if it takes Maria longer than 2 hours to clean the place after your departure, overtime will be deducted from your deposit at the rate of £15 per hour (but please note that this has NEVER yet happened!).

Extra days, when available, are simply 1/7th of the base weekly rate.

This stunning room features glossy white tile walls, state of the art fixtures and great water pressure (which can be pretty hard to find in this town). The hot water is virtually limitless. The free-standing claw-foot tub features elegant chrome Euro-style bath fittings, but there's also an overhead rain head for a proper shower should you be so inclined. (A few older guests have commented that the height of the tub can make stepping into it a little clumsy; it's a standard 24" high -- 60 cm from the floor Me, I just sit on the edge and swing my legs in, but I understand that not everyone can do such things comfortably. Another guest has commented that because the tub is free-standing, he felt unstable with no hard wall to lean upon.) The view from the tub is stunning, enhanced by a large mirror which reflects the big bright sky out back. (And yes, there are shower curtains and blinds, so your complete privacy is assured.)

  • Wake up to a bright, bright sun as it rises over your park -- or shut it out with those in-built period shutters: 10 feet tall and carved from English oak centuries ago, they swing shut at the press of a finger. The little balconies which face the park are planted with lavender, sage and surfinas -- all in a warm deep blue. There are great reading lights at each side of the bed, plus down spots in the ceiling and of course that chandelier. Most lights are on dimmers so you can set the mood as precisely as a stage designer would , and enjoy the romance of living in this warm and inviting space. Notes:

  • There's a washer/dryer for your laundry -- a feature lacking in many London holiday lets. It's hidden in a kitchen cabinet, next to the half-height fridge-freezer. Enjoy a flat-screen 14:9 Sony TV with SKY subscription, including the extra Movies and Sports options. WiFi broadband, of course. Lots of gourmet cookbooks here, and plenty of novels and guidebooks to read. All downlights, and the chandelier, are dimmable to create a serene, elegant setting whenever you want it. The window boxes are automatically irrigated, so no worries there! Note: There is no landline telephone in the flat, but we are happy to lend you a UK-based mobile phone should you need one. Just top it back up at the end of your stay, paying for what you've used. No charges of any kind for the WiFi, of course!
