About the property

Barn in Puglianella, Camporgiano, Castelnuovo, Lucca - Peaceful Retreat, with total privacy and private pool!

Romantic, 2 bed, 2 bath restored barn, with beamed ceilings and traditional flooring throughout giving a feeling of yesteryear, but with all modern comforts and amenities. The grounds are extensive, private and peaceful, and the immediate garden is fenced for those with children. The garden is well kept, with lovely BBQ area and private pool. There are great uninterrupted views from the house, with the hills and mountains making a dramatic backdrop. Whilst set in a totally unspoilt area, there is a village 2km either side of the house each of which has a good restaurant. Other villages with fuller facilities are around a 10 minute drive away. The large village of Camporgiano is around 10 mins and has all facilities including a train station for stress free exploring and a small Monday morning market. The market town of Castelnuovo is a 20 mins or so drive from the house. Pisa airport is around a 90 minutes or so drive and Genoa is 2 hrs 15 mins.

About Lorraine

We are Fabrizio and Lorraine and fell in love with this fantastic unspoilt, green and mountainous area of Garfagnana many years ago due to the amazing views, the wonderful peace, and the real yesteryear, non touristy feel to the entire area. We achieved our dream of coming to live in this little piece of paradise with our two daughters, 10 years ago. We have been letting properties in the area for 12 years (our own properties , and for others via our agency Tuscan Retreats). We also assist friends running Houses in Tuscany with all their booking administration, so we advertise for ourselves, Tuscan Retreats and Houses in Tuscany, the latter of which has been running for 15 years. We get lots of fulfillment from seeing others fall in love with the area and return to us again and again!

Idyllic and relaxing home away from home in Tuscany

  • 5 of 5

My first impression of the cottage was "Wow". It's situated in an area that offers excellent views of the mountains of Tuscany. It's located on the outskirts of the village and well away from any passing traffic, so was very quiet. If you want complete relaxation, this would be the place for you. The cottage was presented by the owners immaculately clean. In terms of everyday living, all the necessary equipment was available to us, as well as many creature comforts. The kitchen was well stocked with the usual plates, cutlery and utensils, together with a washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave, cookers etc.

Fabio (the Owner) also took pride in the outside space. The gardens were well maintained and added to the feeling that we were being well catered for. The opportunities for outdoor living were also available. Plenty of tables, chairs, parasols and loungers meant that a place to relax/eat in the sun or the shade was available. The swimming pool was a blessing when the temperatures reached 30 degrees. The waters were wonderfully refreshing and warm.

Fabio was a great host. He was friendly, helpful, who also provided us privacy. He welcomed us with a small hamper of wine and foodstuffs and throughout the week would leave us some of his home grown foodstuffs from his nearby allotments.

There is a small town 10 mins away that has train station. The line it's on goes through to Lucca and Pisa. The cottage is therefor a great base to see some of the other attractions that Tuscany has to offer.

We rarely visit the same holiday cottage twice (preferring to visit different regions each year). We will make an exception with this cottage. It's certainly worth another visit.

Absolutely stunning location and property has everything we needed for a self catering stay. A real 'away from it all' holiday The owners Fabio, Elissa and their children Sophia and Matteo were wonderful hosts. Weather was SCORCHIO and topped 50 degrees C for five of the ten days we were there. WE INTEND TO RETURN FABIO so be warned!! :-) Thank you so much - we loved it and were amazed at the hard work you and your family do.

Away from it all...peace in the mountains!

  • 5 of 5

Stunning pool, very well equipped house, lovely and very helpful owners. Lots to do for all ages...canyoning, zipwiring, wonderful kiking, historical sites, villages, restaurants etc. The 25 min drive it takes to get anywhere is more than compensated for by the peace, seclusion, beauty and immersion into mountains, nature, agriculture and rural italian life at a slow pace...

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. Glad you enjoyed the property and all there is to do in the area! It is easy to think a mountain holiday is just about walking or lying around a pool! Fabio and Elisa would love to welcome you again. Just as a note for future guests, it is a drive for visiting places etc but there is a good restaurant with English speaking owners where you can dine al fresco less than a 5 minute drive away and the village of Camporgiano say a 10 min drive has a choice of 4 restaurants too. Al Melo is a beautiful lovingly restored property

  • 5 of 5

Al Melo is a lovely property and the photographs that you see ,genuinely do it justice. I picked this property almost as soon as I had seen it when searching for somewhere in Tuscany. It was the first I saw that really interested me and I was glad that I booked it. It has all the amenities that you would hope for throughout the property and the renovation which was done over 10 years ago was done properly with quality materials , bringing out the very best of this typically lovely Italian rustic property. It has a large area for sunbathing with a pool, and is secluded , private and quiet, nestled in the hills with beautiful views. There is a large BBQ area and the property is on 2 floors. You enter on the upper level, and you do downstairs to the bedrooms where it is much cooler. These properties have thick walls and are typically cool, ( no aircon fitted ). We visited in June , the temperature was up to 36C in the 2nd week, and the house remained cool. The property also has the option of wifi , and has sky TV if you want to catch up with a movie or sport or news. It would be ideal for a family as there is enough garden for children to play and of course the pool. There is plenty of covered parking, and shops restaurants are a 10 minute drive away. Fabio and Elisa tend to the gardens regularly to keep them neat and tidy and are excellent hosts ensuring that your stay is everything you wanted. They live a few minutes away in the local village and will visit to make sure you are ok. The local people are lovely , friendly and often gather at their local community center where we lucky enough to be invited to share an evening with them cheering on Italy in Euro 2016. Leaving to come home is the hardest bit, its magic charm pulls at you as you leave ! You wont be disappointed, it will be the centre piece of your adventure!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. We are glad you loved this well kept property and its great location . Thanks also for mentioning how cool the house remains - I know lots of people worry when they see houses in this area dont have aircon, but as you say, they really dont need it! Great to hear you enjoyed going up to the village too . Lots of guests who are lucky to be there when they are having their pizza nights, say they were the best evenings of their holidays! Fabio and Elisa, send their best wishes and would love to see you again. thanks. Lorraine at Tuscan-retreats.co.uk

Peaceful retreat with magnificent views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Al Melo. When we arrived there was a lovely welcome basket. Facilities are superb, plenty of kitchen equipment, Sky tv, wifi, plenty of books. The bedrooms are downstairs and are lovely and cool making for a restful night.

The garden is beautiful and the pool was at a refreshing 26/27 degrees. Lots of different places to sit, with tables to eat, an outside brick barbecue. Fantastic views all round.

Fabio and Elisa were lovely hosts, they were not intrusive, yet were on the other end of a phone if you needed them. They made us feel welcome, left gifts of potatoes and baby plums, that brings me onto the vegetable garden which we were able to help our selves to when ever we wanted - lots of herbs - a very novel 'basil bath'!

The views all around are magnificent, lots of wildlife, seeing deer, Eagles, woodpeckers, lots of friendly lizards.

Would recommend visiting the restaurant in Roggio, and spend time visiting the surrounding mountain villages and towns, which were beautiful.

Al Melo is an ideal place for peace and tranquility, taking in the views, enjoying the sun, and if you want to explore Tuscany you not too far from some beautiful cities, with the drives down the mountain roads being magnificent.

Thank you Fabio & Elisa for a lovely stay.
