Not a cottage we would choose to return.

  • 2 of 5

The location is perfect for the centre of Elie. It is warm and a good size. The little enclosed garden is very inviting and a great sun trap.

However the cottage is very very dated and not set up for a holiday rental. The cottage is used in conjunction with the owner's holiday home, and it shows! The kitchen cupboards are full of sauces, condiments, (many items out of date by years) and are full to the point when we arrived we had to condense all the full cupboards (as best we could) to make space for our shopping! And this is after a deep clean and disinfecting the cupboard we wanted to use.

There is WIFI and it is pretty robust, however the television in the lounge is a very small cathode TV (the big box TV's you bought 30 years ago)! There is a VHS recorder (not sure why?!) and a DVD player with 3 different remotes and you need a degree in how to watch the television let alone a DVD!

The cottage on first inspection is clean, however when you start to look a little closer the washing machine, dishwasher, fridge and cupboards were filthy. Unfortunately this dirt has accumulated over several years and requires a thorough deep clean. Lorraine the cleaning lady is very nice and surface cleans and changes linens / bedding and does a very good job. It is very clear Lorraine is not paid to deep clean!

The shower is powerful but also very old (a Mira shower from the 80's). It is a very small cubicle shower shoehorned into the downstairs bathroom which you certainly can not bend down in! Both reclining chairs in the lounge are broken (don't recline) and the long plastic sofa is very uncomfortable. The top double bedroom is in the eaves however would not recommend using this bed, you have to crawl onto the bed from the end to get into it.

The cottage is described as "modernised"???? Yes there is not an outside toilet but that is as far as I would go in agreeing with this very bold and deceiving statement! We have stayed in many holiday rentals all round the world, and this cottage falls way short in many many respects. Investment is needed in updating all the amenities, fixtures and fittings including all the basics such as fridges, furniture and beds!

Owner's Response: This is the very first complaint we have received since we began renting our family's cottage in 2001. We are sorry the client did not find the accommodation to her satisfaction. We will certainly address the perceived problem of cleanliness. We would however point out that this six week high season rental period was negotiated at half price.

A lovely cottage where you really felt at home.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time staying at this property. A lot of attention had went into making sure it felt like a home rather than a holiday apartment and it really made a difference. The back garden is especially enjoyable and therapeutic. It's right on the beach and I honestly can't find a bad thing to say about it.

Coast/Beach:

Elie is a long established seaside family resort with a small tidal harbour, an award winning beach, rock pools, and water sports. A bracing golf course. Attractive coastal walks.

A visit to the bird sanctuary on the Isle of May (by boat from Anstruther) - highly recommended, and should be booked in advance.

Elie is a good base for further exploration of Scotland's east coast, even if only for a taste of whiskey at Cambo, a round of Golf at St Andrews, or a view of Dundee's projected Victoria and Albert Museum extension (now started, just over the Tay Bridge), while a visit to Glamis Castle - a little way beyond Dundee is a real delight.

Going south to Edinburgh is just over an hour's drive, allowing that your children do not ask to stop at the Sea World, North Queensferry, or visit the new Forth Crossing View on the south side, from whence you might go west to see the Falkirk Wheel - in which case you will have to see Edinburgh Castle another day!.

Travel: A car is recommended, and you can park in the street.

Edinburgh Airport 50 miles
