About the Owner

We are Australians with very proud Italian roots! My side of the family hails from the Abruzzo region and my wife Flora’s heritage lies in the beautiful and ancient hill-towns of the Garfagnana, in northern Tuscany. Flora's father was born in Antisciana, a tiny village just 3 kms from Castelnuovo and her grandparents lived in the neighbouring lakeside village of Pontecosi, making their living from cattle trading. The story goes that Flora’s great grandmother was the prison warden at the Fortezza di Montalfonso, just above Castelnuovo town! You can still visit this historic 16th century fortress which is also a stunning venue for lots of local festivals and concerts.

Really good base for exploring the beautiful Garfagnana region. The apartment is on the top floor of a typical old italian building, 54 steps to be precise. You can justify ice cream and pizza after climbing them a few times.

Inside the appartment is light and airy, with a great view from the large hall Windows.

The main bedroom bed is very comfortable with a good quality mattress, crisp white sheets and pillowcases. Having a bad back this is always a concern, but had no problems at all.

The bathroom nice and modern, with a surprisingly good shower, washing machine in bathroom a great idea, you can travel light. Also a great pulley style washing line that you hang out the window to use, brought back memories of my nonna doing her washing.

The kitchen has all you will need and a dishwasher.

The sitting room and kitchen are all one and tv is a little far away from the couch, but to be honest it's to beautiful an area to be wasting time watching tv.

The agent Lesley went out of her way to make sure we had every thing we needed, even getting a list from us and getting some basic shopping in . Lovely complimentary bottle of wine, much appreciated.

The town is only a couple of minutes walk over a lovely bridge and the clearest river water, teaming with fish. In the town there are many little cafes to sit outside and soak up the atmosphere. It's a very Italian town, it didn't feel touristy it felt authentic. Market day is on a Thursday morning, a loud babble of italian voices fills the whole town.

There is the best gelataria I have come across, and we have tried many.

If you want a great base and a real Italian experience, then castelnuovo is the place to visit.

From the Owner

In the aftermath of World War II life in rural Italy was extremely tough. So, Flora’s grandfather made the brave decision to seek a new life and better prospects for his young family. They set out on the long journey to Australia in 1950, when Flora’s father was just 18 years old. They worked hard to build a great foundation for us and we are very proud of them all. A small piece of their hearts would always, of course, remain in Italy.

Further Details:

As eating out is probably one of the most important reasons for visiting Tuscany, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is a great choice! There are a number of excellent local restaurants to try, several within walking distance and plenty more within a few minutes’ drive. Our guests tend to choose the apartment as a place for a relaxing break and as a base for touring, but for those visitors who love to be active, there is plenty to do. Horse-riding, walking, cycling and fishing are among the activities available in the surrounding hills and lakes. There is also a swimming pool, with adjoining tennis courts in the town. In Piazza delle Erbe, just 2 minutes from the apartment, you’ll find an excellent Tourist Information Office, full of great information for visitors to the Garfagnana, plus free Wi-Fi.

As well as sight-seeing in the classic Tuscan tourist spots such as Lucca’s ancient walls, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo of Florence, this location also offers guests the chance to experience the natural beauty of the Garfagnana, as yet unspoilt by tourism, with its winding mountain roads leading up to ancient villages, high enough to disappear into the clouds. We are always happy to share our knowledge of the region and sometimes we’ll even let our guests in on our own favourite places to dine on the delicious local Tuscan wines and food!

From the Owner

As a child Flora spent many happy summers with her family in the Garfagnana and always felt very much at home. Our first holiday there together, with our own children, was in 2006 and I absolutely fell in love with the place! It didn’t take long for us to decide that we wanted our own little slice of Tuscany. The dream finally came true last year when we acquired our beautiful apartment! We hope our guests will enjoy staying there as much as we do.
