About Caroline Montague

We are an outgoing and friendly couple who really enjoy letting our lodge to different people. Our aim is to make our guests happy and ensure that they have a relaxing and memorable holiday.

Caroline Montague purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Caroline Montague chose Bantham

It is in an unbeatable location: Peaceful and quiet, near pretty thatched villages and 10 minutes drive from the picturesque market town of Kingsbridge. It overlooks Bantham and Bigbury sandy beaches, with a direct view of Burgh Island. Sometimes you can see what is reputed to be the world's only working sea tractor transporting people from Bigbury to the island. The art deco hotel on Burgh Island is often featured on travel programmes. Noel Coward and Agatha Christie have both stayed at the hotel, and one of Christie's Hercule Poirot movies was filmed there. The A38 and railway station are only 30 minutes drive away. Dartmoor is half an hour's drive. Beautiful Salcombe takes 20 minutes in the car and Dartmouth only 40 minutes. Plymouth city is 45 minutes away. What more can you ask for?

What makes this cabin unique

It is close to Kingsbridge, and has magnificent sea views, superb sandy beaches, fabulous walks and beautiful sunsets. Private, off road parking is available next to the Lodge. It is an easy walk to the local pub, The Sloop, which has excellent food. The Lodge is even organically varnished inside. It is totally safe from floods. Herons Lodge is very well insulated, so it is guaranteed to be cosy and warm all year round. The location has everything going for it. Come and see for yourselves!

What a fabulous find!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this well equipped haven. The cabin is situated in a great position for sea views (excepting the occasional bit of sea mist), within easy walking distance to the village of Bantham, the beach and cliff walks, The Sloop Inn is worth a mention for a refreshing stop!

Caroline is a very helpful host. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend this cabin if you are looking for a quiet space from which to enjoy seaside days, cliff walks and exploring the beautiful Devon countryside. A lovely retreat.

great view, peaceful

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from a week away. We had a great time, thank you. Hard to believe we were so close to the road/ track, we felt pretty remote. The only negative was the WiFi, or lack of. The 4g signal was great but unless you have an I phone, you, like us will use all your data. All in all we had a lovely time.

Absolutely lovely lodge!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely amazing weekend staying at the lodge. It Was the perfect distance to drive to start point and Salcombe one day but also Bantham is lovely with the coastal path so we also spent a day locally! Due to the lodge being quite remote we actually spent our evenings in after a couple of drinks at the local pub. It was perfectly comfortable and cosy - and we were quite surprised how well equipped the kitchen was to cook dinner! I would highly recommend anyone stay here for a lovely memorable weekend :)

Beautiful location for touring South Devon, but some niggles with the cabin

  • 3 of 5

We stayed for a week, and the cabin is clean and comfortable, with a lovely view to Burgh Island, (but see below). It is well-equipped, has an excellent hob (and oven). There are two wall radiators, which ensure that it is comfortable in the evenings.

However, as a previous reviewer has remarked, there are various niggles which detract from the overall experience: The fridge light, and the cooker hood light don't work. This may not sound like much, but the two kitchen downlighters illuminate, respectively, the sink and the wall radiator, and in the evening at this time of year, the hob and worksurface need a light, which would have been from the cooker hood. We reported this, and it may or may not be dealt with later in the year; we were told that they hoped we could manage without these.

The bedside light is broken.

The TV has extremely flaky reception. It has one of those little aerials that live behind it, and I suspect that a proper aerial would be much better.

The wall heater in the bathroom works for about 20 seconds, and then its thermostat turns it off, and it won't go back on again unless you turn it off at the switch, and leave it for about a minute, and then back on again. Repeat ad inf. Thes above might be less of a nuisance in summer, but they are noticeable at this time of year.

The other item is the general lack of storage space, or surfaces on which things can be set down. I can see that you decided against a wardrobe, (though I would certainly scrap the chair and put one in), but if no wardrobe, more hooks on the wall between the windows on the other side of the bed are needed. On the right-hand side of the bed is a dining table chair, which has no function other than acting as a bedside table. It could be replaced with a second set of drawers. In the bathroom, more hooks, say, over the towel ring. Ther is a standard little shelf ove rthe basin, but a couple more shelves on either side of the mirror would help.

The TV lives on top of the set of drawers (see owner's photos, No 6), using up more potential surface. Put it on the wall above the bed?

As a matter of accuracy, the deck furniture (photo 2) is not a teak table and 4 chairs, it's a much smaller iron table and 2 iron chairs.

Lastly, the view, the USP. It is fine from the decking. Inside, you only get the full view from the kitchen window - moving the table to the doors doesn't reveal the full view. Some foliage needs cut, back to the first vertical trunk on the left.
