About Mrs Jeanette Emmett

We have been at Monkstone for 20 years and we love it. It's great for walking and we take our little terrier dog Millie on to Dartmoor everyday with longer walks every weekend to coastal footpaths. Brentor is a lovely little village and nearby Tavistock town a great place to shop. It has everything we need and is a really friendly market town with a famous indoor Pannier Market and lots of individual shops many selling the local food products. We converted Monkstone Cottage from a barn to a cottage about 10 years ago and enjoyed making it comfortable and luxurious for holiday guests. The views are wonderful overlooking Dartmoor from all directions. We are nearby and always happy to help with your holiday.

Mrs Jeanette Emmett purchased this cottage in 1994

Why Mrs Jeanette Emmett chose West Devon

We bought this house and grounds because we wanted to be on Dartmoor with space and views but also to be near to a town for shopping. We love it because there is total peace and quiet yet it is convenient for the town.

What makes this cottage unique

No other place in the area has such stunning views.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"... Such a beautiful cottage, idyllic place ... perfect setting for a relaxed getaway ... we're torn between telling everyone we know or keeping our secret for as long as possible ... a hidden gem ... we came to explore Devon but spent our mornings listening to the silence ..."

"We have had a really relaxing holiday and enjoyed wandering around Tavistock and its fantastic pannier market, bought lots of presents. The views from Brentor Church are stunning so lovely just to be able to walk up there from the cottage, but we just relaxed and looked at the view most mornings!"

"It's nice to realise that England still has some wonderful places! Lovely cottage, lovely people, lovely views, lovely holiday. Thank you Jeanette and Roger for the delicious cream tea on arrival, homemade scones mmm... and thank you for looking after us so well, we will be back again next year."

Lovely cottage, great views, comfortable bed, constant hot water and our puppy dog made welcome.

  • 5 of 5

We were so pleased with our choice of Monkstone Cottage. We could walk our puppy Millie from the house - she went up Brentor three times! The views were lovely from the back of the cottage too, and the local pub served lovely food. The cottage was so well equipped, and the position was great - easy access to all the places we wanted to see. We packed a lot in - Devon County Show, Cotehele House and garden, Truro, Lydford Gorge (wonderful) on the doorstep, and then one day in North Cornwall. It was lovely to come home to the cottage which felt like a home from home, after a busy day. Weather was kind too!

A lovely place to stay on the edge of Dartmoor with a secluded, enclosed garden with stunning views.

  • 5 of 5

We only had a short stay, but enjoyed every moment. The accommodation was perfect for us and our Labrador with everything on the same level, the location is perfect. You can see the incredible Brentor Church from the front door and there are some beautiful walks directly from the cottage, and the stunning Lydford Gorge is only a couple of miles along the road. We also had Dinner at the Elephants Nest - food was excellent.

Perfect break in a perfect property and location.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Monkstone for 5 days with our 2 dogs. We were looking for a getaway for peace and quiet with tranquil surroundings and comfortable premises. Monkstone was this and more and is better than described.

Monkstone is clean, homely, roomy enough for all of us along with mod cons and a country feel overlooking the Moorland.

The views from the front and back were ideal. Greenery, wildlife, and bats in the evening made it that more special.

The location is tucked away but central enough for drives to the moors themselves, nearby towns with their makets and such friendly people.

The owner of Monkstone excelled in customer service, making sure we were okay and recommended places to go and we were welcomed with creamed tea.

We have recommended Monkstone to friends and will return soon as this was our 3rd visit.

Great time had by all

  • 5 of 5

Monkstone Cottage is a lovely, comfortable, airy, holiday cottage in which we spent a lovely week. Not only is the cottage lovely, but the location is fabulous, just below Brentor Church itself. It is within easy reach of most of Dartmoors beauty spots along roads that are lightly used. I cannot recommend this holiday cottage more highly - it is a great place for walking, relaxing and 'doing you own thing', Excellent!

My Perfect Holiday

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I stayed in Honeysuckle Cottage. When we arrived, we were greeted with a cream tea, logs for the cozy wood burner and the most pretty and well equipped cottage a couple could hope for. During our stay we met our hosts; Jeanette and Roger, who were so friendly and only too happy to give local directions, suggestions for walks and insight to the area we were visiting. We felt like we were visiting friends and felt right at home there. The town of Tavistock is delightful, especially on the Friday when the Market is hopping with activity and the Cafe's are swelling with friendly people and great food. We visited Lydford Gorge, which is absolutely amazing! If it wasn't for the review from our hosts, we may not have ventured there! We also visited other places suggested by Jeanette and Roger that made our holiday that more special. Not only was our cottage perfect and so well equipped, it was full of character and maintained at a high standard with all that a cozy romantic cottage for two could offer. We both stayed a week and found it difficult to leave such a lovely part of England with a 'home away from home' cottage and such lovely, friendly hosts. We left feeling revived, relaxed and our 'batteries recharged' - I highly recommend staying at this most delightful retreat from the busy world and a 'get back to nature' theme with old worldly charm and such lovely hosts. We plan to visit again for the list of things to do was not completed in the short space of time we stayed. Thank you to our hosts for providing such a wonderful retreat and friendly stay :-)

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for such a great review. We have tried to set the cottage up with everything we would want when staying away from home and a few extra touches of luxury. I am so glad you enjoyed Dartmoor and want to come back again. There are so many beautiful and interesting places to visit nearby to us. I really enjoy meeting new people and telling them our area. We will look forward to meeting you both again soon.

Beautiful and dog friendly. Love this place

  • 5 of 5

The barn conversion is very well designed with views in two directions over the countryside. There is a view of Brentor church and of the valley. The cottage is clean and well maintained and a lovely cream tea awaits you on arrival. The owners are very friendly and helpful but not obtrusive in any way. We take out three dogs who love running in the paddock with Millie, the owners dog. We would highly recommend this cottage to friends and family.

Owner's Response: Thank you Debbie and Pete for your review. It was lovely to see you all again. Millie really enjoys your visits. As you know from all your visits Dartmoor is perfect for dogs with lots of lovely walks for all abilities from a short stroll to a major hike and best of all the pubs are dog friendly. It's also so relaxing to come back to the cottage after a day out and sit by the fire or chill in the garden on the sun loungers. We always enjoy doing that when we go away and have tried to set the cottage up to be dog friendly with the enclosed garden. We will look forward to seeing you all again soon and wish you good luck with the house move.
