Dragon Cottage is an 18th Century Smugglers Cottage. It is situated in the picturesque conservation area of Deal and is within a stone's throw of the beach. It has a cosy sitting room with log fire and squishy sofa. The well equipped kitchen diner is roomy and has comfy chairs as well as the formal dining area. The courtyard garden is a sun trap and has a BBQ area as well as table and chairs. There is a steep staircase to the upper floor so this property is not suited to anyone with mobility difficulties. The bathroom is upstairs and there is one generous double bedroom and a twin bedroom. The cottage is situated in the conservation area of Deal which is full of history and supports a thriving artistic community. There is a wide range of shops nearby - both high street brands such as Marks and Spencer, Boots, WH Smith, Costa coffee and also local butchers, fishmongers, bakers and Organic Veg shops such as No Name shop for cheese and olives, Carried Away, Dunlin and Diver and Taylor Jones for gifts.

About Pippa Mackie

Pippa lives in Surrey - so counts as a 'Down For the Weekender' at the moment, but hopes to retire to Deal which is where her heart is....

Pippa Mackie purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Pippa Mackie chose Kent

Pippa bought Dragon Cottage in 2004 and, as a dog owner is happy for you to bring your well behaved dog to the cotage. All the family love Dragon and we hope you find it as relaxing and restorative as we all do.

What makes this cottage unique

The dog walks and the lively artistic community with exhibitions and live music going on are a fantastic escape from the hurly burly of work life. On arrival, the car is parked and everything is then in easy walking reach - wonderful. The shops are a great mix of known high street brands like Marks and Spencers and quirky local shops like Allotment, The Bake House, Peppers and Carried Away. There is a fantastic choice of places to eat and drink - all nearby and, of course, the sea is on our doorstep

A lovely cottage in a wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

Dragon Cottage is charming, immaculately presented and cosy. It's location is idyllic, being in the heart of the Deal conservation area, literally a few minutes from the beach in one direction and a short walk to the high street and all its facilities in the other. The family and I always look forward to a visit to Dragon Cottage.

a beautiful cottage. very well maintained and furnished. everything you need for a lovely stay.

  • 5 of 5

Dragon Cottage was a delightful place to stay. It is a lovely property in a superb location. The cottage is full of lovely furniture and very comfortable and well equipped. The property is very well maintained. A big plus was the courtyard with garden furniture ,a relaxing place to sit in the sun surrounded by flowering shrubs and roses. The owners very generously provide a welcome hamper which is full of goodies; jams, a variety of teabags and coffees, biscuits etc. In the bathroom there is a box to toiletries to use. Another special touch was various vases of fresh flowers left in the rooms.

The property is in a very quiet place although very central to Deal High Street. There is a great fish and chip shop literally 2 minutes walk away.

Everything provided was in superb condition. I loved being provided with a fluffy white towelling bath robe. Lots of DVDs and books are also available.

The only fault, which is not major, is the lack of a washing machine.

If the opportunity arose I would definitely go back for another stay and would not hesitate to recommend Dragon Cottage to anyone.

Owner's Response: What a lovely review, we are very pleased that the cottage worked out well for you and that you enjoyed your time in Deal and we look forward to welcoming you back..😄.we will think about the washing machine idea and see if we can fit one. The courtyard garden does look gorgeous at the moment and the fragrance of the jasmine was wafting in as we were setting things up for you..

Lovely cottage in a quiet and historic area

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was very clean and was big enough for four people. Very tastefully decorated and with all mod cons! Provided was a good welcome pack and toiletries; also information on the local area. It was very close to the town centre and all amenities. It was on a very quiet road that had much historical interest and was a street away from the seafront. There were lots of nice restaurants and pubs nearby, as well as a fish and chip shop. We had one of the best meals ever at one of the recommended restaurants. Deal is a nice town with lots of interesting shops and two supermarkets. There is a castle and museums. We visited other places locally such as Dover and the White Cliffs, Folkestone, Sandwich and Cambridge. Rail links are good from Deal. The owners responded quickly to emails and were very helpful. As a bonus the weather was really good. All in all a good holiday, thanks.

Comfortable and characterful cottage in great location

  • 5 of 5

This was my second visit to the cottage, but I came with different people this time, old school friends.

They loved the cottage and the garden, they thought the beds were amazingly comfortable! They also loved the way the cottage was furnished and decorated, and were delighted with the welcome basket and toiletries etc, describing it as like a boutique hotel.

We came on the train and found plenty of things to do reasonably close by. It was wonderful not to have planes overhead, as we all live quite near Heathrow Airport. I hope to come back in September. It's a lovely place.

Wonderful cottage, perfectly situated-comfortable!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed this wonderful cottage for a week. Everything is close and yet it's quiet and comfortable. We loved it. It has many extra things that make it special - the beautiful little private garden off the kitchen, a perfectly supplied kitchen with all the necessary tools and dishes, pots, etc., probably 500 books of any genre to keep every reader happy, plenty of tv channels to choose from and pubs and restaurants everywhere. Pippa's photography is a nice touch and all the little pictures throughout are fun to see.

The listing was accurate - the only annoying item is the construction across the street which blocks the parking for the cottage. We parked near the Angling Club for free but it's a hike to get to the car. However, we didn't use the car once we arrived so it was not that inconvenient. We took the train to Dover and could have easily done so to other towns as well. Walking is doable to Walmer Castle and Sandwich.

The workers across the street stop working around 4 pm on week days and don't work at all on weekends, so it was quiet when it needed to be. The property was very clean, well maintained and orderly when we arrived - the gift basket was full of nice things. Grocery shopping is a breeze with a Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencers plus many other little markets to choose. The Saturday market just a few feet away down on High Street was fun - we bought a chicken and bacon pie which was delicious and highly recommended. The Milaad Tandoori restaurant just down Middle Street is a jewel. We didn't need additional help or customer service but we have no doubt it would have been available and efficient.

All said, we will highly recommend Dragon Cottage to anyone coming to this area - it's a very nice place for a two to four people.

Owner's Response: We note your comments on the building works on the house opposite which, whilst we realise they are necessary, are a disappointment. Hopefully you were prepared to some extent as we mention the disruption before anyone arrives. We are relieved that they are not working at the weekend and hope they will finish soon😊 Other than that, we are very pleased that you found all you needed and had an enjoyable stay. We hope to see you again....

Cosy, comfy cottage full of charm and character

  • 5 of 5

What a prefect place! I spent an enchanted few days here at the end of Winter, snuggled up in front of the open fire in the elegant sitting room. Everything about the cottage has been provided with taste and thoughtfulness, from the well-stocked kitchen to the comfortable bedrooms and fluffy towels. The location is wonderful - a few steps from the beach, in a narrow street oozing history.

Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: We love the log fires too - the fireplace has a history as a previous owner worked in the film industry and the fireplace was used in the film 'The French Lieutenants Woman'. Hope to see you back some time.
