About the property

Luxury Smuggler's Cottage in easy reach of the beach and shops

Dragon Cottage is an 18th Century Smugglers Cottage. It is situated in the picturesque conservation area of Deal and is within a stone's throw of the beach. It has a cosy sitting room with log fire and squishy sofa. The well equipped kitchen diner is roomy and has comfy chairs as well as the formal dining area. The courtyard garden is a sun trap and has a BBQ area as well as table and chairs. There is a steep staircase to the upper floor so this property is not suited to anyone with mobility difficulties. The bathroom is upstairs and there is one generous double bedroom and a twin bedroom. The cottage is situated in the conservation area of Deal which is full of history and supports a thriving artistic community. There is a wide range of shops nearby - both high street brands such as Marks and Spencer, Boots, WH Smith, Costa coffee and also local butchers, fishmongers, bakers and Organic Veg shops such as No Name shop for cheese and olives, Carried Away, Dunlin and Diver and Taylor Jones for gifts.

About Pippa Mackie

Pippa lives in Surrey - so counts as a 'Down For the Weekender' at the moment, but hopes to retire to Deal which is where her heart is....

Pippa Mackie purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Pippa Mackie chose Kent

Pippa bought Dragon Cottage in 2004 and, as a dog owner is happy for you to bring your well behaved dog to the cotage. All the family love Dragon and we hope you find it as relaxing and restorative as we all do.

What makes this cottage unique

The dog walks and the lively artistic community with exhibitions and live music going on are a fantastic escape from the hurly burly of work life. On arrival, the car is parked and everything is then in easy walking reach - wonderful. The shops are a great mix of known high street brands like Marks and Spencers and quirky local shops like Allotment, The Bake House, Peppers and Carried Away. There is a fantastic choice of places to eat and drink - all nearby and, of course, the sea is on our doorstep

Great cottage

  • 5 of 5

Had a fantastic few days in Dragon Cottage. The stay was made all the more special for the little touches; the welcome hamper, the logs, the toiletries. We had lots of days out including to Canterbury and Dover Castle. Our favourite was hiring bikes from Mikes Bikes and cycling for lunch at the Zealand Arms. We will be back.

Owner's Response: We are so glad that you had a good break. The Zetland Arms is one of our favourite haunts - well worth the effort of getting there and a welcoming log fire back at the cottage afterwards is great :) We look forward to welcoming you back !

Cosy, comfy cottage full of charm and character

  • 5 of 5

What a prefect place! I spent an enchanted few days here at the end of Winter, snuggled up in front of the open fire in the elegant sitting room. Everything about the cottage has been provided with taste and thoughtfulness, from the well-stocked kitchen to the comfortable bedrooms and fluffy towels. The location is wonderful - a few steps from the beach, in a narrow street oozing history.

Highly recommended!

Just back from our second stay at Dragon Cottage and hope it won't be our last. The cottage is lovely, full of character and beautifully presented. You feel welcome and comfortable from the minute you open the front door. Wish we could have stayed longer it's a lovely place to spend some time. Thank you for sharing your gorgeous cottage.

Gorgeous cottage in Deal

  • 5 of 5

A beautifully presented cottage, clean, tidy, lovely decor and with fresh flowers and a hamper on arrival. Plenty of towels, bedding, pillows and dressing gowns. Lovely full log basket (complete with lavender) to light the living room fire, and all the kitchen equipment you could need if eating in. The courtyard garden with large table and chairs was quiet and private to sit out in. Great location 2 minutes walk to the beach and high street, and a short drive to Dover, and Sandwich Bay. Although no direct parking, we had no problem parking along the seafront and could bring the car up to load/unload. Helpful instructions from owners before our stay and contact details should we need anything, and information in the house about the area. A lovely few days away, and will be going back!

Charming and comfortable character cottage in seaside location

  • 5 of 5

I booked this cottage online, and was really pleased with the accommodation. It is situated right by the sea in the charming town of Deal. The cottage was comfortable, well equipped and warm and cosy, I really couldn't find fault with it all. A really nice place to stay.

Activity and Interests

Special interest holidays:

There is plenty of opportunity for sea fishing in the area, with the Pier within a short walk of the cottage where night fishing can be undertaken for a modest fee. This is an excellent area for cyclists with very accessible and level coastal routes to explore. There are many historical sites to visit - Deal, Walmer and Dover Castle, Canterbury Cathedral, the ruins at Reculver and the roman ruins at Richborough Castle just outside Sandwich. River trips from Sandwich quay to the ruins make for a delightful afternoon's adventure.

Coast/Beach:

The beach is within a two minute walk of the cottage and there are other delightful beaches at Sandwich Bay, Walmer, St Margaret's Bay and Kingsdown all within a 10 minute drive

Travel:

Dover is 15 minutes away. Canterbury is half an hour away. There is now a high speed train link from Deal to London and the airport at Manston serves the area.

Distances:

The shopping centre is a 4 minute walk from the cottage and contains all the shops, restaurants, pubs that will make your holiday easy and enjoyable. Deal, Walmer and Dover castle are all nearby.

Further Details:

There is a wide choice of dining available from 'fine dining' at 81, The Court Yard and Dunkerleys, to family provision at the Royal Hotel and the Three Compasses, with many tea and coffee shops nearby - our favourite is the Black Douglas which does superb Eggs Benedict and all types of coffee. Thre is a wide range of cuisine locally including, Thai, Indian, Chinese, French, and, of course, Fish and Chips! There are 13 pubs within 10 minutes walk - many of which have live music each week. The pier boasts an architectural award winning restaurant and the Band Stand at Walmer gives a traditional experience to those who like brass bands on a Sunday afternoon with an ice cream cone from the travelling Solleys Ice Cream vendor. The paddling pool, bouncy castle, traditional sweet shop and amusement arcade cater for the younger generation. The Astor Community Theatre has a fascinating range of performances including some real 'blast from the past' music as well as contemporary work. The promenade offers easy, level walking between Sandown castle ruins and Kingsdown. There is a bustling general market on Saturdays and a Farmer's Market on Wednesdays in the Under Croft by the Town Hall. On the dining table in the cottage there is an information pack with details of local attractions and amenities.
