About the property

One Bedroom Cottage with panoramic mountain views

This unique rural cottage holiday is located on a 2 acre Andalucia finca on the edge of the authentic Spanish village of Lubrin, Almeria in Andalucia. Lubrin pueblo is a typical Andalucian village tucked away some 2000ft in the Sierra de Los Filabres and just 45 minutes inland from Mojacar on the Costa del Almeria.. It’s charm lies in its narrow streets, its white village houses adorned with bright geraniums and bougainvillea, and its endless sunshine. Not forgetting the charming villagers of Lubrin that provide for all the basic holiday necessities and includes 2 Supermarkets, 2 Bakers, 2 Butchers, Bank with ATM machine, Post Office, 3 Restaurants and numerous Tapas Bars where you can get a Menu del Dias for just €12 including wine.

The accommodation is ideally located to provide peace and tranquility yet within walking distance of the village. The finca occupies a hilltop and is surrounded by terraced lawns and Olive, Almond and Pomegranate trees. The self catering cottage is full of character, spacious and with modern amenities. There is a fully equipped kitchen and outside has the benefit of very private terraces to greet the morning sun with a cup of tea or coffee and toast the last rays with a glass of wine.

The mountain views are truly panoramic and on a clear day include the Mediterranean sea. There is a swimming pool to cool off on those very hot days or just pick a shady spot to read a book, sip a glass of wine or take in the views. If you feel a bit more energetic there is moderate self guided walking and cycling straight out of the main entrance into the surrounding foothills.

Where to go and what to do!

The Cabo de Gata National Park is one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich coastal strips in the western Mediterranean and is the first Natural land and sea park in Andalucia. The drive takes just over an hour and the route down the mountain, via Nijar, is very dramatic. The park offers walks on marked trails and tracks amongst native scrub and grasses, amidst the scent of wild lemon balm and the distinctive aromas of curry plant and herbs. You are able to follow inland trails and coastline.

The ancient Andalusian city of Almeria(1 hour away) lies sheltered at the base of a bay, proudly dominated by the amazing Alcazaba, a huge Moorish citadel with three walled enclosures dating from 995.

The Alhambra in Granada is a very popular place to visit by our guests. It takes just 2 hours to drive to Granada along the Almeria to Sevilla motorway with stunning view. There is a shuttle bus that takes you from the Alhambra direct to the Plaza de Nueva where it’s a short walk to the Cathedral and Royal Chapel.

Best time to go

June to September for "chill" by way of R&R and the swimming pool.

October and November for an Indian Summer.

November through May for winter sun or self guided walking or cycling.

February for the start of Spring and the almond blossom.

March to May for bird watching and wildflowers.

About John Vincent

In 1998 my wife and I visited Almeria to look for a more permanent home for retirement but away from the mass tourism. We stumbled on Lubrin and within the first hour, as we sat in Bar Molino with our wine and tapas variadas, we knew that we had found our Spanish pueblo. After lunch we walked through the narrow streets and observed the children playing “shop” with their cardboard counters and toys they no longer needed. Groups of neighbours were sitting outside the houses talking and fanning themselves to keep cool. It was evident that the family unit was strong and this fact is very important to the reproduction and maintenance of social order. We bought an old cortijo on a 1hectare finca within a 5 minute walk of the centre of Lubrin. For the next 6 years we rehabilitated the building and converted the terraces into a series of terraced gardens with Almond, Olive and Pomegranate trees set in lawns with borders of Oleander and Grapevines. The old well near the Rambla was dry but we obtained permission to sink a borehole which now irrigates the gardens and fills the plunge pool converted from the original water deposit.

Fantastic walking in the sun

  • 5 of 5

Excellent location, lovely accommodation. Fantastic warm welcome from John and Moira. I instantly felt welcome and relaxed. The walks are very clear described with a photo of each turning point in a convenient small pocket sized "photo album." Great views. I felt confident doing these walks on my own, it was the first time I had been on holiday abroad on my own. The village has several lively bars and an excellent fruit and veg market on a Wednesday morning. The national park on the coast is well whether a visit. Stunning coastal walks and numerous wonderful beached/coves. Quite often I was the only person on the beach! The coast is about an hours scenic drive away over 2 small mountain ranges.

A lovely restful peaceful place to stay, in a typical Spanish village.

Cycle tapas and sun in rural Spain

  • 5 of 5

Cycling in the area is a joy with so few cars on the road and hardly a pothole in sight!. The off road routes are a good mix of terrain and good fun with some

wonderful views. Definitely worth getting to the top of the hill for. Lubrin itself is a very picturesque village nestling in the hills, with quaint whitewashed houses and narrow streets. The local tapas bars are great with wine 1 euro a glass and Tapas 1 euro each, means you can try the lot.

If you want to go car free try and tie your flights in with the local bus which runs twice a day to Lubrin. However having a car does give you the advantage of being able to visit the Alhambra in Granada -need to book this in advance. We used one of the local bikes and hired another from a bike shop in Garrucha on the coast as the other bike was too large.

Holiday was great, we loved the cottage and its decor. The cycling was great, you need to be prepared for cold in the morning and hot by lunchtime when cycling. Walking in to Lubrin in the evening was fun with the amazingly starry night sky and as it was only a 5 minute walk very easy to pick up supplies when

needed. In the warmer months the cottage would be lovely for Barbeques in the evening as it has terrific views.

Late sun in southern Spain

  • 5 of 5

Lovely self-catering bungalow just outside of Lubrin village. Very rural location with pretty landscaping on the property with a swimming pool for residents.

Wonderful reception from Mary and John who made us very comfortable and provided with information on walks, visiting nearby villages and where to eat in Lubrin village. We had a very pleasant week enjoying the local eateries which offer good food and are remarkably inexpensive. Thoroughly recommended for a relaxing break, or if walking is your thing then there is plenty to explore. One word of caution though, if you have any mobility problems, then Lubrin is not for you, very hilly terrain!

Real Spanish Experience

  • 5 of 5

If you enjoy walking and want a real Spanish experience then this holiday is for you. John and Mair made us very welcome and couldnt have been more helpful without being intrusive. The property was very comfortable and had everything we needed for a relaxing base for our holiday. As we planned to be walking we didnt want to hire a car so John arranged for the local taxi to collect and return us to the airport. We enjoyed our breakfast outside taking in the view and relaxing in the garden after a days walking. John supplied us with five excellent walks covering the surrounding area, all different and very peaceful and finishing at one of the tapas bars each day in the village. The village of Lubrin, a short walk from the property, is a maze of narrow streets and whitewashed buildings with some stunning views. There are a couple of supermarkets, two bakers, butchers and pharmacy, banks and a surprising amount of tapas bars for a small village, all offering very good food at very good prices. The market is well worth a visit on Wednesday morning which is the only day to get your fresh fruit and veg. The thing that struck us the most about this holiday was how peaceful is was everywhere which made for a very relaxing holiday.
