About the property

Cottage in Dale, Nr. Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire - The Living Room Looks Across The Bay, And You Can Fall Asleep To The Sounds Of The Sea

Morgan's Cottage has been recently refurbished, with central heating and a new kitchen. It is a family cottage not a de luxe rental and is subject to the usual effects of the wind and the sea! We hope the new heating will keep the cottage warm and cosy in the winter months. It has 2 double bedrooms and 2 twins. The living room has a wood burning stove and windows that look across the Gann, the beach and the pontoon. The small patio is a sun-trap in the afternoon. There is space for 2-3 cars. For basic provisions the local shop is just around the corner. The Griffin Inn, which serves food, is a short walk along the sea-wall. The Yacht Club across the street has a decent restaurant. Around the corner, Dale Sailing hires out windsurfers, dinghies, canoes etc and gives lessons.

About Caroline Keeble

Morgan's Cottage has been in the same family since before the war, and we are now in the fifth generation of family coming to Dale. Three of the houses along ‘the Brig’ date from the eighteenth century, when Dale was considerably bigger than it is now, with a busy port. Before our grandfather bought the cottage from the Dale Castle Estate in 1939, it was a Post Office and shop run by Polly Morgan. It is named after her.

Caroline Keeble purchased this cottage in 1949

Why Caroline Keeble chose Wales

My mother and her brother and sisters were evacuated to Dale during the WWII where they had spent previous family holidays. When the cottage became available, because of its wonderful position, our grandfather bought it, and rebuilt it after the war to be the family holiday home.

What makes this cottage unique

The property is right on the sea and overlooks the bay which is perfect for sailing, swimming, canoeing and fishing; the coastal path runs right past it; it's in the heart of the tiny village, a pebble's throw from the Griffin Inn which is the social centre; and it's a short walk to West Dale where there is a sandy beach and good surfing. Milford Haven and Haverfordwest (for shopping) are both about a 20 minute drive away.

Most amazing vacation spot ever!

  • 5 of 5

Where do I even begin....staying at Morgan's Cottage was like living inside a storybook. The house itself was absolutely stunning. Well appointed and so clean. Caroline provided a wonderful and completely thorough book to assist us in learning how to operate the heat as well as the kitchen appliances and washer/dryer. After a bit of review, we were able to utilize the entire space with total ease. The house was so large and left so much extra room for us to relax and enjoy. I think the most amazing thing was the views from each room. Waking every morning and looking out over the water made it hard to want to leave the house and explore! Even with the few days of rain, we explored the each of Dale, collected amazing shells and rocks while my three boys enjoyed crabbing along the pier and the sweet little cafe where they were able to buy everything they needed to catch the big one! There is also the most amazing restaurant nearly right across the street from the house with the most delicious fish dinner we had on our entire trip though England, Wales and Scotland. After traveling all across the UK, THIS house and THIS special spot remains our favorite. Something my boys still talk about all of the time. Always asking when we can go back! Our only complaint was that we didn't book enough time there. Three short days just wasn't enough! We plan to return again and give ourselves much longer to enjoy the area and everything the Morgan's Cottage has to offer. Thank you so much Caroline for sharing your stunning home and gifting us these memories that we will have forever.

AMAZING SITUATION

  • 5 of 5

How amazing to wake up with the sea on your doorstep-literally. Plenty of walks both easy and more challenging. The Griffin across the road serves the best and freshest fish and neighbour Sean is both friendly and helpful.

A few minor things- no loo roll(we'd brought our own)

We repaired the loose toilet seat

RE-hung two pictures which fell off the wall and frightened us to death. A great holidayoverall

and would highly recommend Morgan's.

If you want to stay nearer the sea, you'll need a boat.

  • 5 of 5

Dale is a unique place, and Morgan's Cottage is a wonderfully-located, beautifully-decorated, and superbly-welcoming property at the heart of the village.

The only slightly negative review on here mentions the low attic beams and that one toilet/shower is outside. Well, we'd balance this by saying that the groundfloor bedroom was very convenient for the oldest member of our party, for whom stairs are a chore - being able to spend most of her holiday on one level was a huge benefit for her. The location of the shower also means you can ban anyone from going indoors until they've washed every grain of sand from themselves, and it is literally a step from the kitchen door rather than some distant lean-to. The inconvenience of the attic beams is outweighed by the fact that when you lay your head on your pillow you can watch the sea from where you lie - it is a room with a phenomenal view.

Outstanding views from a tastefully decorated not entirely comfortable Cottage.

  • 4 of 5

I would love to be the owner of this cottage. However as a visitor I found a conflicting array of opinions as I tried to write an honest review.

We were a party of six. The couple who had the main bedroom on the first floor loved it. The couple who had the twin bedroom on the ground floor found the outside toilet and shower chilly and most incovienient at night.

My husband and I shared the top floor. Due to the shape of the eaves we came home with a few bruises after banging our heads on the very low rafters many times. It was also inconvienient to visit the toilet at night as we had to go down two short flights of stairs.

We, however are in our sixties and so younger visitors would perhaps not be troubled by these issues.

The sitting room was comfortable and tastefully decorated. The ground floor kitchen superbly equipped and roomy.

The location and the views were beautiful. The pub( The Griffin) served the freshest of fish and was only a few yards away.

If I could guarantee the use of the first floor bedroom I would certainly visit again.

We had a relaxing and delightful weekend . This review is as honest as I could make it.

Owner's Response: Dear Geoffrey Thank you for your "honest" review! We do try to make it clear on the website what the bathroom situation is and know it is not perfect. The cottage, as you probably read has been in the family for more than 70 years and remains essentially a family holiday home and has some characteristics that aren't ideal. I hope nevertheless that you enjoyed your stay and you had some nice weather. Kind regards Caroline Keeble

Special interest holidays:

The cottage is on the coastal path of the Pembrokeshire National Trust and is ideal for walkers all year round.

Coast/Beach:

Morgan’s Cottage lies on the road going up to Dale Fort and is on the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. Dale has a pebble beach, though low tide reveals the sand. The pontoon is always full of children crabbing or jumping into the sea. Dale Sailing offers sailing and windsurfing lessons, and you can hire kayaks and paddle boards.

There are fantastic beaches within a short distance: West Dale (15 mins walk) Marloes Sands (voted one of the best beaches in the Britain - 10 mins drive and 10 mins walk) and Watwick (30 mins coastal path walk, or 10 mins drive and 5 mins walk) .

Travel:

Dale is about 25 mins drive from Haverfordwest and 20 minutes from Milford Haven, both of which have stations. It takes about 4.5 hours from London (M4, A48 and A40) and 3.5 hours from Birmingham (M5, M4, 48, A40).

Other attractions: Folly Farm, Oakwood Theme Park and Pembroke Castle are about an hour's drive; there's a bowling alley and the Torch theatre in Milford Haven; the Blue Lagoon at Abereiddy and nearby Porthgain are worth a visit.

Both Haverfordwest and Milford Haven have golf courses.

Distances:

Marloes is about 10 mins drive. Haverfordwest about 25 mins, and Milford Haven 20. Little Haven and Broad Haven take about 30 mins and the surfing beach at Newgale a little longer. Pembroke Castle and St David's are an hour away.

Further Details:

Dale has a small shop, a café and a restaurant. About 3 miles away, Marloes has a village shop. Both Haverfordwest and Milford Haven have supermarkets, other shopping and banks.
