The Old Hardware is a beautifully presented spacious Grade II listed property. It has been stylishly refurbished (works completed September 2012), resulting in a cool, contemporary holiday home for 2 - 4 people. This is a perfect place to stay in the heart of the working village of Docking, close to Burnham Market and within a 10 minute drive of the beautiful North Norfolk coast, with its miles of wide sandy beaches and big open skies. This uniquely designed house with a classic/modern twist is a super place for romantic getaways with a smart ground floor living/dining room combining historic features and contemporary design. Upstairs is a gorgeous master bedroom - a lovely high-ceiling room with many original features such as large sash windows and timber floor. A welcome bottle of wine is provided upon arrival.

Many many thanks for your extremely warm welcome last week and for the opportunity to stay in your delightful property. You have done an absolutely brilliant job in re-furbishing this old building and our week was made all the more delightful with the efforts you have made to with all the facilities and equipment. Everything was second to none.



The Old Hardware provided a much needed venue for a peaceful break and an opportunity to have some friends visit us, all of who said how brilliant the property was.



My wife is particularly keen on cooking and we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of equipment in the kitchen - we are old hands at staying in cottages and are often disappointed. Not so here!

Very well updated from shop to attractive and comfotable home

Docking is definitely in a good location to explore north Norfolk. So many places to visit - beaches, historic homes and gardens, towns with independent shops.

We found the house very comfortable and enjoyed our stay. Having such a large bedroom was very welcome. It was very good that the property had not been changed to accomodate more than two people - that made it special.

"pure luxury!"

This was a Birthday treat, and it certainly didn't disappoint! Starting when we opened the door into the tasteful and spacious lounge, finding our bottle of "Fizz" was a lovely surprise, and while it was chilling we explored the rest of the property. The only mistake we made was in not booking for a longer stay, but we will definitely be back, highly recommended!

Still Brilliant!

This was our second stay at The Old Hardware and it is a very stylish renovation with plenty of space for two people. We are committed self-caterers due to allergies and the kitchen is the best we have every experienced in a rental. While there are very good places to dine there is also some outstanding local produce readily available and the facilities here make it a pleasure to cook.

The bathroom and spacious bedroom are of a very high standard with good heating in the autumn/winter when we have stayed. The location may not be an obvious preference in that it is not a coastal village but it is excellent for reaching all the North Norfolk beaches/harbors and coastal paths and possibly better than being at one end of the main coast road. We are keen birders and nature lovers and this is a perfect location for accessing RSPB and other reserves.

We have stayed in other places locally but this is by far the best and we are back for a third visit in November.

Stylish

We spent four nights as this very well appointed holiday let which was excellent for two. It was warm, comfortable and spacious, tastefully furnished and decorated. It is well situated for visiting the coast and local attractions.The only drawback was the noisy main road outside which disturbed our early mornings. Secondary double glazing and heavier curtains might remedy this. Also the lack of outside space might limit it's attractions during the summer months. That said ,I would not hesitate to recommend this property to couples who love N.Norfolk.

Owner's Response: Hello Barbara and thank you for your kind comments. We intend to action your recommendation on the curtains. Currently the bedroom windows are fitted with roller blinds but we will add curtains for further cosiness. We have chosen not to fit secondary glazing in order to keep the interior uncluttered and stylish. We have not had any similar comments and would note that the Old Hardware is on the High Street (main street) of the village and the Docking is still a 'working' village with tractors etc. When you mention a 'noisy main road' I would add that this is in the context of a small, peaceful village in North Norfolk! You are correct that the property does not have its own external space as noted in the property description on the Owners Direct advert. However, our neighbouring property does have a beautiful courtyard garden. Refer to Apricot Cottage (ref no. E7522). Many of our guests with extended families or groups of friends find it convenient to let both properties at once as the interconnecting doors can be opened to create accommodation for 10 - 12 people. regards Nina and Stephen

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

The village is perfectly placed for the North Norfolk Coast and its long, fine sandy beaches. Brancaster and Thornham are closest but Holkham and Wells are also worth a look.

Travel:

We are 1 hour drive from Norwich airport and 2.5 hours from Stansted. Use of a car is essential.

Distances:

Burnham Market is 6 miles away, Kings Lynn 16 miles, Norwich 38 miles and Holt 24 miles.

Further Details:

All roads in North Norfolk seem to lead to Docking. It's a busy working village with an excellent small supermarket and post office, a fish and chip shop, blacksmith, village pub, a large village playing field, tennis court and bowling green. Docking also has its own coarse fishing lake that is available on a day ticket basis.

The Titchwell Bird Reserve, home to terns and waders is close by as is the delightful Georgian village of Burnham Market. Unlike many other English towns which are dominated by multiples, Burnham Market has a traditional post office, butcher, baker, hardware shop, fish shop and chemist for all the necessities of everyday life, but there are also over 30 highly original independent and specialist shops, selling a wide range of exciting deli products, vibrant and stylish accessories for home and garden, smart clothes shops, and books old and new. There are some great places to eat, such as the renowned Hoste Arms which is a 17th Century old coaching house and is open all day. There is an annual summer music festival with professional musicians entertaining residents and holiday makers in various venues such as the lovely church of Burnham Westgate at the western edge of the village. From the end of November the village is beautifully lit with Christmas lights and it makes the perfect place to visit for Christmas shopping.

Sandringham and the market towns of Fakenham and King's Lynn are also nearby.

  • Outside: There are no parking restrictions and it is usually possible to park outside The Old Hardware. There is an entrance at the front off the High Street but also direct access to the kitchen after muddy walks and to deliver the shopping. Towels and Linen: The holiday cottage is supplied with bed linen and towels. For longer stays the property can be cleaned and linen and towels changed if required for a small additional fee.
