Guestbook comments from the owner

"Just a brief note to say how much we enjoyed staying in your cottage last week. It was perfectly equipped for our needs and beautifully warm and cosy, just what we wanted in early February. Our two dogs also had a splendid time.

Many thanks for making us all feel so welcome." JW February 2015

"We really liked The Shippen and had a lovely time. We loved the books, the flower arrangements, the cake, the pictures and the meal! We saw a jay and a bullfinch in the garden and thought the flowers were so pretty. We'll come again" PM June 2013

"We are loving the cottage - it's so cosy and well equipped etc, really couldn't be happier! You have furnished the place beautifully and I love all the little touches; artwork, furniture, crockery etc." AH Nov 2013

Very Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was clean the owners very helpful and friendly. The cottage wraps itself around you, the most comfortable place we have stayed. The underfloor heating kept it cosy and there were lots of books and games. The kitchen was well equipped and even dog towels were supplied. We did not feel over looked by the owners. Highly recommend.

The Shippen, a very comfortable and cosy house

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful week holiday with beautiful dry weather.

We made beautiful walks along the coast.

The setting sun in Hartland Quay was a very special experience.

A wonderful retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had the privilege to stay in this wonderful cottage for two weeks. It was perfect for our young family and the owners were very friendly and helpful during our stay. We have three children of 5 and under and the eldest two very much enjoyed the freedom to feed the owner's rabbits and chicks. Everything was just as described and the cottage was conspicuously clean and well maintained. Internally the cottage is finished to a high standard, with a nice balance of personality without being overpowering. The location of the property was good for us, in that it was quiet and rural whilst being within a reasonable distance to local beaches and places of interest. We would certainly recommend this cottage to a anyone seeking a relaxing break.

Lovely welcoming cottage

  • 5 of 5

From start to finish we had a wonderful relaxing holiday staying at The Shippen. We were welcomed and shown around by the owner. The property was a beautiful, well furnished cottage stocked with everything we needed for an enjoyable stay for our family of 5. Our children enjoyed exploring the woods next to the cottage and spotting the numerous birds on the feeder. The beaches nearby are beautiful, all offering something slightly different and each worth an explore. We had a great day out at The Big Sheep, which offered so many different activities that each of our children came away happy. If you are looking for a peaceful, relaxing hideaway we would definitely recommend The Shippen.

A comfortable welcoming property

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in this comfortable cottage in May. The picture shown doesn't do justice to this pretty cottage and garden which has lovely views across the countryside and is also sheltered from the cold winds. The cottage was warm when we arrived, clean and welcoming, well stocked with books, maps and videos in case of wet weather. We appreciated the honey and eggs waiting for us. The sunroom was particularly attractive. The beds were comfortable and whenever we wanted something it was there! The instructions to find the cottage were clear. Hartland is a delightful, unspoilt corner of Devon with plenty of beautiful places nearby to visit and excellent walks.

Devon delight

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable and cosy cottage set in glorious countryside. There is ample parking and access to a wooded garden which delighted our Labradors. The owners live in the farmhouse just across the yard and were very friendly without being intrusive so there was always the feeling that advice on any matter was available if needed. We found the local area stunning with lots to see ranging from an amazing coastline to quaint villages, houses and gardens. Plenty of places to eat out and fantastic weather during our stay. Just perfect.

From the Owner

We came to live in North Devon via Surrey and Malaysia. We love the peace and quiet of West Staddon, the proximity to an incredibly beautiful coastline, the sea views from our house and garden, and being part of Hartland's interesting and diverse community.

Activity and Interests

Car: recommended

10 minute drive to nearest beach at Hartland Quay with beautiful dramatic scenery. There are many other beaches in the vicinity, both small, quiet, rocky beaches around the Hartland peninsula and larger sandy beaches at Northam (20 minutes) and Bude (20 minutes). Surfing is very popular on many of the local beaches. The coastal path is easily accessible with well marked routes.

Exeter airport is approximately 1.5 hours drive away and Bristol Airport is 2 hours. There is a train station at Barnstaple with a bus service to Hartland Village. Buses run from the top of the lane to Bude several times a day.

1.5 miles to Hartland. Approximately 14 miles to Bideford, 10 miles to Kilkhampton and 14 miles to Bude. Exeter and Plymouth are both 1.5 hours drive away.

Further Details:

There are several pubs serving food within a short drive of the property - in Hartland village, at Hartland Quay and in Welcombe or further afield in Bideford or Bude. Hartland village has several shops which can supply newspapers and groceries. There is also a Post Office in Hartland with a cash machine.

There are beautiful gardens to visit at Docton Mill, Hartland Abey, Clovelly Court and Rosemoor.

There are surf schools in Bude which is a very popular surfing destination.
