About Penny

We are a family of 5, with a dog called Santi, living on a small holding with ducks, geese and chickens.

Penny purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Penny chose Hartland

We came to live in North Devon via Surrey and Malaysia. We love the peace and quiet of West Staddon, the proximity to an incredibly beautiful coastline, the sea views from our house and garden, and being part of Hartland's interesting and diverse community.

What makes this cottage unique

A peaceful getaway, down a private lane. The cottage is spacious and offers lots of different spaces to relax in whether the weather is warm or cold.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Just a brief note to say how much we enjoyed staying in your cottage last week. It was perfectly equipped for our needs and beautifully warm and cosy, just what we wanted in early February. Our two dogs also had a splendid time.

Many thanks for making us all feel so welcome." JW February 2015

"We really liked The Shippen and had a lovely time. We loved the books, the flower arrangements, the cake, the pictures and the meal! We saw a jay and a bullfinch in the garden and thought the flowers were so pretty. We'll come again" PM June 2013

"We are loving the cottage - it's so cosy and well equipped etc, really couldn't be happier! You have furnished the place beautifully and I love all the little touches; artwork, furniture, crockery etc." AH Nov 2013

Warm and dog friendly

  • 4 of 5

Would like to award 5 stars but the deep muddy and water filled potholed access track prevents it. Definitely not a good first impression!

However access to the wood much appreciated by our dog and the cottage itself easy to live in, quiet and peaceful, very warm and welcoming after a day out.

The Shippen was a lovely cottage, very cosy and well furnished.

  • 5 of 5

The Shippen is situated down a quite lane, but only 15 minutes to Hartland. We went with friends and our dog. It was plenty bigger enough for us all. Very well equipped kitchen and sunny conservatory, we spent a lot of time in there. Nice and cosy living room with log burner going. It was nice to have two bathrooms. Plenty of hot water and under floor heating which kept the place toasty. Woods on your doorstep, take your wellies as it can be muddy. Will look lovely in spring. Enjoyed watching the birds feeding from the kitchen window. The owners were very helpful, but kept away. But we knew they were close at hand should we need them. We had a lovely lemon cake provided on arrival, very nice. The kitchen came with all mod cons, including a range which is on all the time, so it keeps the kitchen warm.

Highly recommended

  • 5 of 5

Lovely place, really enjoyed our stay. Good sized cottage (was just two of us plus the dog but would be comfortable for four); and nicely located (only about 20 mins in the car to Sandymouth Beach, about the same to various supermarkets etc). Owners are lovely, on hand to answer any questions (they live in adjacent cottage), but equally happy to leave you to do your own thing. Penny was especially gracious when our unruly mutt invaded the main house and had off with their dog's dinner. Apologies once again to Santi.

Excellent rural retreat ideal to recharge yourself for the next challenge of modern life.

  • 5 of 5

We all needed a rest but enough nearby activities to keep a couple of dogs and a 3 year old grandson engaged. This cottage was ideally located to cater for all and feel suitably refreshed after our stay. The owner was very helpful and accommodating, one of the dogs was a young puppy. Highly recommended and we look forward to another stay at The Shippen
