About Penny

We are a family of 5, with a dog called Santi, living on a small holding with ducks, geese and chickens.

Penny purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Penny chose Torridge

We came to live in North Devon via Surrey and Malaysia. We love the peace and quiet of West Staddon, the proximity to an incredibly beautiful coastline, the sea views from our house and garden, and being part of Hartland's interesting and diverse community.

What makes this cottage unique

A peaceful getaway, down a private lane. The cottage is spacious and offers lots of different spaces to relax in whether the weather is warm or cold.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Just a brief note to say how much we enjoyed staying in your cottage last week. It was perfectly equipped for our needs and beautifully warm and cosy, just what we wanted in early February. Our two dogs also had a splendid time.

Many thanks for making us all feel so welcome." JW February 2015

"We really liked The Shippen and had a lovely time. We loved the books, the flower arrangements, the cake, the pictures and the meal! We saw a jay and a bullfinch in the garden and thought the flowers were so pretty. We'll come again" PM June 2013

"We are loving the cottage - it's so cosy and well equipped etc, really couldn't be happier! You have furnished the place beautifully and I love all the little touches; artwork, furniture, crockery etc." AH Nov 2013

Excellent rural retreat ideal to recharge yourself for the next challenge of modern life.

  • 5 of 5

We all needed a rest but enough nearby activities to keep a couple of dogs and a 3 year old grandson engaged. This cottage was ideally located to cater for all and feel suitably refreshed after our stay. The owner was very helpful and accommodating, one of the dogs was a young puppy. Highly recommended and we look forward to another stay at The Shippen

Holidayed in March and the cottage was warm and cosy with underfloor heating and a log burner. Everything we needed was there. Home from home.

Tranquil haven in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed two nights at the beautiful Shippen Barn during stormy March. We were welcomed warmly by Penny who explained all we needed to know and then left us to ourselves until departure day. The house is very comfortable and we enjoyed evenings by the warm log burner.

Tranquil haven with welcoming hosts in a beautiful location.

  • 5 of 5

The Shippen is a beautifully converted barn with views of farmland and woods. We visited during stormy March weather and the house was a comfortable, cosy haven for warm evenings by the fire. Highly recommended for a battery recharge. Penny was very welcoming providing all the information we needed on arrival, as well as a cake for my friends birthday, but then left us alone until the day we left - perfect.

Well equipped and located with peace and privacy

  • 5 of 5

Fine walks along the nearby beautiful coastline. We were blessed with winter sunshine on several days. Lovely to return home to the warm kitchen at dusk each day, prepare a drink and a meal and later settle down by the fire. We ate out just the once - at Scrummies in Bude which was excellent - it was the bakery right across the road in Bude who said their food was always freshly cooked. The almond cake we bought at the bakery and took home was tops as was Penny's lemon drizzle cake.

We hope to be back at The Shippen soon.

Best cottage we have ever visited in 40 years

  • 5 of 5

The Shippen is cosy and homely, it was quite an effort to leave the house! Penny was welcoming and flexible, the setting is peaceful and very rural. We loved the range cooker, the selection of books were irresistible, the beds were extremely comfortable. The house feels very homely.
