The Old Olive Mill looked stunning on the website but still managed to far exceed our expectations. The village is charming and we were grateful to be in such peaceful and beautiful surroundings yet not remote from 'civilisation'. The Mill itself is very well equipped and comfortable and we made daily use of the pool and hot tub in the pretty courtyard garden. We were met by Deborah and her family who were delightful and helped us plan how to make the most of our stay in this breathtakingly beautiful country.

Amazing week at the Old Olive Mill, Maroulas, Crete

  • 5 of 5

Our group of four friends (combined age 230) stayed at the Old Olive Mill for a week in October 2016. It is an amazing place, very comfortable and well equipped, beautifully restored and cared for, with lots of lovely homely touches. Soaking in the jacuzzi after a long gorge walk, or waking to a cool morning dip in the pool, really added to the whole experience. As did drinking freshly squeezed juice from the orange trees in the quiet and secluded villa garden. The owners, Mark and Jill, were incredibly helpful and welcoming, going out of their way to make our holiday so relaxing and enjoyable. The village itself is a typical Cretan hill village, with several tavernas, our favourite being Armos, run by Violetta and her husband, but the others were also excellent. There is a cheese shop (lovely feta and halloumi) and a herbalist. The mini market is down the hill (c. 1 km) and a car is definitely needed to make the most of this wonderful location. We were particularly taken by the kindness and hospitality of the Cretan people, as well as the food and wine, which were delicious and good value. We had the most fantastic week at the Old Olive Mill and thoroughly recommend it.

Great Stay at the Old Olive Mill

  • 4 of 5

The Old Olive Mill had virtually everything we needed for a relaxing stay. This conversion had been carried out very tastefully and the photos did not convey just how spacious and charming it is. We particularly enjoyed the courtyard garden area and the small swimming pool. Maroulas is an interesting historic village and there were several good tavernas within a short drive of the villa.

This may sound a bit picky but we would have liked the kitchen to have more pots and pans as we like to cook on occasion as well as visiting the local restaurants. Other than this minor issue we had a fantastic holiday and we intend to return at some point.

Fantastic Holiday

  • 5 of 5

Just wanted to say what a fantastic holiday we had at the Olive Mill earlier this year. So much so we have just booked again for next year!

The villa is beautiful with absolutely everything we needed to relax and enjoy our holiday. We loved being up in the mountains with the fabulous views and quiet location, yet only a 10 minute drive to the beaches and busier town life.

Thanks to Mark and Jill too who were very helpful giving us suggestions on the best places to eat and drink and which places to visit. It made the holiday very easy and stress free!

Lovely house in Maroulas

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful house in a peaceful village, with easy access to the whole island (we rented cars). We were three couples and one child and stayed here for a week - there was plenty of room for everyone, the house did not feel crowded. I strongly recommend this place!

Beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with our three kids for about 10 days at the Old Olive Mill. The house was beautifully decorated and furnished and had a very personal feel. We loved the privacy of the courtyard and the little pool. Our hosts were very helpful in assisting us with any problems that arose and provided helpful advice about restaurants and sight-seeing. We loved Crete and the Old Olive Mill definitely provided a safe, quiet haven for relaxation as we took in all the sights of the area.

Beautiful villa away from the crowds

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week at the Olive Mill in Maroulas with our 1 year old baby and parents. On arrival at the villa Mark and Jill the owners were waiting for us with the warmest welcome and a cold beer and bottle of wine on arrival and had even stocked up on essentials like fresh bread, butter and eggs to get us started for the holiday which was a nice touch.

The villa itself is amazing, having been restored from the two arches in the living room over 12 years by the owners. The photos do not do the villa justice as the main living area is an airy and cool retreat from the hot sun with lots of space for our baby to run around in. The bedrooms are furnished to a high standard and the bathrooms are hotel standard with powerful and hot showers. It was like a home from home.

The garden is delightful and we spent a lot of time relaxing in the dining space or in the hot tub and our parents made use of the sun terrace in the mornings.

Maroulas is a laid back little village and great if you want to get away from the crowds and big resorts. There are several decent local tavernas to dine at (Thavma being our favourite) and also a lovely shop Marianna's, where you can pick up gorgeous handmade essential oils and herbal remedies. The location of Maroulas is also an excellent base from which to explore the Rethymno, Hania and Iraklio regions.

We would definitely come here again and recommend it to friends and family visiting Crete.

Further Details:

Crete's third largest town, the beautiful harbour of Rethymnon, is a Greek treat and a half. You only need to take a stroll around its intricate maze of streets, laced with white-washed cottages, past fine buildings and churches and you'll experience the real Crete. It seems little has changed for decades here. The open air markets are as lively as ever, and the shops, the tavernas and al fresco restaurants fizz with activity. And wherever you wander, you'll notice the influence of previous visitors. The Venetians held Rethymnon in high regard and their architecture can be seen in quiet courtyards and elaborate fountains, as well as the huge fortress which stands above the harbour, presenting a stern face northwards across the Sea of Crete. Yet for all its authentic charm, everything you could need here is to hand and there's a great range of accommodation to suit every style and budget. Plus of course, there's that all-important beach. A palm-fringed promenade backs a beautiful beach of pale sand and shingle which stretches for several kilometres. And if you want to let your adventurous side shine, you can surf the waves on a jet ski, feel the wind rushing through your hair from the back of a speed boat or learn to windsurf. After dark, start your night in one of the bars or tavernas - many of which have entertainment - before heading to a disco. The key to keeping up with the Cretans is to start late - most don't even think about eating their evening meal until around nine, and bars stay open until the very early hours. So what are you waiting for?
