About hilary holden

Despite living in Suffolk for years, I didn't discover Mersea Island until a few years ago. I fell in love with it! Unspoilt, beautiful estuary walks and sunsets, fabulous seafood especially the oysters, friendly people, lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants, swimming in the sea, watching the boats...perfect. It's our family holiday home, and with grandchildren now, it is a wonderful place for children to have a proper, old fashioned, British seaside holiday. We have had such fun, relaxing times on this special island, and we hope you do too.

hilary holden purchased this cottage in 2012

Why hilary holden chose Essex

The really special thing about Mersea Island is....it's a bit of a well kept secret. It isn't "Hampstead-by-the-sea" as some parts of the east Anglia coast have been labelled now. It's not overly touristy, there are lots of local people born and bred here, there is still a fishing and sail making industry here. There are lots of independent local shops. The bottom line is, it hasn't been spoilt. It's peaceful, but not remote. There is lots to do, but equally, it's somewhere you can kick back and relax. The sea air does that. As we drive over the "strood" (the Roman roadway on to the island), it's like we pull up the drawbridge, take a deep breath, and r-e-l-a-x

What makes this cottage unique

One of our favourite things we like to do as a family, is take a glass of wine with us down to the sea, all of a minutes amble, sit on the sea wall and watch the sun go down over the water. When we have little ones at the cottage, a favourite past-time is crabbing off the pontoon, making sandcastles, swimming in the sea, going out on the water taxi, taking toddlers for an art class session in the town (then leaving them there with Dad, while mum pops next door to the art cafe for a cappuccino with friends).

We've become very lazy, popping round the corner to the Blackwater Pearl cafe for a cooked breakfast, before walking the dogs to get up an appetite for scallops and oysters for lunch at the Oyster bar. It's a hard life....

A very cosy house for six persons

  • 5 of 5

We are a family from Germany, who loves Essex, the east cost, very much. The Lane is a quite and originally street right to come to the yacht clubs and oyster bars. The smallest house of Essex, The Nutshell, is in the neighbourhood of Anchorage Mews.

Anchorage Mews, the house, is very lovely furnished and is equiped very well. It is really to be recommended! Stefanie

relaxing homely retreat

  • 5 of 5

we were staying to attend my sons wedding and needed 3 double rooms for adult couples, we were so pleased with the comfort of each room, space and the necessary 2 shower rooms. Blissfully relaxing place to be, Oyster Bar was great, as was the coast inn. walks in the sun and spotting Sammy the seal all made for a wonderful weekend--including the wedding of course! detail of provision on arrival and flowers were a lovely homely touch. thank you for sharing your home.

Lovely peaceful cottage.

  • 5 of 5

Tucked away up a quiet lane a stone's throw from the sea, Anchorage Mews is a lovely cottage in which to get away from it all. Clean and well maintained, with tea bags, coffee and milk provided on arrival it seemed that everything had been thought of to make our stay as stress free as possible; even a stair gate for our toddler grandson. Hilary was so helpful and gave us lots of information about the facilities as one of our daughters is disabled (the cottage is not suitable for those who cannot climb stairs however). We enjoyed the Coast Inn one evening which is close by, and had a lovely meal. They were great with the children too (2 year old and 4 month old). Would love to go back again one day and stay a bit longer. Highly recommended.

home from home

set in a small lane very near the sea front and pubs at which we had some good meals, good walks along the beach with our two dogs, the coast Inn is dog friendly as well, the cottage was clean, tidy, and had every thing you could need, really nice beds, and a small yard, the utility room at the back was great for the dogs, to dry off and sleep, we took a baby gate to put across the door to this room, as our dogs are used to that at home, The owner gave us all the information we needed , and we will use this cottage again some time soon .
