About hilary holden

Despite living in Suffolk for years, I didn't discover Mersea Island until a few years ago. I fell in love with it! Unspoilt, beautiful estuary walks and sunsets, fabulous seafood especially the oysters, friendly people, lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants, swimming in the sea, watching the boats...perfect. It's our family holiday home, and with grandchildren now, it is a wonderful place for children to have a proper, old fashioned, British seaside holiday. We have had such fun, relaxing times on this special island, and we hope you do too.

hilary holden purchased this cottage in 2012

Why hilary holden chose Borough of Colchester

The really special thing about Mersea Island is....it's a bit of a well kept secret. It isn't "Hampstead-by-the-sea" as some parts of the east Anglia coast have been labelled now. It's not overly touristy, there are lots of local people born and bred here, there is still a fishing and sail making industry here. There are lots of independent local shops. The bottom line is, it hasn't been spoilt. It's peaceful, but not remote. There is lots to do, but equally, it's somewhere you can kick back and relax. The sea air does that. As we drive over the "strood" (the Roman roadway on to the island), it's like we pull up the drawbridge, take a deep breath, and r-e-l-a-x

What makes this cottage unique

One of our favourite things we like to do as a family, is take a glass of wine with us down to the sea, all of a minutes amble, sit on the sea wall and watch the sun go down over the water. When we have little ones at the cottage, a favourite past-time is crabbing off the pontoon, making sandcastles, swimming in the sea, going out on the water taxi, taking toddlers for an art class session in the town (then leaving them there with Dad, while mum pops next door to the art cafe for a cappuccino with friends).

We've become very lazy, popping round the corner to the Blackwater Pearl cafe for a cooked breakfast, before walking the dogs to get up an appetite for scallops and oysters for lunch at the Oyster bar. It's a hard life....

Guestbook comments from the manager

The house is so well equipped, we particularly liked the big comfortable beds! And the location is perfect. We had a lovely time.

Brilliant cottage in mersea

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful cottage, perfectly located in Mersea. The cottage is exremely bright, spacious and tastefully decorated. The beds are extremely comfortable and there are two good bathrooms, which is more than enough for 6 people. If you enjoy seafood, it is only a few minutes walk to the Company Shed. It is a perfect spot for exploring Mersea and we had a wonderful stay here.

Wonderfully roomy and cosy cottage!!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage was VERY nice, the pictures do NOT do it justice!! We were surprised to see how big it was, the bedrooms were quite large and the beds super comfy. Absolutely will be booking again next year! Plenty of local pubs for drinks and excellent food, very short 2 minute walk to the water! We enjoyed watching the sun going down at the shore and walking our dog on the paths nearby. Thank you so much for a wonderfully relaxing friends getaway, was wonderful to come back and relax in the living room and have some laughs!

Perfect location to explore Mersea.

  • 4 of 5

Ideal location as cottage is less than a minute from waterfront. Well presented and spotless. Great to have wood burner as the day of arrival was chilly and it bought a coziness to the downstairs. Secure rear courtyard for children or dogs which if warm would be lovely for eating/drinking in. Beds and pillows very very comfortable and bedding quality. Our only slight negative would be really need more comfortable chairs in lounge. Sofa fine but chairs not for any length of time. All in all a most enjoyable stay.

Best seaside holiday

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely spacious cottage just yards from waterfront.

We loved everything from eating ice cream, catching crabs (bacon is the best bait), building sand castles and eating fish from the Company Shed.

A super find in a wonderful location, we loved it.

  • 5 of 5

We had a super 6 night stay and all wished that we had more nights!! Anchorage Mews more than exceeded our expectations and we were very happy knowing that we had such a great place to come back to after a long day on the beach.

It's in a perfect location to be able to enjoy all that Mersea Island has to offer, delicious seafood, walks on the beach, crabbing, boat trips, watersports and some great Restaurants too!!

The property has all you need to enjoy a more than comfortable stay, thoughtfully included are linens, towels, all the kitchen equipment you need and more.

Anchorage Mews is extremely well maintained and very clean, we would 100% recommend staying here to everyone, but not when we would like to go again!!!

The beach is a two minute walk, and is pebbly with sand. Crabbing is done from the pontoon, a three minute walk. The best swimming in the sea is a five minute car drive or twenty minute walk along the beach. Sailing, kite surfing, paddle boarding all available on the island. Favorite spot for bird watchers East Mersea. Colchester is 8 miles away with all the facilities of a large town.

Historic Colchester, with a modern shopping centre, cinema, leisure centre, zoo is only 8 miles away. Ipswich, similar, is thirty minutes drive. There are picturesque estuary villages , wildlife reserves such as Fingringhoe wick and Merseas Cudmore grove. Take the foot ferry from East Mersea to Brightlingsea, . Within easy driving are beautiful historic local towns such as Halstead, and villages like Lavenham and Kersey. Plus Constable country is only half an hours drive.

Further Details:
