About the Owner

Despite living in Suffolk for years, we didn't discover Mersea Island until four years ago. We fell in love with it! Unspoilt, beautiful estuary walks and sunsets, fabulous seafood especially the oysters, friendly people, lovely cafes, pubs and restaurants, swimming in the sea, watching the boats...perfect. It's our family holiday home, and with grandchildren on the horizon it will be a wonderful place for children to have a proper, old fashioned, British seaside holiday. New to the market for the season of 2013, we have tried it out on friends and family. We have had such fun, relaxing times on this special island, and we hope you do too.

peaceful, spacious retreat

  • 5 of 5

A lovely cottage in a quiet little lane, with all you need for a peaceful break. We were attending a wedding, so rented it for a long weekend. There were 6 of us and we found the cottage spacious and very clean and comfortable with comfy beds and quality bedding and a well equipped kitchen( including a cafetiere) The decor is calm and unfussy, creating a relaxed atmosphere. There is a large fridge freezer and a washing machine (in attached utility room) and efficient cooker and dishwasher (w.up liquid and dishwasher tabs were provided). The outside area is small and private and has a nice decked area, edged with trees and plants, where we sat out around the table and had breakfast, listening to the birds-bliss! Towels were provided for everyone, but no spares. You will need to take shower gel/soap, though liquid hand wash is provided. If you are staying for a weekend or longer, don't forget extra toilet rolls! Tea/coffee sachets and pint of milk provided (and very welcome) for that much needed 'cuppa' after travelling! There is a Co-op a short drive from the house, for supplies, including beach toys (and good selection of wine!)The cottage is a very short walk from the shore, where you can look at the boats, go crabbing, buy hats and ice creams, go on a boat trip, or eat at one of the restaurants or cafes. 'The Company Shed' is a must if you eat seafood and The Coast Inn does great lunches as well as being a good place to sit outside with a drink and look out over the water. The cottage owner, Hilary, was very helpful and booking was simple. We will definitely be going back!

wonderful cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at the cottage for three nights. Had a wonderful time. The cottage was perfect for us. Very close to the Company Shed and The Coast Inn where we had fantastic meals. 5/10 minute walk into the village where you can find everything you need for a short stay. Quite a few restaurants, the usual curry, chinese, and now a new Italian pizza/pasta restaurant. It was part of my mums 80th birthday treats and she thoroughly enjoyed it especially being so close to everything and didn't have to walk too far. It was great to be able to take along my beloved dog who felt at home immediately. Normally stay in a local pub but the cottage suited our needs much better. The cottage was very well equipped, wonderful sized beds (bigger than I have at home), two bathrooms and so cosy. Nice touch to be left milk, tea, coffee and fresh flowers on our arrival. Would certainly recommend this cottage (don't go when we want to stay!) Thank you so much for letting us stay and we will absolutely be returning again! x

Delightful Break

  • 5 of 5

I couldn't fault our stay. Even Hurricane Kate couldn't dampen our spirits. The cottage is situated just a 2 minute walk to the harbour, boat yards and, the all important, Oyster Sheds.

The house was clean, linen good quality, well-furnished and plenty of space for the 6 adults to stay - and our miniature schnauzers. There's a small area behind the kitchen where wet dogs can be rubbed and left if and when you go out for supper. The walled garden is small but has everything you need; a bit of sun and a decent table. There was plenty of space in the front room for all of us to settle down and watch a movie.

There are good coffee shops nearby. We walked about 20 mins along Coast Road to the Art Cafe (mostly along the beach) which was very nice. I'd say that the pubs are more for dining than drinking - although there was plenty of space to sprawl in the sun outside the Coast Inn - though we weren't that fond of the food.

The Shed was fun to eat in at lunch time - take your own wine and bread.

We'd definitely recommend Anchorage Mews - in fact I have to two people already and I'd definitely return.

Ideal place to stay all year round

  • 5 of 5

With one of Mersea's key attractions being the company shed, anchorage mews is a stones through away, allowing you to be on the front in a minutes walk. The cottage itself has been the perfect place to stay throughout the year with friends and the children (travel cot provided fully assembled upon arrival) The raised decking at the rear is a great sun trap with bbq provided for the warmer months and there's the wood burner for the colder times of year. Having stayed at anchorage mews twice now, The cottage has always been exceptionally clean and homely, with all immediate needs catered for, modern facilities and a fabulous hand written guide of the local area and points of interest. Highly recommended when staying in Mersea.

A Good Choice

  • 4 of 5

We had our second stay in this property. We chose it again because it is very comfortable, well appointed and well located. On both occasions, we have visited in the winter. This is a good test of anywhere and Anchorage Mews has been a warm and welcoming. The house is very well maintained and all communications with the owner and housekeeper are friendly and helpful. ( I left my specs behind!) We know Mersea very well and find access to everything easy from this property.

Anchorage Mews was very comfortable and well appointed. The location was perfect for exploring Mersea and our dog loved the walks. Lots of good eating places are on the doorstep, The Company Shed is a must if you like fish and seafood. All in all a lovely stay.

Location

From the Owner

The really special thing about Mersea Island is....it's a bit of a well kept secret. It isn't "Hampstead-by-the-sea" as some parts of the east Anglia coast have been labelled now. It's not overly touristy, there are lots of local people born and bred here, there is still a fishing and sail making industry here. There are lots of independent local shops. The bottom line is, it hasn't been spoilt. It's peaceful, but not remote. There is lots to do, but equally, it's somewhere you can kick back and relax. The sea air does that. As we drive over the "strood" (the Roman roadway on to the island), it's like we pull up the drawbridge, take a deep breath, and r-e-l-a-x

The beach is a two minute walk, and is pebbly with sand. Crabbing is done from the pontoon, a three minute walk. The best swimming in the sea is a five minute car drive or twenty minute walk along the beach. Sailing, kite surfing, paddle boarding all available on the island. Favorite spot for bird watchers East Mersea. Colchester is 8 miles away with all the facilities of a large town.

Travel:

Nearest airport is Stansted, an hour away. London is an hours drive, or 50 minutes by train. Harwich port is 45 minutes away.

Distances:

There are picturesque estuary villages , wildlife reserves such as Fingringhoe wick and Merseas Cudmore grove. Take the foot ferry from East Mersea to Brightlingsea, . Within easy driving are beautiful historic local towns such as Halstead, and villages like Lavenham and Kersey. Plus Constable country is only half an hours drive.

Further Details:

Within two minute and five minute walks are quiet country walks, two public houses, which also serve food, two seafood bars, two sailing clubs, two cafes. One of the cafes sells wine, milk etc. A short 15 minute walk or 5 minute drive brings you to the centre of West Mersea with supermarkets, banks, post office, cafes, delicatessens, petrol station, restaurants, takeaways, etc. The island is an attraction for windsurfers, canoeists, sailors, kite surfers, paddle boarders, cyclists and walkers. Plus Colchester, a main town with leisure centre, cinema, zoo and high street shops is only 8 ,miles away.

Facilities

From the Owner

One of our favourite things we like to do, is take a glass of wine with us down to the sea, all of a minutes amble, sit on the sea wall and watch the sun go down over the water. When we have little ones at the cottage, a favourite past-time is crabbing off the pontoon, making sandcastles, swimming in the sea, going out on the water taxi, taking toddlers for an art class session in the town (then leaving them there with Dad, while mum pops next door to the art cafe for a cappuccino with friends). We become very lazy, popping round the corner to the Blackwater Pearl cafe for a cooked breakfast, before walking the dogs to get up an appetite for scallops and oysters for lunch at the Oyster bar. It's a hard life....
