18th Century Former Fisherman's Cottage In Staithes

Updated: 05-Oct-2016
Beachside Cottage, Staithes, Nr. Whitby, North Yorkshire Moors, Yorkshire, England - Harbourside Cottage In A Traditional Fishing Village Celebrated As The Home Of Captain Cook

Beachside is a two storey two bedroomed cottage, with one double bedroom and one with full sized bunk beds. The bathroom has a roll top bath and electric shower. Downstairs is a living room with dining area and a separate kitchen. It is right down in the heart of this traditional fishing village close to harbour and beach. It is ideal for families, walkers and others wishing to explore the North York Moors National Park. A few miles east is the Victorian seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea and to the west is the ancient port of Whitby, picturesque Robin Hood's Bay and the busy resort of Scarborough. Staithes is well served with cafés, pubs and bistro, with Captain Cook and Staithes Heritage museums, an art gallery and craft centre full of the works of local artists. There is no parking in the village though visitors may park temporarily to unload and load cars. All visitors park at the top of the bank in a pay and display car park. We provide a parking permit for use in this car park.

A deposit of £60 secures the booking with the remainder payable 6 weeks before arrival. We have both cheque and bank transfer facility. We do not have credit/debit card option.

However if you want to use your credit or debit card and pay in full Homeaway has this facility.

charming , quaint , cottage by the sea

Exactly as described. Everything you would need, well equipped. Their was no garden, the description stated small garden, it was more a utility space with a small grid. Had a lovely break and Staithes is a lovely little fishing village.

Owner's Response: Thankyou for your review of Beachside and I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay in Staithes. I have just checked the cottage details and there is no mention of a small garden. There was 'a small yard' mentioned which as you said was a utility space with a cupboard containing a washing machine and another cupboard which was used for storage. I will go now and change the description to include a 'utility space' in order to clarify what is there. Thankyou again and hope to see you in the future Regards Pauline .

Good location, but tired, grubby cottage

  • 2 of 5

Great location in Staithes despite having to pay £4 per extra in the non council car park due to previous guest "losing" the permit.

Walk up to car park is approx. 10 mins.

The cottage is of tired décor and needs at least a lick of paint & new carpets which are very grubby.

The cottage had been cleaned with minimal effort and felt grubby in most places.

Like most sea towns around the UK, there is zero mobile reception down in Staithes but some patchy reception in car park.

Only giving 2 stars due to good location.

Owner's Response: I'm really sorry your review of the cottage only merited 2 stars. This is the first negative review we have had posted since we began letting Beachside. I agree that a refurb is required and this was to take place in Spring this year but due to family illness it had to be postponed. However it will happen in the near future and decoration is already organised. We do say in our guidelines that the parking permit does rely on the previous guest leaving it and that we do not accept responsibility for parking costs. Sorry we did all we could to rectify the situation. We phoned Scarboro council as soon as we knew the permit was missing on Mon May 30th and paid for a replacement. They assured us it would be sent immediately. We then emailed you to tell you to open any mail which had arrived. You understood the situation as you had already phoned the council on June 3rd and they confirmed it would be sent out. It wasn't!! When we recontacted the council they said the Bank Holiday was to blame. It took 3 weeks to arrive. I really don't know what we can do to make sure the permit is left and it has only happened once before. The comment you left in our Visitors Book indicated you had enjoyed your stay in Staithes.

Just right

The cottage is quaint without being twee. Small without being cramped. Great location, well knitted out and cosy for an autumn break.

Market Harborough

Great location.

  • 4 of 5

A simple, good value cottage, especially given that a parking pass and coal/wood for the open fire are included. Owners are laid back and they trust their guests, e.g. No damage deposit is requested. House is a perfect size for a couple or young family. Literally a stone's throw from the beach. Decent shower and kitchen facilities. Double bed is uncomfortable. There is no internet access - it's only available in a pub 100 yards down the road. Staithes itself is enchanting and very dog friendly.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review which was fair. Yes we do operate with a great deal of trust and we rarely have problems. As you say our cottage is ideal for families with its location near the beach as well as to a family friendly pub. We will have another look at the bed and resolve this issue. Regards from the owners

Fabulous cottage

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this cottage and in particular the sympathetic way it has been updated without loosing its character. It has absolutely everything you would need for a holiday and is cosy and comfortable. We stayed in October and the open fire was a real treat. It was lovely sitting around it watching the flames and chatting. The beds are so comfortable and the village so quiet we had our best nights sleep for ages!! Staithes is a true find - real old fashioned fishing village which hasn't been spoilt but still has two pubs and a few other eating places. We loved everything about it and will be back.

Fabulous Cosy Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at this fabulous cottage for three nights end of September, what a great find. Cottage was welcoming and quaint, was so comfortable and very dog friendly which was a must for us. Owners kindly leave a massive supply of logs, coal and kindling for the lovely open fire which was fantastic in the evenings. All walks in area are stunning we walked over the cliff tops from Staithes to Saltburn, did Whitby to Sandsend and also Runswick Bay. Both pubs in Staithes were lovely for meals at reasonable prices and the Cod and Lobster is on the door step. Would definitely recommend this cottage for a break at any time of year.

From the Owner

Beachside is in 'one of those North Yorkshire places to lust after for a blissful weekend getaway...always a magnet for artists it has an easy creative vibe. Summer brings buckets, spades and giant lobsters and winter it's windswept and atmospheric....'Luxe Sept 1916

Activity and Interests

The cottage is a few steps from the harbour wall and a small beach. A walk along the spectacular cliff top leads to other villages and beaches with fossil hunting opportunities

Car hire is not essential for a holiday and many families stay around the area and spend time walking. However it would be useful for going further afield in the National Park. There is a bus service to nearby Whitby and other villages.

Nearest airport is Durham/Tees Valley approx 50 miles.

Saltburn 7 miles. Whitby - 10miles, Redcar 12 miles.

Further Details:

There are shops, an art gallery and cafés, pubs and bistro in the village itself as well as a supermarket and post office.

There are banks in Saltburn, Whitby and Redcar.

Apart from the attractions in the village itself (boat trips, fishing trips, art and crafts museum etc) the nearby towns and villages and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park have a huge range of places of interest and leisure activities.

The Esk Valley railway train offers stunning views and at Grosmont it links in with the North Yorkshire Moors steam line to Pickering. Tiny villages and hamlets, often set in deep valleys all have special attractions varying from ruined abbeys, bronze age burial mounds, tiny inns, waterfalls and of course the area is a haven for wildlife.

For a great family day out go to the Moors National Park Centre at Danby. The area is great walking country, the Cleveland Way goes through Staithes, and it's also a beautiful area for cycling, with challenging hill climbs, quiet country lanes and a number of designated cycle paths.

The Moors themselves are home to the largest expanse of heather moorland in England, beautiful throughout the year but in late summer the purple of the flowers stretches as far as the eye can see.

The rocks of North Yorkshire are famous for their fossils and the coast has been nicknamed The Dinosaur Coast, and the tall cliffs yield many interesting specimens. Spectacular examples can be seen in the Whitby Museum.

Beachside has many features reminiscent of bygone days - the fireplace and surround in the living room as well as the second bedroom: the original beams; the roll top bath and unique sink with its wrought iron feature; the slate floor downstairs The most important feature however is Beachside's proximity to the sea and beach..
