Overview

About the property

Cottage in West Calder, Nr. Edinburgh, Scotland

Gairnshiel Cottage offers delightful recently refurbished holiday accommodation. It is situated between West Calder and Carnwath in the heart of the Scottish countryside but still within 40 minutes drive of two stunning cities – Edinburgh and Glasgow. The views from the cottage are breathtaking: it has a wonderful position on the organic farm of South Cobbinshaw overlooking the Pentland Hills and Cobbinshaw Loch. The 310 acre loch was built in 1818 to feed the Union Canal and was also used by passing steam trains to collect water. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSI) due to wintering wildfowl and is popular with anglers and birdwatchers. For those who enjoy the outdoors nearby Harburn Golf Club is a challenging 18-hole parkland course and there are walks of all levels starting literally on your doorstep. If shopping is your thing - the designer shops of Livingston are 15 minutes away and unique little shops and galleries are found in Biggar and Peebles.

Guestbook comments from the owner

'During our 2 week stay we loved everyday being in this cosy cottage while the big cities were so close by! The views are magnificent, the peace and quiet so different from home. New Lanark was truly a revelation to explore and Bo'ness a lovely village on the Firth of Forth. It was a great holiday!' James, Holland

'This cottage is better than everything we expected. A lovely stunning cottage in a beautiful and quiet environment. We had great weather and a great time in Scotland.' Annette, Steffen & Carmen Schrapel, Germany

'Very well refurbished and a good range of kit in the kitchen, very efficient heating for us two cold morsels. Well situated for going out and about on the beautiful lowlands. The Mrs has informed me that we'll be back and I agree. Very comfortable cottage.' Andy & Janice Biddle, Hampshire

'Thankyou very much for your kind hospitality. We enjoyed your fresh vegetables and of course your lovely cottage' Skeates Family, Durham

Beautiful place

  • 4 of 5

What a beautiful place, the views are stunning, the cottage has everything you need apart from a few leaflets on places to visit and places to eat... Otherwise everything was great...

Quite comfortable cottage . Very remote

  • 3 of 5

External photo very misleading! Owner's house 4 metres from your front door looking directly into your front room and dining room. Blinds had to be permanently drawn for privacy. When you go somewhere fairly remote and rural you expect exactly that. Does rather defeat the purpose and thus made it difficult for us as a family properly to chill out from our busy lives.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry that you were unhappy with the cottage. We certainly didn't intend to mislead you and would have been happy to answer any questions regarding location etc prior to your booking. The small windows 'across' from the cottage dining room are our utility and vestibule which we do not linger in and certainly don't 'look ' in at guests from. Apologies once again for your disappointment and I hope it didn't spoil your holiday.

Peaceful, cozy, blissful. A superb experience!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, with our dog, required de-stress time! This was completely achieved at Gairnshiel Cottage. The accommodation had everything you would need and more - roaring log fire each evening, a kitchen with all appliances/paraphynalia which we could not fault, private back garden where we could safely let our dog roam into, comfy king size bed, wonderful views, Wi Fi. Grocer and butcher not too far away. Local area great for walks and whilst we did not roam too far, we could have done so, if wished, as plenty to do and see in the area. This may be unbelievable to some of you - the weather was cold but dry the whole week! I know, we couldn't believe our luck either! All booking arrangements were managed swiftly with e-mails from Lynda herself. We would have no hesitation in returning to this cottage and we can recommend it to others. Many thanks to Lynda and family for delivering exactly what it says on the tin!
