About david winstone

I am a health professional and bought this property in 2005. It became a labour of love in designing and renovating the property between 2010 and 2012. It has been converted to a very high standard with solid oak flooring and staircase, underfloor heating, and electric velux windows and blinds in the master bedroom.

david winstone purchased this barn in 2005

Why david winstone chose Vengeons

It was a perfect balance of being easy to access from the ports, and also well positoned for both trips to the beaches of the west coast and also exploration into unspoilt rural Normandy. It is in a peaceful village, but not too quiet and remote - there are other houses around but no shops in the village. However the shops of Sourdeval are just a 5 minute drive away. I also enjoy the open air heated swimming pool in nearby Mortain. For a larger town Vire is just a 10 minute drive. One day I intend to cycle in a day on the dedicated cycle track to the Mont de Michel.

What makes this barn unique

I wanted a holiday home which had a taste of luxury, spaciousness and calm. I enjoy the quality fittings and modern conveniences like broadband which keep me in touch with the world. Equally, I can turn it all off and enjoy quiet reflective walks with no noise nor reminders of modern life. It is a friendly village, generally quiet, free from traffic but not isolated. Overall, a perfect combination.

Excellent garden for children, which extends down into woods. Or the gate down to the larger garden can be closed allowing a smaller area for small children to be supervised (or dogs too for that matter - fences are dog proofed with mesh).

Foldable TABLE TENNIS table is easily set up on the patio for games for all.

2 bicycles are also available for use.

'Just wanted to say what a lovely time we had in La Maison Calme. Its a fantastic property in a great location and Martin did an excellent job of making us feel welcome. The property has everything you need and has been renovated beautifully, The village is lovely and peaceful...

I will defintely be recommending your property to friends and family if they wish to visit the Normandy area.' (Pam, May 2013)

'totally wow'd by your gorgeous barn..& will be back as it is perfect for exploring, relaxing & taking in the French countryside, it has everything we could need & want,.. Your wi-if is lovely & fast!..

Many thanks ' (Nikola, May 2013)

As an architect I am often critical of poor conversions but Maison de Calme is the exact opposite...well laid out...beautifully crafted spaces..feels so much more spacious than i expected...the electric Velux windows allowing perfect ventilation and the views are wonderful... a perfect break...so accessable(J)

Lovely comfortable house in a beautiful quiet countryside.

  • 5 of 5

House is beautiful built and was extremely comfortable for our 3 generation family of six. Location is good for visiting Mont Saint Michel and D Day beaches and just hanging out. The runners reported excellent running opportunities. Wonderful base for a relaxing country vacation.

Absolute amazing place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our long weekend in this beautiful barn in a lovely little village. Everyone we met was very kind and helpful. I can highly recommend it. It is a very quiet area but close enough to bigger towns and tourist attractions so for us was perfect. Wish to come back again for a longer holiday.

One of the best holidays we have taken

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful week away in this fantastic cottage.

Communication with the owner prior to our visit was extremely helpful and Martin, the caretaker called in to welcome us and was on hand if we needed him throughout the week.

This cottage is deceptively spacious throughout. Very well equipped with everything from a dishwasher, washing machine right through to UK TV stations. We felt very much at home from the very start of our stay. The furnishings was very good quality and we found the cottage very well cleaned on our arrival. The property is well maintained.

The main bedroom has a lovely ensuite and was very spacious and comfortable. The second bedroom, again spacious and further bathroom are located on the same floor. There is a lovely bedroom in the attic space.

We loved the open plan layout downstairs and the back door led on to a spacious patio where we ate a lot of the time as well as playing table tennis as a family.

The rear garden is huge and I can imagine a wonderful place for children to play whilst parents watch from the patio.

A great location for visiting some wonderful places. We visited Mont St Michel, Bayeux town and the tapestry, D Day landing beaches and museums and local towns and villages. There is a wonderful cycle path nearby too.

We mainly shopped locally in Sourdeval, just 4 km away with a small supermarket with its own butchers and a bakery opposite. The vet here was fantastic, helpful and also spoke English very well. Vire is also not far away with Carrefour and Lidl as well as many other lovely shops - definitely worth a visit too.

There is very good wifi here and we had a very good mobile phone signal too.

We plan to return here again for another holiday and would highly recommend this place to all whether just a couple or a large family.

Fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

My family had a fantastic holiday. The location is ideal for the attractions in Normandy. The village of Vengeons is quiet with the restaurants and shops available nearby in Vire. Recommend the walks near Sourdeval and Mortain.

This part of Normandy is known as 'The Bocage Area' and is renowned for it's rolling hills and stunning countryside. It has a famous walk way and cycle path called the VOIE VERTE, 'The Green Way' which is a disused railway track that runs from Normandy into Brittany. You can join this walk way from the back road to Sourdeval and make your way to Sourdeval or Mortain (where there is a heated open air swimming pool and stunning views) or even Avranches or Vire.

Vire is very attractive with fantastic shops and numerous restaurants. It's weekly market is every Friday. It has an indoor swimming pool and a Hippodrome where you can enjoy a days 'trotting' or flat racing.

St Sever holds it's farmer market on Saturday. it has a huge Depot Vente which sells 2nd hand furniture, ornaments etc and it boast a large open air swimming pool and many bars. Villedieu les Poeles is a listed village d'etape and is famous for it's brass. Lac De La Dathee is about 10 minutes drive where you can enjoy a game of golf on it's championship 18 hole course or just enjoy a walk around it (6km round).

Other pastimes to enjoy here are canoeing, pedalos, kayaks, sailing and windsurfing. Fishing is also very popular and a weekend permit can be bought for 10 euros. The River See is renowned for being one of the best salmon and brown trout rivers in France. For those daredevils there is the opportunity to bungee jump from the Viaduc de la Souleuvre at La Ferriere Harang and designed by Gustave Eiffel.

Further afield is Le Mont St Michel which was named by the Guardian newspaper as one of the top 10 romantic places to go in the world. Granville is about 45 minutes drive and is a cosmopolitan town with many chic boutiques and some delicious fish restaurants by the harbour. From Granville you can catch the ferry to Iles Chausey (the flora and fauna is stunning here) or a ferry to Jersey in 1 hour 10 minutes.

Even go to Paris for a day or night ! The train is 2.5 hours Vire-Paris
