Maison en Pierre Holiday Home St Juire Champgillon, Vendee, Pays de la Loire, France - Village Location, Only 45 Minutes To The Beaches Of The Southern Vendee

La Maison en Pierre been totally restored by its current owners and is now presented as a high quality 5 bedroom holiday home, with lots of original features, such as exposed oak beams and stone walls.

The house is set in a village location - with a restaurant, bar, hairdresser and weekly summer market all nearby. There are large landscaped gardens and an enclosed gravelled courtyard with al fresco dining areas.

The 12m x 5m heated pool and paddling pool are securely fenced off from the rest of the garden, and there are sun loungers and views across the level gardens.

Wi-Fi internet access is available in the house and around the pool area. There is also a PC for your use.

Inside, there is a large lounge with leather sofas and a formal dining area with a large table seating 10 guests. The lounge leads on to the kitchen which has a breakfast table with benches, large range cooker and separate utility area.

One of the double bedrooms is located on the ground floor, as is a shower room and WC – making it ideal for guests with limited mobility.

Upstairs there are four further bedrooms (2 double bedrooms and two twin bedrooms), each with its own en suite shower/bath room.

The gravelled courtyard has an alfresco dining area and access to the well-stocked games room.

The landscaped gardens (5000m²) are mostly laid to lawns and there is a swing set and vegetable garden to explore.

This house shares the pool, courtyard, games room and gardens with our other 2 bedroom holiday home - La Vieille Maison - and can be rented individually or together with this house. Each house has a private courtyard area with tables and chairs, screened off from the other house.

This is an ideal base from which to explore the Vendee - with many country lanes that are great for walking & cycling, and lots of other activities nearby - such as the Puy du Fou Theme Park, The forest & lake at Mervent, The Marais Poitevin and the medieval Donjon at Bazoges en Pareds.

Why Annette Khan chose Vendee

La Maison en Pierre and La Vieille Maison are owned by our good friends Mick & Jan Waters who came to France in the summer of 2005.

Having renovated, and in some cases, pretty much re-built 3 houses in the UK, they decided to give it a go in France, so in March 2005 they started house-hunting. By May they had found just what they were looking for, although on a little larger scale than they were used to in the south of England!

Without any doubts, they quit their hectic jobs, sold their home in the UK and embarked on their new life here in rural France, along with there 15 year old, one-eyed, toothless cat, Alex.

The reservations for this house are managed by Annette Khan.

What makes this house unique

Mick & Jan love the relaxed lifestyle that goes with village life here in the Vendee. Mick has taken to brewing his own beer and making some great liqueurs with the fruit that grows in the garden - often shared with guests!

Jan spends a lot of time tending the vegetable garden and feeding the chickens - and loves to take the children down at feeding time.

The whole property and village has a relaxed atmosphere and guests leave feeling like they've had a holiday to remember!

With three generations plus other family & friends here to celebrate my 60th birthday, we couldn’t have asked for a more charming venue. We have all enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, lovely pool (where 2 of our grandchildren learnt to swim), the playroom and the availability of our own ‘market garden’ which was a real bonus. The toddlers enjoyed the daily visit to the chickens and collecting the eggs. The facilities provided were amazing, you have thought of everything. The village bar/restaurant is a must and Le Minage at Ste. Hermine where we also enjoyed a great meal.

Relaxing birthday

We had booked La Maison well in advance for a birthday celebration and having read previous reviews were looking forward to our holiday. We were not to be disappointed.

A party of eight, we were greeted by Jan who gave is a tour of the property including the kitchen garden and the various fruit trees all of which we made full use of. The nectarines and mirabelles were particularly tasty. After the long drive we retired relatively early, sustained by the wine and provisions we had arranged with Jan. Sunday morning all up enjoying the sun around the pool, where we found ample chairs and loungers in addition to a couple of picnic tables. Sunday lunch was at the local restaurant which we had booked via Jan. Monday was the birthday and our hosts conjured up balloons and banners, then topped this of by baking a cake which made the day.

During the whole of the stay we wanted for nothing. Did I mention fresh eggs from the chickens? Everything you need is in the house. if you want peace and quiet you can lounge around the pool or the garden. If you feel more adventurous bikes are available and my wife and I went cycling for the first time in about forty years. If you have young children there is a play room with a whole array of games, books and dressing up clothes. An hours drive will find you at La Rochelle and the coast. For provisions there is a small local supermarket 5 minutes drive away which has a good selection but 15 minutes in the opposite direction there is a hyper-market with endless choice.

Mick and Jan organised a get together with our neighbours in the smaller property and we were all treated to Mick's homemade wines. All excellent though I particularly liked the walnut.

The house is spacious and we all felt the photos on the web did not really do it justice.

We had a wonderful holiday at La Maison en Pierre. We were a large family group covering a wide range of ages and every one of us had an amazing time. The house is immaculate and every need was catered for. We were especially appreciative of the fans in the bedrooms. The house has been lovingly and thoughtfully restored by the owners Jan and Mick and it feels like a home, not just a holiday house.

The large garden and swimming pool are also fantastic. Jan and Mick are the most welcoming owners ever and not only did they let us help ourselves to produce from their wonderful veggie plot as well as fresh eggs from the chickens, they even shared their homemade liqueurs.

I cannot rate this house and its lovely owners highly enough. We certainly hope to return.

Excellent property

We had an excellent stay at this property. It is very well equipped and the owners seemed to have thought of everything! The young children in the group loved collecting the eggs and fruit and veg from the garden. The pool was lovely and there was a large amount of pool toys/equipment available to use. The playroom in the courtyard was brilliant and the children loved it, there was plenty to keep them entertained and no need to take any toys from home. Would recommend to friends and family.

We stayed as three generations of the same family in La Maison en Pierre. The house was beautifully presented and brilliantly equipped - literally, everything had been thought of. We have a lot of experience of travelling in France and this property was definitely the best we have stayed in. The pool and grounds were fantastic. Jan and Mick are a lovely couple, so helpful, and it was such a bonus to be able to help ourselves to the fruit and veg growing in the garden. The kids all had a great time - the play room (and its contents!) was a massive hit, as were the "spare" bikes. Lots to do within an hour's drive of the house, and there is tonnes of tourist information in the house to help you decide what you'd like to do. Highly recommended.

We rented this property for our children and their young families and we were delighted at the wonderful facilities offered, Mick and Jan have thought of everything. The grounds are amazing, the chickens delighted the young ones collecting thee eggs daily and we were kept supplied on fresh fruit and veg from the garden, an added bonus! The swimming pool where two of our grandchildren learnt to swim was beautiful and to have their own version of Toys R Us in the playroom meant Mums and Dads had a little more peace. Wonderful!

A Very Comfortable House

A very comfortable house set in lovely grounds with a super pool. The house is exceptionally well equipped with plenty of space for everyone. Jan and Mick could not be more welcoming and helpful. Access to their vegetable patch and fruit trees was a real bonus - our kids had never dug up potatoes before! We would also highly recommend the bar/restaurant in the village 2 minutes walk away, properly French but with Guinness on tap!

St Juire Champgillon is only a 45 minute drive away from the many and varied beaches of the Southern Vendee. All beaches are safe for children, and many have life guards on duty throughout the summer months. Les Sables d'Olonne holds many surfing competitions, and Les Conches or La Terrière are great for body boarding. If you like to explore rock pools, then St Vincent is ideal, and then for just relaxing there is La Faute and La Tranche - with seaside towns nearby, with lots of entertainment.


La Maison en Pierre is situated in the Southern Vendée, close to the towns of Chantonnay, Luçon & Fontenay Le Comte and is easily accessed from the A83 motorway.

The house is within an hours’ drive of the airports at La Rochelle and Nantes and car hire is available at these airports.

The house is only 3 hours from the St Malo ferry port, 4.5h from Caen, 5h from Cherbourg and 6.5h from the Eurotunnel.

La Maison en Pierre Holiday Home is located in the village of St Juire Champgillon which has its own bar, well-known restaurant, hairdressers and weekly summer market. The main supermarkets and other shops are only a 5 minute drive away in Ste Hermine (bakeries, supermarket, banks, bars, weekly fruit & veg market and lots of summer fetes and festivals). Chantonnay is only 10 minutes away and here you will find 2 large supermarkets and many restaurants.

The house is only a 40 minute drive to the fantastic Puy du Fou Theme Park – with its spectacular evening Sound & Light show and its Gladiators, Vikings, Medieval Knights and Musketeers. Not to be missed!

La Rochelle and the Ile de Re are worth a visit – with an Aquarium, lots of harbour-side restaurants and market spilling out onto the streets.

For a quieter day out, there is the Marais Poitevin Regional Park – with miles of canals, ruined abbeys and great spots for watching the local birds and wildlife.

Luçon, with its 16th century cathedral and hidden Jardin Dumaine, is within a 20 minutes easy drive.

The renaissance town of Fontenay-Le-Comte offers guided tours around the Chateau de Terre Neuve and a lot more besides.

For a spot of wine-tasting, head of to the nearby town of Mareuil-sur-Lay which is at the start of the Fief Vendeen wine route.

Fishing is a popular sport in the Vendée and there are many lakes and rivers to choose from. If golf is your preferred sport, there a 5 golf courses in the region.
