Luxury (VB 4 Star-gold) Cottage-Apartment With Mountain Views

Overview

Property

Updated: 13-Nov-2016
Apartment in Hartsop, between Ambleside and Glenridding, Lake District, Cumbria, England - Historic Village In Fabulous Central Lake District Location With Many Walks From The Door

Willow Cottage is a ground floor, cottage-style apartment which oozes with character and contemporary country charm. Sensitively renovated to a high standard this generously appointed two-bedroom apartment in the historic village of Hartsop is a real gem. It is set in some of the best walking country in the National Park with walks both level and lofty accessible from the door. Just 10 minutes walk and you are on the shores of Brotherswater and a lovely evening walk around this small lake takes an hour with the temptation of a pub half way to quench the inevitable thirst! Just 3 miles away is Ullswater "England's most beautiful lake" where there are cruises from the pier at Glenridding. Hartsop itself is a wonderfully tranquil spot; seeped in history with many interesting stone properties. However it is just a 10 minute drive from the busy town of Ambleside with its range of shops, restaurants and an excellent independent cinema. The friendly yet discreet owners live above the apartment and are on hand to help with anything you need during your stay, whether it is advice on walks, places to visit or simply to order milk for you or explain how everything works (there is a comprehensive folder, but sometimes its nice to be able to ask.)

About the Owner

Richard and Helen moved to the Lake District from London over 10 years ago. Richard is an architect and Helen has a marketing background, but also is passionate about interior design. When not renovating or improving their properties Richard and Helen are keen fell walkers and have walked most of the Lake District fells and know the best local places to spy the wildlife. Both Richard and Helen are keen supporters of the local arts and this is in evidence in the cottage too.

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

We arrived a day late due to ill health of my husband but were warmly welcomed with flowers, a bottle of wine and milk in the fridge. Helen had also prepared the spare room for me at a late request to aid in sleeping with an ill husband.

The apartment is stunning, has all the amenities you will need and numerous walks either straight out of the door or within a short drive. Well stocked local shops are within a few miles and/or places to eat out also if you aren't wanting to cook.

Being with nature with such wonderful fresh air and stunning surrounds was a great tonic!

My only niggle was that I am annoyingly a light sleeper and once my husband was well enough we shared the main bedroom again, which was wonderfully comfortable and warm, however, it seems to be under the upstairs sitting room or kitchen so I was awake earlier than I may have done with the sound of foot fall above us. The bedroom windows give wonderful views but are also next to the path to this house so to change we had to keep closing the blinds. This is just me not being used to living at ground level with someone above.

None of this really affected the week, it meant I was up earlier than I would've been and so was able to admire the scenery for longer, whilst waiting for my husband to wake. We were also so very lucky with the weather as every day was good so we were able to do the walks or trips that we'd planned. Even woke up to snow one morning :-).

The apartment has so many lovely little touches like the bird feeder at the sitting room window. It was wonderful as a variety of small birds would visit throughout the day whilst we sat close by admiring them.

There is no network coverage for O2 there but there is working wifi if people feel the need to keep in touch with the outside world. But we enjoyed being away from it most of the time. It is a great place to base yourself and I would easily recommend it. A beautiful apartment and breath-taking surroundings.

Owner's Response: Thank you Jess for your lovely comments both here and in our visitor’s book. We were delighted that you enjoyed all our recent refurbishments, in particular all the bespoke woodwork and furnishings. You were only the second guest to see the new oak doors with handmade glass panels – so we were really pleased that you appreciated the work in these. It was no problem to set up the second bedroom for your husband, we are on hand and as you discovered this has the benefit that we can help guests with any request, even during their stay. We would have happily shown you how to set the blind so that you can see out, but that when we occasionally pass by, that your privacy is protected – these oak slatted blinds were chosen with guest privacy in mind. This is important to us. For guests reading the review all mobile networks can be obtained within a short drive, and if you are on Vodafone, you can pick up a signal within a 5 minute walk or we can connect your mobile via the wifi system. We have a Vodafone pay as you go mobile available upon request for a small extra charge. Our landline is also available for emergencies. We have discovered that many guests, like Jess, really enjoy the opportunity to be “disconnected” for a while – Hartsop is a magical place and tempts you into slow!

Can't fault the cottage or location

  • 5 of 5

I had a wonderful week in Hartsop. The cottage was finished to a very high standard throughout with many additional comforts thrown in. The cottage was warm and comfortable even in January and there are many great walks right from the cottage door. The location is quiet and secluded - ideal if you like to get away from the crowds.

Location

From the Owner

We bought Grove Barn and Willow Cottage originally with a ten year plan to move here permanently, however with its the beautiful location, stunning views and even its own lake on the Doorstep, Hartsop became impossible to leave. So we have left the rat race far behind to build a life in this gorgeous spot. What makes it special is the away from it all feel, but there is so much more to explore in the area from Beatrix Potter's cottage to the shifting sands of Morecombe Bay with fantastic birdlife. Plus for art lovers the Abbott Hall in Kendal and Blackwell near Windermere have ever changing exhibitions. I think it is this rich tapestry of the area's history which has captivated us most....well that and the discovery of yet another surprising view from the top of a newly conquered fell.
