Built in 1847, The Old School is a beautiful 4 bedroom Grade II listed country house in the village of Icklesham which was completely renovated to a high standard in 2011. A stunning high-end interior designed house (featured in September's 2012's Edition of Ideal Homes Magazine) that has everything you want for a fantastic holiday, providing a relaxing environment to unwind, especially well-equipped for families with children. Outside, it has a lovely fully enclosed lawned garden with a summer house, equipped with its own bar and a large patio area. Located in the pretty rural surroundings of the Brede Valley, in-between the historic towns of Rye & Hasting, it is also within easy reach of Camber Beach and Battle, so you can enjoy both country and coastal life at The Old School. There's lots to do for all ages in the area - walking, golf, cycling, watersports, kite-surfing, shopping, eating great food, visiting historic castles, art galleries or public gardens to name a few.

About Lucy Krigstein

I live in London, England with my husband, daughter and son. We both work in London but bought The Old School in 2010 as we wanted to spend weekends out of the city and enjoy the English countryside at its best. We love the house and buying in the beautiful area of Icklesham, on the Brede Valley, with the beach a short distance away, was the best decision we ever made for us and our children. We both love travelling and are lucky enough to have visited many far flung countries and have brought pieces of furniture back with us from our travels which we've used to decorate the house. Our favourite past times are cooking, socialising with friends, playing and watching sports and skiing.

Why Lucy Krigstein chose Rother

We bought The Old School after falling in love with the area. We wanted a house with lots of character in a village with a great pub, close to the beach and beautiful country walks. Icklesham gave us all of that -its on the edge of the stunning Brede Valley with plenty of walking and cycling routes and we have the award-winning, family-friendly Queen's Head pub a few minutes walk away with wonderful staff and food. The picturesque towns of Winchelsea and Rye are close-by and there is lots to do in the area for all ages, whatever the weather.

Being close to Camber Beach is heaven in the summer time although we can enjoy blustering walks all through the winter too. The location is easy to get to from London via road or train.

Overall, we love the area!

What makes this house unique

The Old School, dating from 1845, is a unique property with great open plan, double height ceiling space in the living area and cosy bedrooms. We've completely refurbished it inside whilst retaining the important period features such as the huge fireplace.

It's perfect for families too with the large self-contained garden making is safe for kids to run around in. We've tried to supply all the practical and fun things you need when holidaying with children.

If you love good food, there are numerous fantastic restaurants in the area and the beaches of Camber and Winchelsea are a short drive away for all the beach-lovers. If you like an active holiday, there are so many options available from watersports, golf, tennis to bowling to name a few. There really is something for everyone!

Notes on accommodation: The house has free WiFi available and a landline telephone to receive incoming calls. We've tried to provide everything you need for families with small children. We can also baby-proof the house to include stair gates and safety plug socket protectors. Let us know what you need as we can provide 2 highchairs, baby cutlery and tableware, 6 bottle steriliser, food processor for making baby food, 2 travel cots and 1 Moses basket with bedding, baby monitor, baby bath seat, Flexi-Bath and Aquapod bath seat and mat and plastic toddler steps to reach the sink. McClaren Techno XLR buggy, baby gym, Baby rocker, Baby Activity Station, Leapfrog Learn & Groove Musical Table, V-Tech Push-Walker, alphabet rubber baby play floor mats. There are jigsaw puzzles, children’s books, toys, DVDs and plenty of games for the garden. Outside: The property has a large, self-contained back garden which is fenced in and has a lockable garden gate making it safe for children from the main road. There is a large patio area with a gas barbecue and a dining table with 8 outdoor chairs and cushions. Additional outdoor seating is provided via 2 deck chairs and you can take our 8 indoor dining room chairs outside too during the day as they are wicker if needed. We have a large summer house at the end of the garden fitted with a fully functioning bar with bar stools, fridge and electricity. Kids and men alike seem to love this feature of the house! A variety of outdoor games including jenga, boules, skittles, badminton, Swingball and rounders are available to be played on the lawn area. At the back of our house is a public Sports Ground with a playground with swings, climbing frames etc to use too. Utility Room: Butler's sink, washing machine, tumble dryer, iron & ironing board, hoover, brooms, dustpan & brush - all necessary cleaning equipment provided - cleaning before and after your visit is included - additional cleaning available upon request. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: 100% cotton bed linen, fluffy large bath and hand towels and beach towels are provided. The property, linen and towels will be cleaned on a weekly basis and before and after your stay - additional cleaning services can be provided upon request.

Amazing property

We had amazing weekend with oour family for my husband 60th birthday. The house is amazing has all you require in it. We would recommend you stay at the house for a holiday.

Spacious, well equipped home

We had a lovely long weekend break at the Old School House. We were a mixed age family group staying with one baby and a 3 year old. We found the house to be very well equipped for kids, we didn't need to touch any of the toys we brought as there were so many for my son and daughter to choose from! Nice to have such a large communal living area - many houses don't have living accommodation that can actually fit everyone who is staying. I would recommend the Old School House to friends looking to stay in the area.

Spacious home from home

The House is large enough to have Social gatherings with personal space when required. We stayed for 2 nights (4 Mums & 6 Kids) It is extremely well equipped, feels like you're staying at your best friends House. Everything is catered for. I've lost count of booking a Holiday home for 10 and finding there's only enough room on The Sofa for 4. This is so far removed from that. Decorated to a high standard without feeling precious. Kids have everything they need or want from Buggies, Highchairs, Toys to Garden fun. The Sleeping Pods for them were very popular. The Pub across The road serves delicious honest Pub Food (child friendly) Lots of great days out locally. The Master Bedroom doesn't have Curtains or blinds. Not a problem for us as eye masks were provided. I contacted the owner before arrival and she was most accommodating. A really special House which we will return too.

Lovely property, perfect for family get together

We were a party of 12 with children ranging in ages from 1-15 and we were perfectly accommodated and very comfortable in The School House. The house was well presented and the thought and attention given to children's facilities was fantastic. We had everything we needed for a great weekend away to celebrate a special birthday. Contact with the owner was good and all queries were answered well with great suggestions provided for places to visit and how we could make best use of the space.

We all really enjoyed our stay and would love to return in the summer months to enjoy the fabulous garden. The house is really well suited to family groups with very nice rooms all of a good size with amazingly comfortable beds! Thank you to Lucy for enabling us to have a special family break in your lovely house.

Changeover Day:
The preferred changeover day is Friday but this is flexible depending on lettings.

Check-in is at 2 pm and check-out is at 10.30 am. We can occasionally accommodate alternative times – please contact us with your request.

40% of the booking fee is payable to secure your booking. The remaining 60% is payable 2 weeks before the arrival date plus the £300 refundable deposit. Cancellation policy applies.
