About George Lane

My name is George and I work as a PE and Maths teacher, and coach a number of sports to youngsters. I've been married to Joss for a little over 4 years now and in that time we've had two boys - Freddie (2)and William (1 month).

George Lane purchased this cottage in 2008

Why George Lane chose Appledore

I've always loved North Devon, and used to visit the area with my parents and two brothers every year when we were growing up. Joss and I continued coming on holiday here when we got married, and 4 years ago, when we were looking to get on the property ladder, we decided to buy this property. Working and living in an independent boarding school can be pretty demanding for us all during term time, and Appledore represents the perfect place for us to escape to and relax. It is easily accessible (2.5hrs) from where we live, and we also love the thought of other people being able to enjoys this terrific part of the country when we are unable to be down there.

What makes this cottage unique

Appledore and it's surrounding area has everything that you could wish for a holiday, whether it be for a quiet get-away or an action packed family beach holiday (or even a bit of both!). As soon as we get down to the area we automatically feel relaxed and on holiday, and when we're not in Appledore, we're constantly looking forward to our next visit. We're very proud of our traditional fisherman's cottage, and hope that you love it as much as we do. Do feel free to contact us by email on gdml@marlboroughcollege.org or by phone on 07812635678 should you have any questions.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"As soon as we walked into the cottage after picking up the key we thought 'what a lovely cottage!' It's tastefully decorated and just so homely in a beautiful part of Devon. Even though it rained at the beginning and end of the holiday, it's a lovely part of the country that we had not discovered before and it's great to be in such a friendly village. Thanks to the owners - you've made our holiday stay very welcome and relaxing - everything in the house supplied made it great and we loved being able to sit in the courtyard and enjoy a drink or breakfast. Would love to visit again." (Louise, Steve, Melanie and Tasha from Radcliffe near Manchester, July 2012)

Quirky old Devon cottage

  • 4 of 5

We loved Appledore and the surrounding area. The property was in a good location but unfortunately looking a little tired. It would appear that the cottage is very popular and suspect that it only gets a cursory clean between lettings. We felt that the kitchen could do with deep cleaning as this was very grubby and everything felt greasy. No doubt the owners aren't aware of the current cleanliness and would urge them to pay a visit to view for themselves. We would happily re-book with the owners providing we knew that the house-keeping had been attended too.

Ideal holiday cottage in beautiful village.

  • 4 of 5

Ideal holiday cottage, plenty of character being an old fisherman's cottage but with all home comforts and amenities. Fantastic location few minutes walk into Appledore, a beautiful village and also easy further wallks to beaches and countryside. Thoroughly enjoyed short family break here with the dog and wouldn't hesitate to return.

A traditional cottage

  • 4 of 5

Despite the weather, we thoroughly enjoyed out stay at Shipwrights. Just a stones throw from the waters edge and in very close proximity to the recommended Beaver pub, the cottage offered us a comfortable stay through warmth, cleanliness and fun. Thank you.

Comfortable cottage in the centre of the village.

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay in the cottage It had everything you needed for a good self catering holiday . It was so close to all the pubs and they were all dog friendly, there was always something going on in the pubs every night. The live music was great.

Appledore was very lovely and friendly place and we would definately look to return again soon.

Westward Ho! beach is under two miles away and other surf beaches such as Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe are no more than 30 minutes’ drive.

The ancient market towns of Bideford (5mins) and Barnstaple (15 mins) are within close proximity providing a range of shopping and other amenities.

Further Details:

Appledore has a rich maritime heritage mainly through its links to the shipbuilding yard which was founded in 1855 and remains one of the area’s largest employers today. Tales of seafaring deeds and smugglers’ exploits abound – harking back to the village’s history as an important trade link when ships used to bring tobacco and spices from abroad. Its maze of narrow streets, which appear in a striking kaleidoscope of pastel colours, leads to the quay which is central to life in this fishing community. Here, among the activities on offer are fishing trips, crabbing contests and ferry trips to Instow on the opposite side of the estuary. The village boasts a thriving arts and crafts industry, and there are numerous galleries and shops to explore in the back streets and along the quayside. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs to choose from which offer fresh fish and fine local ales as well as a variety of music entertainment on certain evenings. The Beaver Inn and the Royal George in particular, both a stone’s throw from the cottage, have excellent menus and stunning estuary views. Sylvester’s is the award-winning local chippy on Meeting Street and people can buy quality fish and chips before sitting out on the quay front and watching the ships sail by as they tuck in.

Other nearby attractions include the steep cobbled village of Clovelly, and the Tarka Trail, a cycling and nature route skirting the coast in either direction punctuated with places to stop for refreshment. There are also many fun days out for young families at places such as The Big Sheep animal centre and The Milky Way adventure theme park. Or if you fancy venturing a little further afield you could try the Exmoor Zoo – home of the “Exmoor Beast”!
