About the Owner

I've owned and managed Curlew Cottage for nearly twenty five years, with the help of a local caretaker, and have enjoyed getting to know regular visitors and Appledore village life. I moved to Yorkshire from London ten years ago and always love visiting Curlew Cottage and Appledore.

Guestbook comments from the owner

I just wanted to let you know that I had the best little holiday in your cottage.

It is set up perfectly. The bed was comfy, the house was cosy and I felt safe and warm and happy. There are lovely touches everywhere . . I will recommend it to all I know (and even the odd stranger), and will be in touch about another booking for later this year. (Anna, December 2014)

We had a lovely quiet couple of days. The cottage was spotless and very nicely presented . . we spent a fair amount of time curled up in front of the fire, but with the lovely view as well. We slept well and enjoyed our meals at the Beaver.

All in all, top marks and nothing lacking. (Helen, March 2015)

Curlew Cottage was very comfortable and charming. ..... it was nice to see those lovely wooden cupboard doors in the living room when we entered the property. Very striking and they set the tone for the property. It was great that all the ‘mod cons’ are in perfect working order in the bathroom and kitchen (great shower by the way). Having the washing machine in the utility room outside was handy, as it kept the washing out of the way and was a good place for hanging and drying stuff. The garden is lovely as well and the table and chairs are very sturdy... having properly maintained kitchen and bathroom fittings was a pleasure. Having two sets of front door keys was very handy as well. So was the procedure of getting the keys on arrival as it means you don’t have to warn a key holder if your arrival is delayed.

As for kitchen equipment, ... I was delighted that everything that I needed to cook in the kitchen was provided. (Elaine, July 2012)

We loved it. 3 generations and a dog. The cottage accommodated very well. Not too precious, but very nice and lovely personality. Gorgeous views and safe for the children. Loved it and will return.

Fantastic views and a great base

  • 5 of 5

It is the location that makes Curlew Cottage so special. The garden wall overlooks the Taw estuary, and the water comes right up to the wall at high tide. You can sit for hours watching the scene in front of you: the tide coming in and then receding to reveal huge sandbanks, the plethora of birds including oystercatchers and curlews, and all the human activity of yachts and gigs and fishing boats. The sunsets are spectacular too, with the sun sinking over Lundy in the distance and Northam Burrows in the foreground.

Curlew Cottage itself is very comfortable, with a snug kitchen on the ground floor with a dining table by the window, looking out onto the garden and river. Don’t expect gleaming modern appliances and furnishings here; the décor and features are traditional in style. There’s a lounge upstairs to take advantage of the view, so that one of the bedrooms is downstairs. The first floor has a further double bedroom and a single. The only bathroom is downstairs at the end of the kitchen; not a problem for us, but be aware of it. There is currently no wi-fi in the cottage, although I believe this is going to be installed. No parking in Irsha Street, but there’s a nearby car park where a week-long ticket can be bought.

The cottage is also well-situated on the edge of Appledore, with a flat few-minute walk to the lovely quayside which has a food shop, restaurants and other amenities. Appledore is a lovely old fishing village, and less crowded than many resorts as it’s less well known. Altogether a wonderful place for a holiday, and a great base for exploring North Devon. A stay in Curlew Cottage is now an annual event for us.

Charming property in a great location

  • 5 of 5

This spacious cottage has bags of character and is well equipped and beautifully presented. It is a short walk into the town centre through picturesque streets and there are lovely estuary views from the cottage. We had some excellent meals at the nearby pub and spent time wandering in the town and along the shore. The only slight issue was the lack of parking at the cottage but we didn't have any problems finding parking though we had to pay. Overall, this is highly recommended.
