In a beautiful location on the waterfront in Appledore with stunning views, Curlew Cottage is a characterful self- catering cottage sleeping five in three bedrooms, with an additional single folding bed available. Spacious, well equipped and comfortable, Curlew Cottage welcomes a high proportion of regular visitors. On the shoreline of the Taw and Torridge estuary, Curlew Cottage offers a perfect view of spectacular sunsets, bird life, and a great variety of water craft. A small walled garden with lighting, table and chairs overlooks the water and the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows and Northam Burrows. A short walk from the centre of Appledore, three miles from Bideford and a good walk or a short drive of the glorious beach at Westward Ho! Two lounges, two dining areas, two TVs, WiFi and a bathroom and bedroom on the ground floor make it suitable for a range of family groups.

Outside: A walled courtyard garden looks over the estuary. There is patio lighting and a table and chairs. Young children should be supervised in the garden as there is a drop beyond the garden wall down to the waterfront. Utility Room: Washing machine, second WC, clothes line Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Linen is included but not towels or tea towels except by arrangement. The cottage is cleaned on departure and an additional clean and a change of linen are provided during a two week booking.

We stayed here for 3 nights over half term and absolutely loved it. Appledore is a great place with lots of lovely pubs and shops to visit. We will definitely come back x

Lovely Cottage

This cottage was clean and very comfortable. It was more spacious than we expected and slept six comfortably with one member on a camp bed in the second living room. The cottage had a lovely view of the estuary from the upstairs living room. Appledore is a lovely fishing village with plenty of good places to eat. We parked our car in Churchfields car park less than a five minute from the cottage.

The only reason I gave this cottage four stars instead of five is because the younger members of our party would have liked wi fi.

A lovely Easter break for three generations

We had a lovely stay in Appledore for an early Easter break along with granny visiting from America and two young children aged 3 and 6. Curlew Cottage was surprisingly spacious for us all and we had more than enough room to play/read/cook for the five of us. The views are lovely and the location could not be better. The owner and caretaker were both extremely helpful and accommodating. A great find - thank you.

Couldn't fault the cottage at all, Had a wonderful weekend here the cottage was very warm and cosy , very comfortable beds , and outstanding views from the upstairs sitting room of the estuary.We would recommend this cottage to anyone and being as it was dog friendly was an added bonus to us absolutely loved it.

I've owned and managed Curlew Cottage for over twenty five years, with the help of a local caretaker, and have enjoyed getting to know regular visitors and Appledore village life. I moved to Yorkshire from London twelve years ago and always love visiting Curlew Cottage and Appledore.

Why Stephanie Blythe chose Torridge District

The light reflecting from the sea in Appledore makes everything look beautiful. Add the views and the character of the old fishing village, and that would be reason enough to stay in a cottage here! Curlew Cottage is an 18th century fisherman's cottage with great character and interesting interior. Appledore is very favourably placed in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a Marine Nature Reserve. Curlew Cottage is on the South West Coast Path. There is an abundant choice of coastal villages and countryside to visit, as well as National Trust properties, a golf course, lifeboat station, Lundy island, and local towns like Bideford with their range of useful shops and facilities and charm. Appledore has shops, a bus service and a great choice of places to eat and drink.

What makes this cottage unique

Whatever the weather you will have a fantastic view over the water from the garden, kitchen and upstairs lounge with all sorts of boats and water craft, the gulls and the sunsets, from the windows or the garden. Curlew Cottage cottage has a well equipped kitchen if you plan to eat in, and a short walk away you'll find two pubs with restaurants and a little further, the quay and local shops. Local musicians entertain in many of the Appledore pubs. You can walk or take a short drive to one of the best beaches in Devon at Westward Ho! and Northam. Fishing and boat trips are available from the quay and children enjoy using crab lines and exploring the rock pools. You can even buy local fish as it lands. Appledore has a strong artistic tradition and has a regular visual arts festival and a book festival.

I just wanted to let you know that I had the best little holiday in your cottage.

It is set up perfectly. The bed was comfy, the house was cosy and I felt safe and warm and happy. There are lovely touches everywhere . . I will recommend it to all I know (and even the odd stranger), and will be in touch about another booking for later this year. (Anna, December 2014)

We had a lovely quiet couple of days. The cottage was spotless and very nicely presented . . we spent a fair amount of time curled up in front of the fire, but with the lovely view as well. We slept well and enjoyed our meals at the Beaver.

Curlew Cottage was very comfortable and charming. ..... it was nice to see those lovely wooden cupboard doors in the living room when we entered the property. Very striking and they set the tone for the property. It was great that all the ‘mod cons’ are in perfect working order in the bathroom and kitchen (great shower by the way). Having the washing machine in the utility room outside was handy, as it kept the washing out of the way and was a good place for hanging and drying stuff. The garden is lovely as well and the table and chairs are very sturdy... having properly maintained kitchen and bathroom fittings was a pleasure. Having two sets of front door keys was very handy as well. So was the procedure of getting the keys on arrival as it means you don’t have to warn a key holder if your arrival is delayed.

As for kitchen equipment, ... I was delighted that everything that I needed to cook in the kitchen was provided. (Elaine, July 2012)

The cottage is right on the coastline overlooking the water, and a there is a slipway down to the sand and rock pools on the shore a hundred yards away.

Curlew Cottage is on the South West Coast Path and you can walk to Westward Ho!, which is about ten minutes by car. The beach at Instow is also a short drive away.


Exeter or Bristol are the nearest airports. Both are about two hours away by car. It is advisable to have the use of a car on holiday in this area.


Curlew Cottage is on the outskirts of the village of Appledore and ten minutes walk from the centre. It is three miles from the nearest town (Bideford) and half an hour's drive from the Hartland peninsula. Barnstaple is half an hour's drive away.

Further Details:

Appledore has a good range of cafes, local pubs and restaurants - most have WIFI - and some useful shops. Three miles away, Bideford has supermarkets, banks, and a range of high street shops and antique shops. From Bideford you can take a ferry to Lundy island.

When you book a break of between 4 and 6 days, the 4th, 5th and 6th days will be reduced to half the night rate.
