18th century detached cottage in Wirksworth, Peak District - Stunning Views Over The Rooftops And Surrounding Countryside

A gorgeous detached cottage set in a stunning location high above the rooftops and historic buildings of Wirksworth. The cottage has been lovingly restored to the very highest standards. The area around the Wee House has the feel of a Cornish fishing village – a random patchwork of houses and gardens removed from traffic and noise. The Wee House is peaceful, quiet and has an ‘away from it all’ feel – yet it is only a short amble down the hill to the quirky boutique shops and independent eateries below. Great for a relaxing break away or an ideal place to set off on adventures in the surrounding Peaks – you can walk and cycle from the door.

-Changeover days are Fridays AND Mondays. In low season we will start on other days where possible. We welcome 2 night stays in low season - please enquire for a price.

Downstairs the high quality finish is warm, inviting and snug; whilst upstairs has a luxurious feel which is open, light and calming. (click 'more details' for further information)

Original features abound – twisty oak beams, a gritstone hearth and deep recessed windows. These are complimented by solid oak floorboards, a fantastic wood burning stove and handmade wooden shutters. Fabulous finishing and touches throughout.

About sarah cumberland

Hello - we are Sarah and Mal and we live down the hill and round the corner from the Wee House on the Hill.

sarah cumberland purchased this cottage in 2012

Why sarah cumberland chose Wirksworth

We were regular visitors to the Peak District and moved to Wirksworth in 1998 because it gave us all we wanted - beautiful walking and cycling country and an open and friendly community - it is a vibrant town with local shops and a thriving creative community full of designers, artists, musicians and sculptors. Wirksworth has a quaint village feel but with the benefits of all the amenities of a small town (restaurants, cafes, pubs etc). We lived in the Wee House as a rental property when we first moved to Wirksworth and fell in love with the cottage. When it came up for sale we saw it as an opportunity to lovingly improve it, and turn it into one of the best and most enjoyed holiday cottages in Derbyshire.

What makes this cottage unique

The 'Wee House' is stylish, comfortable and extremely well appointed with stunning views from both the cottage and garden. It is a 'top spot' literally and also because of its proximity to Peak District attractions. This quaint miners cottage has many original features, oak beams, and floorboards, gritstone fireplace with log burner. The cottage is a mix of traditional and contemporary. Downstairs offers comfort and warmth whilst upstairs offers a french boutique feel which is light, spacious and peaceful. The area surrounding the 'wee house' dates back to the 17th century and is called the 'puzzle gardens' due to the random layout of cottages and pathways which gives it a similar feel to a cornish fishing village.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"love it, love it, love it" - The wee-house is the perfect combination of calm, cosy and stylish. It is in a wonderful spot that allows you to feel tucked away from it all, able to relax and unwind yet with walks and amenities right nearby. Your attention to every detail and comfort means it's a luxurious treat to stay here. (D Taylor - Yorkshire)

The cottage was perfect in every way, down to the smallest detail. We couldn't have asked for a lovelier welcome and had fantastic recommendations on places to visit. To sum it up, breathtaking views & beautiful cottage = a very well rested couple from Essex. We will be back. (Joe and Claire -Essex)

'Wow' and 'oh my God' what a fantastic little hidden cottage. Superb decor throughout. We could not wish for a better and more comfortable place to stay. (Helen & Darren -Oxford)

'What a fantastic hidden gem'. The cottage is beautiful, the views are stunning - 'a home away from home'. We highly recommend (Natasha & Simon- London)

Notes on accommodation: This stylish hideaway is literally only 1½ mins away from fantastic independent cafes and artisan shops. All you need is on your doorstep - second hand book stores, tantalising cafes, antique shops and great restaurants. The stunning vistas make the setting of the Wee House an ideal escape from everyday life. The maze of pathways around this historic area, developed in the era before cars, mean there is no parking beside the cottage – but this makes it wonderfully quiet! A short 1 minute walk takes you to your car. There is easy access to the Peak - explore straight from your door. Why not hire bikes and cycle one of the fabulous local trails - Monsal Dale, Tissington or the High Peak Trail. Soak up Chatsworth Estate, Haddon Hall and many more. Why not enjoy a night at the independent Northern Lights cinema (3 minutes away – we’ve timed it) with pre film tapas and wine – cosy up on the funky sofas and relax! Outside: Two sunny patios allow you to soak up the ‘stand and stare’ views across the town and down the valley. There is a steeply sloping garden with love seats in the wall. A cute little barbie is available for those alfresco moments as you chill out and soak up the vistas. You can lock your bikes safely is the secure storage outside the front door. It’s also handy for drying wet kit, or storing muddy boots. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: The Wee House is spotlessly clean and is maintained to the highest standards. Guests love the fresh and crisp ironed cotton sheets and fluffy towels. The pillows and duvets are feather, synthetic are available on request. Other: The thermostatically controlled gas central heating allows you complete control of your ideal temperature in the house – it also provides hot water on demand.

Beautiful, cosy, warm, very well maintained, welcoming

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful, cosy cottage stocked with all we could have needed. We were welcomed by our lovely hostess with a bottle for that evening, tea and coffee, chocolate biscuits and a pint of milk. Every detail had been considered, plenty of help and detail about the local area was on hand, the cottage was cosy, comfy, complete with log burner, tv, dvd, radio an a bookshelf. We felt completely at home and wanted for nothing. Wirksworth is a lovely town, incredibly welcoming and when the mist lifts a very pretty location too. We will most certainly be back!

Beautiful house.

  • 5 of 5

The Wee House On The Hill is a beautiful homely place with lots of original features. The view is stunning. The home is equipped with everything you need and thank you for the welcome goodies. Sarah and Mal were away when we arrived but Martin took great care of us helping with the bags and showing us to the house. There is an information book about the house with everything you need to know about the household appliances etc. It also contains a history of the house which is very interesting. There are loads of information leaflets to help you plan you stay. The local people we met were extremely friendly and while having an afternoon pint in the Blacks Head were treated to even more history. They also suggested places we could visit or walks to go on. We only ate out once at Le Mistral and the food was lovely. There are plenty of grocery shops so we cooked in the house getting steaks from the local butcher which were superb. There are a few cafes but we didn't try any preferring instead to sample real ales. If that takes your fancy 3 places we liked were the Blacks Head (already mentioned), The Royal Oak (although they have limited opening hours) and The Feather Star. We did 3 walks while we were there taking in spectacular views from the high peak trail. We also took the bus to Matlock Bath and Cromford. The bus service was really good and if we had enough time would have used it more. When we set off on our last walk we by chance bumped into Mal who was coming to see if we were ok. So from booking the holiday to leaving the attention to detail to make our stay comfortable has been exceptional. Well done Sarah, Mal and Martin. This kind of care and service is how you get repeat visitors and we plan to visit again.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your fabulous review. We love the Wee House and Wirksworth and it is our pleasure to make the cottage as good as it can be and help guests enjoy all that Wirksworth and Derbyshire has to offer. Your top tips are great and I totally agree that Wirksworth is very well located for buses to access all parts of the Peak District - it's easy to park up and walk, bus or cycle instead of using the car. We very much look forward to seeing you again soon. Sarah nad Mal

Perfect cottage in a perfect setting ...what more could you ask for!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! This is such a little gem! Positioned at the top of a hill with car parking below, this beautiful cottage must have one of the best views in Wirksworth!

It is very well cared for by Sarah and Mal and so well equipped too. I cant think of anything that has not been included for a relaxing stay ... we even discovered it has umbrellas and walking poles for guests to use, although we had brought our own!

It is a perfect base for exploring the area ... so much to see and so little time!

Sarah has included a very detailed guide to the cottage too which also includes how both her and Mal with a lot of hard work, brought it back to life!

Breakfast on the south facing "side patio" with stunning views over the village and The Dales is a must in the mornings, before heading off for the days adventures.

We only managed to fit in a short stay but in that time we climbed Mam Tor and continued on to Barker Bank, completing a circular walk by The National Trust. A very interesting trip to Poole's Cavern after which we then started the "Blue Route" walk through Grinlow Wood,

getting slightly lost and extending our walk, but picked up the "green route" and made it back with no problems. All added to the fun!

Crompton Canal is a place to visit for a leisurely walk. Unfortunately it was too early in the season for the barges to be out on the water. We walked down to the High Peak Junction where we came across an old wooden railway carriage at the end.

Each day it was lovely upon our return back to the cottage, to light the stove and sink into the comfy sofa, before falling asleep in the most comfortable bed ....i wish i could have brought it back with me!!

Wirksworth itself is a lovely village and the locals so welcoming. Try the local fish and chip shop .. tasty large pieces of white fish and golden chips. Coffee and a light bite in Coffee Drop, (excellent) and the icing on the cake for us was the fantastic micro pub, The Feather Star. Such a warm/welcoming atmosphere, well supported by locals, and craft/real ales.

We could not have enjoyed our stay any more if we tried and look forwards to returning again sometime.

Beautiful little getaway

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved our three nights at the Wee House. The cottage is beautifully decorated, making it feel rustic yet modern. The whole property was immaculately clean. All of the cupboards and drawers were stocked with all the utensils you should need. The bed was very comfy and the bathroom was lovely with both a waterfall shower head and a handheld one. Sarah was brilliantly helpful from the moment we made the booking, even taking a call from me to ask about how best to operate the fire. There was nothing else we needed to make our stay better and hopefully we’ll be back in the future.
