About the Owner

Bucks Mills was one of our favourite villages and beaches and we were very excited when we saw that most of the village cottages were being sold to pay death duties. We bought the cottage when it was auctioned and used it for family and friends, we now also let it but it is still used by our family and grandchildren.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very good time in Bucks Mills. Cute house, beautiful coast, friendly neighbours. Happily the car was ready in time so we could go home without difficulties.

I'm sure we will come back one day!

Here I sent you some pictures of our holidays in Bucks Mills.

Charming cottage in beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

Spent 3 nights in number 5 over New Year - you could not ask for a more idyllic Devon hamlet than Bucks Mills. An abundance of stunning walks along the coast and inland in the forest. The cottage is charming and well kept with all necessaries in the kitchen, in a clean state and with comfortable beds. Despite visiting in December / Jan we were warm throughout, the night storage heaters are obviously in good nick. Highly recommended, we hope to return soon!

Picturesque cottage

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend at this gorgeous cottage. We have a young child who loved the cottage and the surrounding walks. The village is down a winding road through a lovely forest and close to the Beach. Very picturesque, we had a lovely stay. The cottage was very cosy with comfy beds. We are planning to return next year for a longer stay.

Idyllic hideaway

  • 5 of 5

It was a wonderful surprise to drive off the bleak north Devon road and discover this idyllic valley, lush with trees and spring flowers. The cottage is simply decorated and quite small, but has everything you need for a holiday visit. There's a stream at the bottom of the garden, and the only other sound you'll hear most of the time is birdsong. A lovely place to retreat.

Peaceful retreat in glorious Devon

  • 5 of 5

Everything about our week except the weather was wonderful! The cottage is a delight and we did many local visits - could easily have filled a second week. The holiday was very carefully planned to be in Bucks Mills, the village where my ancestors lived and worked. I discovered some remarkable history from the village church and that my gt gt uncle lived in No. 5 Bucks Mills. It was a special time.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. Glad you enjoyed your stay and your research was successful. We believe that the cottage was built around 1800 so it was interesting to hear that your grt, grt. uncle lived there in 1830.

Bucks Mills cottage

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little Fisherman's cottage situated in a small white-washed village in Clovelly-style within close distance to the sea. The cottage has a delightful garden with a small stream at the end of it. TIt is in a very peaceful setting and perfect for stargazing at night time.

It contains everything you could possibly need, and what I loved was the electric shower in the bathroom... great after a busy day exploring beautiful Devon.

The owners are great to deal with and are quick to respond to any queries one might have.

Thank you for our lovely week in your cottage!

Further Details:

The village has an interesting history, at one time most of the inhabitants were called Braund, rumour has it that they were descendants from a Spanish survivor from the Spanish Armada and the cottages were build from wreakage from Armada ships. When we first went to Bucks Mills there were three Braunds still living there, Noel, Stella and Grenville who ran the village shop with his wife Edith. Sadly they have all left and the shop is closed. Many Braunds lived in our cottage, the last one being Matilda who lived there from 1930 - 1972 with her husband who was a chaffeur. Noel told us that one family who lived in our cottage had nine children!

There is a thriving Braund Society (www.braundsociety.org) and Braunds and their descendents all over world keep in touch. They have an annual reunion with various events including dressing in period clothing. One year a victorian village school was set up on our lawn complete with 'victorian' children.

The North Devon Coastpath crosses the village, so it's possible to walk it in both direction. The village of Clovelly one way or through woods and fields to Peppercombe in the other directions. There are other delightful footpaths in all directions from the village.

There is a shop in the next village for papers, pasties and some groceries about 1 mile away, but all major supermarkets will deliver online orders. Bideford is 9 miles away and has two supermarkets, many restaurants, Atlantic Village (outlet shopping).

Available to rent for holidays from £235 per week. The cottage is also available for short breaks out of season and at short notice, from £70 per night, min two nights (price for cottage not per person) - this price includes heating and electricity.

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: We have owned the cottage since 1982. When our children were young we used to often stay at a pub in Iddlesleigh and Bucks Mills and the beach was our favorite place to visit. We were surprised and delighted on one of our visit to find most of the cottages in the village were for sale. They were being sold to pay death duties for the Pine-coffin family. My wife went to the auction and managed to buy the cottage we wanted. We used it ourselves and lent to friends but when the children were older we decided to let it. We still go as often as possible and our son and family now take their children. We have tried not to change the cottage and it still has its original character. We have stayed in many self catering cottages and we try to provide everything you need for a super holiday in our cottage. We are lucky to have super neighbours living next door who know the local area very well and are pleased to give advice if you need it. Sorry but we no longer accept pets Outside: Own private garden with picnic table and benches. Few minutes walk down lane to beach (no through road). Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: Towels and linen are not included in rent but can be hired (£40 pw) and beds will be 'made up' for when you arrive. Property is cleaned and inspected after every let but we expect you to leave it as you found it. Electricity is included on rent. Other: Own private garden, parking in no through road outside cottage
