About the Owner

Annie. We have been at Gara Mill for ten years, having dreamt of bringing our children here to grow up paddling in the stream. We have loved the freedom that we all have to explore here. We have endeavoured to create a place where anyone wanting to enjoy nature and the outdoors, can come to take it in (be active or relax); it is cool to camp but we want to be warm and dry while we do it. We have tried to establish a place where we can all be outside, with BBQ area and Nature Trail, perhaps gather some hens eggs for breakfast - generally get a sense of being on an camping holiday but without the downside of leaky tents, in a damp climate. We have excellent beds, lovely bedding and have included touches of design inspired by our location and great Scandinavian design!

Just what we needed

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely few days at Gara Mill. We were a party of 6 ranging from 9-80 and the accommodation suited all. The location is ideal with lots to do within a relatively short drive. We moved our eldest son into digs at Plymouth Uni and booked a short break with family while we did this. A big thank you to Annie for helping us by providing a cold box to move the rather large food shop we did prior to the Uni move. The break was just what we all needed and we felt rested and chilled upon our return to Norfolk . Many Thanks

Beautiful lodge situated in lovely countryside

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Treetops for a week Sept '16, I thoroughly recommend the property - the lodge was very clean, fully equipped and had a nice modern Scandinavian feel to it. What I especially enjoyed was the peace and quiet just sitting and listening to the birds and the stream running. It is ideally situated just a stones throw from Slapton, Torcross & Dartmouth. And as it names says you really felt you were in the treetops.

A wonderful relaxing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a wonderful family holiday at Gara Mill. The lodge we started in was extremely comfortable, well equipped and beautiful decorated. It was a great base to explore the area and so close to many fantastic beaches. We would highly recommend Gara Mill -even the dog had a great time!

Best Break Ever

  • 5 of 5

This has been our favourite holiday destination for a few years now. The lodges are impeccably maintained and the grounds and surrounding areas are stunning. Nothing has been overlooked and I would recommend staying here to anyone. There are numerous fabulous pubs and restaurants nearby and plenty of family activities and breathtaking beaches.

Location

From the Owner

Gara Mill House has had lodges on its grounds since the 1950's. The Mill itself dates from the 1550's ! It is a perfect setting for a lodge - we have otters and small brown trout in the river. Birdlife in abundance. Insects including dragonfly, numerous butterflies and some Slow worms. Wild orchids too. All of that before you leave your lodge. The South Hams then gives you the chance to surf, sail, fish, waterski and the rest. We can arrange pony riding or Golf within a 10 minute drive. You can walk the most breathtaking coastline for entire week without exhausting new tracks and paths. We have the best produce here and three great towns to explore within a half our of us (Kingsbridge, Totnes, Dartmouth). It is perfect in every way for a holiday !

Facilities

From the Owner

As well as the wildlife, sport and food we have to offer the South Hams also has some terrific National Trust properties. Agatha Christies home at Greenway is only a few miles away and Collaton Fishacre, Sharpitor at Salcombe and Saltram House are all worth a visit. In addition you could take a trip on the steam train at Dartmouth or visit the Rare Breed Centre in Totnes. The Aquariam at Plymouth and Paignton Zoo are great day trips an hour away. Even the Eden Centre in Cornwall can be done as a day trip from here. One of my favourite trips out is twenty minutes away at Sharpham Vineyard; where you can walk, eat and drink happily for an afternoon. What could be better. (Must mention "Woodlands" - it is only 10 mins from the house and great for kids on a wet weather day !)

Notes:

  • Notes on accommodation: Each Lodge has been newly furnished for 2012/13. Decor is sleek and contemporary using the woodland, riverside setting as inspiration. Living room comprises TV. Kitchens are equipped for you to enjoy "eating in". Gas Hobs and Ovens, microwave, dishwasher (except in Garden Lodge), washing machine and dryer. Outside: Set alongside the river, visitors can enjoy paddling in the shallows, or taking in the bird life in our meadow and orchard. The site offers the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors either on site or on the local beaches and coastal footpaths. If you want to enjoy a relaxed outdoor "camping experience" without getting soggy under canvas a stay in our lodges is a great experience. All Lodges have a private terrace and we provide an area for BBQ and fire pit with panoramic views across the valley down towards the sea. The South Hams is blessed with fantastic local produce and as a result the local pubs and restaurants have great menus - eating in or out here is a fantastic part of visiting us.
