Sicilian Farmhouse With Private Pool And Views To Mountains And Sea

Overview

Property

Updated: 03-Aug-2016
Farmhouse in Modica, Sicily, Italy - Peaceful Rural Location Within Easy Reach Of Modica And Noto

Villa Alena offers the opportunity to stay in a rustic home but at the same time benefit from the comforts that come with a recent complete renovation. The villa is a traditional farmhouse in 12 acres of meadows and olive groves but also has a private swimming pool and landscaped garden. It is surrounded by unspoilt countryside in a quiet rural community but is just 10km from the vibrant town of Modica. The villa has air-conditioning in all the bedrooms and is fully equipped (including WiFi) but it still has a wood burning pizza oven, traditional cobbled courtyard and beautiful dry stone walls. Modica is the closest centre but the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Ragusa, Ibla, Scicli and Noto are all within a 30 minute drive. These stunning towns and the surrounding countryside have ensured South East Sicily is a favoured location for both television (“Inspector Montalbano”), and films alike (“The Leopard” and “The Star”).

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a fantastic time, the house ,pool, weather, food everything was perfect for us. Giorgio was very helpful and Joanna cooked a lovely meal for us on

Saturday evening, far too much, we had enough for dinner on Sunday

evening as well !

We all loved the pool and the surrounding countryside. The grandchildren

loved seeing the cows walking down the lane every morning and evening and

seeing the donkeys in the next field.

I thought I would drop you a few lines to express how much we enjoyed staying at Villa Alena last week,it did help that the weather was perfect if a trifle hot but the Villa was perfect, the pool was wonderful and the location idyllic. We even had our holiday donkey in the next field. My husband is not a keen swimming pool user but even he could not resist a pre breakfast dip each morning.

We made good use of the barbecue which was very easy to light and to cook on and and the outdoor dining area was perfectly situated with the olive trees providing shade.

Four bedroom house with pool

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful villa was all we could have hoped for and more.

When we arrived we were greated by Georgio who spoke perfect English. He was incredibly friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble throughout our stay.

This is without doubt the nicest pool we have had at any villa. It was such a good size and lovely temperature.

Inside, the villa was tastefully converted and well equipped.

We visited the wonderful towns of Ragusa,Noto and Ortigia all of which were fascinating and beautiful. We loved Modica as it felt like a real working town.We had the most wonderful toasted almond granita and brioche at our favourite Cafe dell'Arte for breakfast many mornings.

One of the highlights was the fantastic meal prepared for us by Giovanna. It was course after course of delicious local food beautifully cooked and prepared at the villa.Such a treat!

Calamosche beach in the Vendicari nature reserve was our favourite.Really amazing!

I would recommend this villa and the surrounding area to anyone. The perfect place to truly relax and unwind with so many places to explore near by.

We will definitely be back.

Ideal Villa for family holidays

  • 5 of 5

The Villa was exactly as stated, we were escorted to the property and given a comprehensive tour on arrival.

The Villa was as expected, and felt very homely.

Our holiday was made special by the attention to detail, the information supplied

and the work of Georgio, who could not have been more attentive and organised an excellent meal cooked in the Villa.

A great deal of time was spent around the impressive swimming pool and well kept garden area. The local Monaco restaurant provided an excellent Menu, and tasty food, and we also enjoyed Modica, with many eateries and a visit to the cheese shop proved a great success.

This property and area proved ideal to our family, aged 4 months to late 60's, it is very peaceful and the locals often give a friendly wave on passing, and we would have no hesitation in recommending this property to anyone requiring a secluded setting.

Excellent house & pool, peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

A really good holiday home in a peaceful rural setting - the only sounds (apart from the splishing of the pool) were occasional passing tractors and sheep bells. A comfortable house - true to description - with a generous pool (good for serious swimming – I did a kilometre most days – as well as ball games).

A good base for exploring baroque towns of south-east Sicily (our favourite probably Ragusa), beautiful hilly countryside and relaxed coast. (Maps and sat nav were not always that helpful – we ended up a few times completely lost or on roads that seemed to peter out - but all part of the fun....)

Local agent Georgio was helpful - and entertaining! - and would no doubt have coped with any crises if they arose (happily, they didn't).

A highlight was the Sicilian meal cooked by Maria (great seafood - and she also catered for one carnivore and one vegetarian). Definitely worth booking.

Also made a couple of visits to nearby handy Monaco restaurant and to Ristorante Fidone Maria in Frigintini - no menu, family cooking and endless courses - delicious but probably best to specify a shorter version of their full dinner unless you are extremely hungry.....

Too many visits to the excellent pasticceria in Frigintini - their home-made cannoli are quite addictive.

And worth mentioning the humble supermarket in same town - has most things you'll need and the most friendly, helpful staff.

Great Converted Farmhouse & Pool!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of seven adults had a wonderful holiday based in the lovely Villa Alena with all it's mod cons, salt pool and BBQ set in the olive tree countryside. It's a great base from which we explored the surrounding countryside, places of interest, towns & cities (including my uncle's war grave near Siracusa, a poignant moment) or just relaxing by the pool, eating outside under the stars and using the really good BBQ. With the exception of Siracusa, there were few tourists and we were the only ones at the local Cava d'Ispica & nearby water mill! The local food and wine were delicious, not forgetting the wonderful arancini, gelato & cannoli wherever we went. The people we met were all welcoming, friendly & ready to help in any way they could. Our two GPS, however, sometimes sent us down and around tiny steep tracks and dead ends! Ken's email before we went was full of helpful information about the area. Giorgio was a real bonus to our holiday - cheerful, helpful, knowledgable - always available and nothing was too much trouble including a welcome food pack which greeted us on our late arrival. Thank you Ken, Alena and Giorgio for making it the great holiday that it was!

Superb holiday

  • 5 of 5

The farmhouse was just superb - a beautiful location, lovely features,

spacious, all the 'mod cons' and of course the pool ... which some of us

braved despite the rather cool temperature!!! It all matched our needs

very well indeed.

Thank you for the advice regarding places to visit too; the drive to

Etna (and Taormina) and Argigento (valley of the temples) was well worth

the time and energy with breathtaking scenery and too many places of

historical interest to mention.

In addition, the local places were equally enjoyable - we loved the

Vendicari nature reserve (but we are bird watchers), Modica and

Sacremento were well worth a walking tour around the medieval parts.

Fascinating. The local catacombs and burial chambers at Ipsica (only a

few km away) were an expected treat too - the children loved exploring.

We also thought the take away pizza's from Monaco, the local

restaurant, we're well worth a recommendation. Along with the amazing

meal we had cooked in the farmhouse ... probably the best value fish

meal we've ever had. An absolute must for groups staying with you. The

meal was delicious with squid, mussels, octopus, prawns and the list

goes on. Yummy.

Could you please extend our thanks to Georgio too - he was very helpful

indeed, a real gentleman and nothing seemed to be too much trouble. A

real asset that helped the holiday go so smoothly.

Perfect Villa

  • 5 of 5

Our week in Sicily based at Villa Alena was one of the best holidays we have had. We will come again.

The villa is charming, practical, quiet and well located in the prestigious countryside of Modica.

The aim of our early November holiday was to get to know the baroque area of Sicily as a precursor to spending more holidays in Sicily. Using Modica as a base we were able to visit all the baroque towns and villages and as an amusing sideline look at the locations used in the Inspector Montalbano TV series. Wherever we went we found the people friendly, honest and helpful.

We enjoyed the local shops, cafes, and farmers' stands. All of the local businesses were very friendly and welcoming, more so with repeat visits during our stay - we really felt at home.

Villa Alena is a great base for exploring the countryside and the coast. We spent our mornings visiting the nearby towns -Modica, Ragusa, Siracusa and Noto were favorites. Getting off the main roads and into the Hyblean hills was a beautiful adventure. Afternoons were mostly spent on the beaches or by the lovely pool at the villa. It was great being there at the tail-end of the season - perfect weather and warm seas without the crowds.

All the information you need for a great visit is provided by the owner and George the caretaker was always available for any information,or at the tourist office in Modica. We LOVED it!

The restaurants provided good quality food at reasonable prices. We realized that we would need to return to the area again if we were to do justice to the history, pre baroque, and countryside let alone looking at the Allied Invasion of 1943.

Modica and Villa Alena will be our base for future holidays.

Location

From the Owner

We first fell in love with Sicily 8 years ago and finally decided to make our second home here 3 years ago. Having travelled and stayed at various parts of the island we felt most at home in the region of South East Sicily. Certainly there is a lot on offer- there are the incredibly beautiful towns of Modica, Noto, Ragusa and Sicli which are also very vibrant. The countryside and coastline are very reminiscent of our homeland - just 20 degrees warmer. The atmosphere of the region is however what makes Modica special for us and we are glad to say that in coming here regularly we have forged many close and life-long friendships.

Facilities

From the Owner

At night you can sit in the garden of Villa Alena looking up at the starry sky, listening to the chirping of the cicadas and be unaware of anyone else in the world. However just down the road is a terrific family restaurant (which locals drive out of Modica to savour), there is a busy rural community in Frigintini and Modica is just 5 miles away. We were first drawn to the rustic feel of the farm house and the idea of growing and pressing our own olives was very attractive. In renovating the property we have been very particular to preserve the original feel of the place but at the same time have been able to incorporate many of the conveniences we would want in our home.
