Character beamed barn with garden set amongst vineyards near Duras

Overview

Property

Updated: 11-May-2016
Comfortable, two bedroomed converted barn with terrace and garden

Surrounded by vineyards and in the tiny hilltop hamlet of Castelgaillard, just outside the village of St Sernin-de-Duras, this is a perfect holiday base. For the active there are walking and cycling trails galore, tennis in the village, bastide towns to be explored, family owned vineyards and foodie markets to be visited. The 2017 Tour de France will pass through Bergerac and onto the nearby town of Eymet on July 11th and 12th. Or if strolling to the village through the vineyards to buy bread in the morning is as active as you want to be, then you can just chill out in the garden or enjoy meals around the table in the shaded courtyard area.

We have an outdoor table tennis and a barbecue. Bicycles can be hired locally and delivered to the property ready for use on arrival at an extra cost. There is a lawn with sun beds and the whole property is set in lovely gardens with mature trees, through which the lake of Castelgaillard can be seen.

Inside there is free wi-fi, British television - as well as a well-equipped kitchen, attactive airy living areas, a shower room with toilet and upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms (one with a double bed and one with a double and a single bed) and throughout there are lots of beams! There are child gates on the stairs.

An enormous thank you for one of the most wonderful holidays. Your gite surpassed all expectations-we were really comfortable. Grant and Rozanne, Tanzania.

What a wonderful time we had and our only regret is that we have to leave. Castelgaillard has become like a second home and the gite had absolutely everything we needed. Ann, Victoria British Columbia.

A LOT of gite for the money!

We had a great time in this superb cottage despite uncharacteristically poor weather. We were warmly welcomed and given a useful little tour. The house proved to be superbly equipped and really did have everything we needed – and then some! It’s adjacent to the owners’ property, and while this means any questions/ problems you may have can be speedily resolved, you retain a high degree of privacy in the beautiful and secluded garden that was absolutely full of flowers. Castelgaillard is, as advertised, a tiny and very peaceful hilltop hamlet, and the only sounds you hear most of the time are birdsong and the hum of the bees.

Inside, the gite appears to be a stylish conversion of an outbuilding and yet has maintained many period features especially the beautiful old roof timbers. British Sky television and Wi-Fi mean that you don’t need to be completely cut off, but if you do want to get back to the style of autrefois there are always the 'off' switches!

Two well-used but completely safe and serviceable bikes are on offer, and we found these ideal for touring the gently rolling, vine covered countryside that surrounds the property. Further afield there are some great tourist sites within easy driving range, but the chateau at nearby Duras is really worth a visit.

There’s also an excellent little supermarket as well as a range of useful shops in Duras, a former bastide town which still retains some of its history. Bigger shops and supermarkets are also available inside 30 minutes’ drive.

We’d heartily recommend this gite and intend to go back ourselves at the earliest opportunity.

Further Details:

This is wine country, with numerous excellent vineyards in the area. From the smallest to the grandest, all are marked on wine route maps and can be visited. St. Emilion, half an hour away by car, is a beautifully preserved UNESCO medieval city, with a large variety of wine-related activities. The wine is not bad either! The dessert wines of Monbazilliac are also world renowned.. Duras, a short drive from here, is a small fortified town above the river Dropt. The Chateau de Duras, and open to visitors, offers panoramic views of the countryside below. There is a weekly market on Mondays, and the town has banks, a post office, restaurants, cafes, a butcher, supermarket, pharmacy etc. There are excellent markets nearby and on different days of the week, in Monsegur, Eymet, Issigeac and Ste Foy la Grande, our favourite. During the summer months, many of the local towns and villages have evening markets, where prepared food is eaten communally. For history lovers there are a great many Bastides to visit, dating from the 100 years War. The prehistoric cave paintings at Les Eyzies are magnificent.
