About the property

Stone Barn in Landscaped Gardens, Tranquil Setting, Spectacular Views,15 Minutes From Bastide, Farmers Market & Restaurant

…A Slice of Heaven, in France…

The gentle rolling hills of beautiful southwest France is the setting for La Durandie. The original 17th century Quercy-style barn - with stones thought to have come from a Medieval church - has been lovingly restored and converted into a luxury French country home. The villa combines a private upstairs apartment (unoccupied during your stay) with an extensive ground floor guest area sleeping 8 and consisting of two separate but adjoining living spaces. This is the ultimate together-but-with-privacy getaway, with each living space offering 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, separate kitchens, lounges and dining areas – but both opening up to a large shared loggia-style covered terrace for outdoor dining with woodland and valley views.

An oversized salt-water pool is set in 1 acre of carefully tended landscaped gardens that fall away to lush woodlands. It is the exceptional view that draws one in though, with the rock solid barn and fragrant gardens perched high up on the hill, overlooking the fields of sunflowers in the valley below. It is as if peace came here to rest and that is why you’ll find benches everywhere - places to relax and soak up the tranquility.

Paying homage to the area’s rich history, one of the guest areas is furnished with locally sourced French country antiques, while the other includes a number of Asian antiques collected by the owners over the years. French Limoges dinnerware and traditional Chabret chopping blocks can be found in both kitchens, added to the unique ambiance as East and West merge effortlessly in this centuries old building.

For discerning guests, we now provide a small in-house gym and a cinema, in addition to a well-stocked games room filled with table tennis, board games and all manner of ball games. We also offer our guests a full concierge service that includes excursion recommendations, arranging on-site prepared celebration dinners, wine tasting on the terrace, horse riding outings and even transfer services to night markets.

History is all around La Durandie as one drives from one ancient walled city (bastide) to the next, and one crusader-era hamlet church to the next magnificent hill-top basilica. The famous Caves of Lascaux and the ancient market town of Sarlat are both easy day-outings from our front gate, as are visits to the water lily gardens where Monet bought his lilies, ancient fortified castles and the famous black wines of Cahors. Farmer’s markets, evening soirees and live music, night markets, picnics, cycling and leisurely strolls through some of the most beautiful villages in France – these all await you.

With so much fresh air and wide open skies, there is no doubt that food tastes better here and wines hit different notes. Conversations take on philosophical proportions and days stretch just a little bit longer as time seems to slow down.

Jules Renard had once said that on earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.

He obviously hadn’t known about La Durandie…

About Annelize Booysen

Being global citizens, our travels brought us to this part of the world where we felt the pull to stop and smell the lavender.

Annelize Booysen purchased this barn in 2009

Why Annelize Booysen chose Lot-et-Garonne

We fell in love with the barn and the incredible views. The gentle landscape with its rolling hills is just a perfect setting for a home.

What makes this barn unique

There is no place on earth that has the peace and tranquility of La Durandie. The world washes away the moment you step out of your car and see the view. If you can tear yourself away from the pool and the garden, you have plenty of choices of places to visit and things to do. This really still is authentic France, and that is why we love it here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

It is a really great area, with a very nice garden and an impressive view from the pool area. We made some nice trips in the region. We visited Toulouse, Agen and the vineyards near Cahors. -The Bruring Family

BBQ, sunbathing, gaming, night-swimming, eating, sleeping, eating, BBQ, sunbathing, gaming, night-swimming... Okay, and lots of great regional attractions! - Family Meeus.

The house is beautiful and the pool is fantastic. We spend a great week at La Durandie! Fam Coriely, Belgium.

Amazing, tranquil absolutely 5 star *****

  • 5 of 5

After a long drive down as soon as you arrive at La Durandie all your worries just flow away. This place absolutely blew us away with its cleanliness and attention to detail not to mention the stunning gardens. We were a family of 6 with a small dog and all had plenty of room to relax, but also was lovely to get together of an evening eating dinner on the terrace. The cinema room became a boys den whilst us girls had pamper nights. The pool area was stunning and it was lovely to be able to swim decent lengths.

This place is very remote but we stocked up at a supermarket on our way which saw us through for about 3 days, we done a local market and took in the castle at Bonaguil.

Another recommendation would be to treat yourself to a fine dining evening, this was a fabulous evening where I didn't have to lift a finger.

We drove down from Calais stopping overnight at Le Mans, hindsight would have been to travel further south as the drive south on a Saturday was extremely busy!

My only negative was we didn't get the weather, but I guess you can't have it all.

I hope we can return one day as this place really felt like a home from home. Thank you Annelize for sharing your piece of paradise along with all your helpfulness leading up to our stay.

La Durandie - beautiful house and gardens, great location

  • 5 of 5

La Durandie is a beautiful house which has been lovingly and stylishly furnished and decorated. We loved the pool and gardens - there is a secret path with swing and water feature which are delightful. The pool gets sun all day long - and there are great open views across a valley with farmland and trees. The weather was so good we never found time to use the games room, but we did watch a movie in the cinema one evening - great picture and sound. There are lots of interesting places to visit and things to do in the area - we did some cycling along the Lot veloroute riding beside plum and apple orchards and we also went caneoing. This is a very beautiful, laid-back and uncrowded area to visit.

Absolutely perfect! Great for families with kids traveling together.

  • 5 of 5

It seems that everything was already written about La Durandie. We have spent a week and shared the house between 2 families, each with two young teens. Absolutely perfect in any way. Everybody loved the great, large swimming pool set in superb views and equipped with high end pool furniture. The kids enjoyed the game room set away from the house, as well as the soccer field. The distance from the house and pool allows for loud kids activities that are not disturbing the others. Media room added for some down time and the chef kitchen became the real play room for some of the adults.

The biggest, unsolvable problem of the house is that one doesn't want to leave and go out to explore the region - The solution: book for two weeks instead of one and you will not feel you miss anything (better three weeks to be on the safe side).

Thanks Annelize for all the info and great communication!

P.S.: Our family spends 8-9 weeks every summer renting houses in France, Italy and Portugal - we really gained the experience to say when something is outstandingly good - and this house is!

Still heavenly

  • 5 of 5

Our second visit to La Durandie was just as perfect as our first last year, This is rural France at its absolute best. La Durandie is a fabulous property both inside and out, incredibly well equipped with everything that you could need and all of good quality- a real home from home. The outside space is amazing - a large pool and beautiful landscaped gardens give a decadent feel to a great space to relax in.

Team La Durandie make you feel so welcome and the information, guides etc provide a good overview to the area for those new to Lot et Garonne.

The addition of a gym and cinema room this year provide extra facilities and although we didn't think we use them - temperatures of 35 degrees plus for most of our week was a sure catalyst for outside living - the cinema room provided a great late night relaxation space (we even bought ice creams to make it the full experience).

Already thinking about our plans for next year- can't wait.

perfect for a relaxing holiday in rural France

  • 5 of 5

Our party was made up of four adult couples. This beautiful villa has plenty of space inside & out. It was a treat to share a glass of wine and our meals together on the outside terrace. The inside of the property is furnished to a very high standard. Pool & gardens are clean & well maintained. There is plenty to see & do around this area though a car is a must. The information pack came in very useful and we tried out a few of the suggested restaurants and were not disappointed. Good value authentic French cooking.

We cannot fault Annelize & the team for their hard work as everything is perfect nothing is too much trouble. Have holidayed in France many times but this is now our favourite
