17th Century Quercy-Style Luxury Barn Villa With Private Pool And Valley View

Updated: 25-Oct-2016
Stone Barn in Landscaped Gardens, Tranquil Setting, Spectacular Views,15 Minutes From Bastide, Farmers Market & Restaurant

…A Slice of Heaven, in France…

The gentle rolling hills of beautiful southwest France is the setting for La Durandie. The original 17th century Quercy-style barn - with cornerstones thought to have come from a Medieval church - has been lovingly restored and converted into a luxury French country home. The villa combines a private upstairs apartment (unoccupied during your stay) with an extensive downstairs guest area sleeping 8 and consisting of two separate but adjoining living spaces. This is the ultimate together-but-with-privacy getaway, with each living space offering 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, separate kitchens, lounges and dining areas – but both opening up to a large shared loggia-style covered terrace for outdoor dining with woodland and valley views.

An oversized salt-water pool is set in 1 acre of carefully tended landscaped gardens that fall away to lush woodlands. It is the exceptional view that draws one in though, with the rock solid barn and fragrant gardens perched high up on the hill, overlooking the fields of sunflowers in the valley below. It is as if peace came here to rest and that is why you’ll find benches everywhere - places to relax and soak up the tranquility.

Paying homage to the area’s rich history, one of the guest areas is furnished with locally sourced French country antiques, while the other includes a number of Asian antiques collected by the owners over the years. French Limoges dinnerware and traditional Billot Chabret chopping blocks can be found in the both kitchens, added to the unique ambiance as East and West merge effortlessly in this centuries old building.

For discerning guests, we now provide an in-house gym and a by invitation-only private screening room, in addition to a well-stocked games room filled with table tennis, board games and all manner of ball games. We also offer our guests a full concierge service that includes excursion recommendations, arranging on-site prepared celebration dinners, wine tasting on the terrace, horse riding outings and even transfer services to night markets.

History is all around La Durandie as one drives from one ancient walled bastide to the next and one crusader-era hamlet church to the next magnificent hill-top basilica. The famous Caves of Lascaux and the ancient market town of Sarlat are both easy day-outings from our front gate, as are visits to the water lily gardens where Monet bought his lilies, ancient fortified castles and the famous black wines of Cahors. Farmer’s markets, evening soirees and live music, night markets, picnics, cycling and leisurely strolls through some of the most beautiful villages in France – these all await you.

With so much fresh air and wide open skies, there is no doubt that food tastes better here and wines hit different notes. Conversations take on philosophical proportions and days stretch just a little bit longer as time seems to slow down.

Jules Renard had once said that on earth there is no heaven, but there are pieces of it.

He obviously hadn’t known about La Durandie…

It is a really great area, with a very nice garden and an impressive view from the pool area. We made some nice trips in the region. We visited Toulouse, Agen and the vineyards near Cahors. -The Bruring Family

The Incredibly Beautiful La Durandie

  • 5 of 5

It was our second visit to La Durandie this summer. The holiday was absolutely amazing! We had a fantastic time creating some great memories along the way.

La Durandie is an incredibly beautiful place set in the middle of the beautiful French countryside. The only thing that will disturb you is the odd "moo" from the valley. The villa itself is very well appointed and equipped and was absolutely perfect for our large family holiday (11 of us). The gardens are stunning and are tended to by the friendly gardener Pierredrick. Not that there were many but, any issues were resolved by Annelize, Victoria and team very quickly. Victoria even arranged a doctors appointment for our 3 year old while we were there.

Although in the middle of the countryside you are well positioned to be served by Bergerac airport. We took on a 2000 mile round car journey which all three drivers in the convoy enjoyed but it's not for everyone and we did split the journey over two days with a hotel stopover halfway.

There are some fantastic Bastides (historical fortress towns) nearby. Some of our favourites include Penne-d'Agenais where the walk up to the church and ruins is well worth the effort. Pujols is very pretty and nice for lunch as is Monflanquin. We also went to the night market in Beauville which was absolutely brilliant and well served by the many visiting purveyors of fine food and drink. We arranged a minibus through Victoria and our driver the affable Raymond was very accommodating.

The French really know how to do a supermarket and the E.Leclerc about 20 mins away is no exception and should have everything you need. The slightly nearer and smaller Intermarche in Saint-Sylvestre-sur-Lot is also great for smaller shopping trips.

I rarely write reviews but I really believe that Annelize and team deserve recognition for the two amazing holidays we have had at the beautiful La Durandie. My only concern is that our chances of rebooking may become slimmer as more people learn of this incredible place :-).

We will definitely return in the future but until then thank you to Annelize and team for making our holiday so wonderful.

Just as the website says - slice of heaven.

  • 5 of 5

Our visit to La Durandie was more of an experience than just a holiday. From the day we booked we felt like old friends coming to visit - emails wishing us happy new year and it's not long to go now and a lovely personalised information pack received by post which made us look forward even more to our holiday.

The photographs make the property look wonderful and I think it's probably even better in reality. The house is extremely well equipped and tasteful in its decoration - modern with a hint of the exotic.

The outside space, which was why we booked (2 adults and 2 dogs only in our party), is amazing - so relaxing, fantastic views but enough space/activities to entertain children if you have them.

The area is full of picturesque bastide towns and if you arrange your visits around the markets (timetable very helpfully provided) shopping, eating and drinking and local culture all readily available.

We had a fabulous time and this is a fabulous property - would we recommend? Most definitely.

Peaceful escape in beautiful countryside

  • 4 of 5

The house is in beautiful surroundings well kept gardens and a breathtaking view from the large pool side. It is very isolated and surrounded by fields of sunflowers , deer ,soaring buzzards and close to the river Lot with wonderful Bastide towns and chateaus to visit. This is perfect for a peaceful escape ! The house is well equipped with a great eating area on the veranda , it is worth noting that the top floor of the house is the owners private area ( unnoccupied ) and that the rental is the entire ground floor area . House very clean and comfortable but the bunk room probably too small for teenagers though fine for smaller children. Hilltop village of Monflanquin recommended for a visit and dinner out . Games room great for keeping kids entertained and table tennis for competitive parents. The pool is a really good size and well maintained. We had a really great 2 weeks despite some unseasonable rain would highly recommend La Durandie.

Magnificient !!

  • 5 of 5

I would just like to say a big thank you from all of our family for our wonderful holiday at La durandie. We had the most wonderful time and the house is absolutely magnificent, the beautiful setting, the facilities, the gardens and the whole ambience of the house and peacefulness of the location is just what we all needed.

We didn't actually venture far from the house apart from the odd day out and shopping as everyone felt so relaxed we didn't feel the need to go far. We have visited that part of France several times before but with all sincerity La durandie is the nicest place we have ever stayed. We celebrated my nieces exam results, our wedding anniversary and a birthday so there was plenty of excuses to enjoy the local wine.

Victoria was a great help and so was the gardener albeit we did not have to call on them too often but it was good to know they were on hand if needed. I sincerely hope we will visit La durandie again.

Once again many thanks

From the Owner

There is no place on earth that has the peace and tranquility of La Durandie. The world washes away the moment you step out of your car and see the view. If you can tear yourself away from the pool and the garden, you have plenty of choices of places to visit and things to do. This really still is authentic France, and that is why we love it here.
