A great get away for two

  • 5 of 5

Spacious yet warm and cosy, this is a great base for enjoying wild Dartmoor to the full (the underfloor heating soon dried our kit!) or just hide away from the world. Despite being in the centre of Ashburton, the cottage was surprisingly quiet and we had a great night's sleep. Looking forward to going back again.

A really spectaculary retreat in a lovely town

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have asked for a better two nights in Devon! Steve and Jen were absolutely delightful and their home, as well as their coach house property for rent are beautiful and very well maintained. The town is very small, but has quite a few restaurants, shops and a very nice market if you're staying for a few days and want to cook. Absolutely everything we could have wanted was stocked in the house, and if we had found anything lacking, I'm sure that Jen would have found it for us, immediately.

Absolutely immaculate inside, the coach house is so well maintained and well appointed; we were happier there than at our own home, I think! Give the local pub a try for their pizza, and the local Indian takeaway was also delicious. The market is not to be missed if you want to stock the fridge for a few days, but can be a little tricky to find. Jen gave us wonderful directions and we still felt like we must have taken a wrong turn somewhere!

I highly recommend this property for anyone who wants a relaxing retreat in Devon. Day-tripping into Dartmoor National Park and over to Cornwall was a breeze. We will definitely stay with Jen and Steve again if we return to the area!

Another great VRBO find!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed in Ashburton in "The Coach House". Everything about it is perfect from the wonderful owners and hosts, Steve and Jen, to the quality of the refurbishment, the location and the village of Ashburton itself. Do not hesitate to book this unique and wonderful accommodation!

Character property in beautiful town

  • 4 of 5

The barn is really well renovated, and Ashburton is a great place to stay. Steve and Jen were really helpful with local recommendations for food and drink and made us feel very comfortable and welcome. Property was clean on arrival and everything we needed in the kitchen. Great location for Dartmoor and the coast. Would recommend to other couples without hesitation.

Great Place to Stay

  • 4 of 5

We have just stayed at The Coach House, Whistley Hall, Ashburton for a long weekend whilst I was at Ashburton Cookery School, Jenny & Steve were great hosts and have done a fantastic job converting the Coach House. It was spotlessly clean and is a great set up with really good cooking facilities.

A big plus in Ashburton was the car parking and being centrally located there was no need to use the car locally. The Coach House is maintained and decorated throughout to a high standard with plenty of room to relax. We will certainly return when in the area again

Further Details:

There is a wealth of beautiful places to visit in Devon and the lively little town of Ashburton, gateway to Dartmoor, is the ideal place to stay. With its many fascinating antique outlets, shops, cafes and bars, Ashburton is one of only four stannary (ancient tin trading as early as 1285 AD) towns in Devon.

Ashburton has been named best Dartmoor town by the Daily Telegraph in the wake of Stephen Spielberg's movie 'War Horse'.

Maintaining its historic roots, traditional ceremonies are retained - Ale Tasting, Bread Weighing and Medievel Fayre in July. The ancient office of Portreeve is still held (the only one now held by Act of Parliament in England). Ashburton Carnival in July, ten days of events culminating in the grand procession of floats through town, dates back over 100 years. The renowned Ashburton Blues Festival in June and Food & Drink Festival in September are among the many annual events.
