Beautifully Converted Chapel In The Town Of Fowey, Cornwall, England

Updated: 03-Oct-2016
House in Fowey, Cornwall, - A Fowey Property With a Car Park conveniently situated directly opposite - Free WI-F

This interesting and attractive red brick building was originally built as a place of worship for the Roman Catholic community in Fowey and was converted into residential accommodation about 20 years ago. With ‘reversed' accommodation, the property incorporates a superb first floor open-plan living area with a high, sloping, ceiling. There are three bedrooms an en-suite wet room and shower room on the ground floor. This end of the town incorporates the Caffa Mill car and dinghy park, the Bodinnick Ferry landing slip and an access point to the river, for boat launching, (by arrangement with the Harbour Office). The property is situated only a ten minute stroll into the centre of town but has the great advantage of being accessible from the ‘back road' (Passage Lane) thereby avoiding the town centre traffic. The house offers good quality accommodation and is an ideal choice particularly for families.

About the Owner

St Monicas is a family owned house, we bought it in 2009 as we were spending more and more time in Fowey. Whilst we do use it as much as possible it is great to see others have the benefit when we can't. [and it helps to pay the bills!)

The prices shown are for a full 7 night week - please contact us for shorter breaks

A Perfect Place for Well Earned Break

  • 5 of 5

St Monica's is a beautiful property- fitted out and maintained to a very high standard. The kitchen is well equipped and the ensuite wet room was fab.

The living area takes up the whole of the upper level. It's bright , light and spacious, so great for a family holiday or gathering. We needed a quiet, relaxing week and St Monica's was also perfect for this.

It's a gentle stroll into the town, so easy for bits of shopping, tea & cakes or restaurants/pubs.. There are plenty of walks to do. Our favourite was to hop over to Bodinnick on the car ferry and walk back along the river towards Polruan. You can then take the passenger ferry back over to Fowey.

The cars going to the ferry don't go close by St Monica's so noise isn't an issue. They and the boats using the slipway do make fascinating watching though! Watching the gig rowers in the evening was lovely.

We visited right at the end of the Easter school holidays, . Found it useful to buy a one week rover car park permit so we could use the car park opposite St Monica's (and also in Cornwall CC car parks in other towns nearby)

We've recommended St Monica's to anyone who asked us if we had had a good holiday in Cornwal!

Great New Year Break

  • 5 of 5

We booked this property at the very last minute and Stuart and Ruth were exceptionally helpful even though it was during the Christmas break and we wanted to arrive the very next day!

The location is wonderful just on the edge of Fowey by the car ferry. Lots to do in the town, restaurants, bars, pubs and good bakeries. Near lots of walks and great scenery.

The house was even better than expected, the standard of the renovation is exceptionally high and the photos have not done it justice. The large picture windows at the front of the house drew lots of admiring glances from those walking by and provide a great view of the nearby river. The shower rooms are immaculate and have under floor heating. The third bedroom has bunk beds and is very small, but as the shared space is so big this was not a problem. The internet was a bonus as we could not get a phone signal.

This is all you could wish for in a holiday rental and we hope to be back!

Best Living Room in Fowey!

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at St Monicas - mixed weather ( as you might expect from a bank holiday weekend!) - and the old Chapel was perfect for enjoying that. We were part of a larger group of friends who hired two houses in Fowey for the long weekend, and the upstairs living room in the chapel was without doubt the best place to while away the hours. The large windows look over the Bodinnick car ferry so there is always something to watch (but far enough away that the noise is irrelevant)- and we had two small children in our group, 2.5 years, who loved the low windows and standing against the glass watching the world go by! the upstairs is flooded with light and can get warm very easily if it is bright outside, but you can open windows both sides to get a lovely breeze coming through.

This was great- we'll definitely come back again if we can. Stuart and Ruth were great to deal with- really straightforward and friendly in communications. We love Fowey. hired small boats from Fowey River Boathouse- went up to Golant and Lerryn on the tides- great.

Only one note- the main door is on a lever lock and so doesn't lock behind you automatically- you have to lock it from the inside and that can be slightly complicated if your party is doing things at different times and kids are napping on the ground floor.

This property is within a few metres of the River Fowey. The nearest beach, is at Readymoney Cove which is about 20 minutes walk - ideal for families with a swimming platform it is also good for rock pooling at low tide. Ten minutes drive is Polkerris, a sheltered harbour beach with facilities including a pub and restaurant and water sports equipment for hire and tuition. Dogs allowed October to Easter. Par Sands (10 min drive) allows dogs all year round and also attracts kite surfers.

Nearest railway station is Par: 3 miles from Fowey.

Newquay Airport is 27 miles distant and Exeter Airport 82 miles.

Plymouth is 35 miles away and is the nearest sea port for Channel crossings (Brittany Ferries), and the journey time from Plymouth to Fowey is about 70 minutes.

Visiting by car, whether hired or owned, is probably the best way to see the more remote parts of Cornwall. However if you want to get away from driving, there is lots to do in and around Fowey without need of a car.

Leisure activities are very much centred around boating - whether it be sailing, motor boating or canoeing. There are also a wide range of boat trips available to other coastal towns and down the River Fowey. Walking is another popular pastime either along the Cornish Coastal Path or the All Saints Way which crosses Cornwall from Fowey to Padstow.

Fowey has an excellent selection of local shops selling 'designer' clothes and crafts as well as art galleries, book shops and a tourist information office. There is also a chemist, butchers, fish shop and post office. There are pubs, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets and a cash machine is on hand in the centre of town.

Fowey is also known for its connections with Daphne Du Maurier - it was her home for many years and the town now celebrates with an annual literary festival.
