Delightful Victorian hunting lodge adjoining 17th Century Welsh stone farmhouse - Old Farmhouse, sleeps 6 (3 bedrooms)

Overview

Property

Updated: 09-Dec-2016
Welsh stone cottages (2 bedrooms and 3 bedrooms) in unspoiled Radnor Forest

Hidden at the top of a secluded valley in mid-Wales, these pretty stone cottages are a lovely place to enjoy a relaxing holiday in unspoiled Welsh border country at any time of the year. Our cottages are in Radnorshire, the least populated area in England and Wales. Great for walking or mountain-biking in the Radnor Forest, or just relaxing in the garden while enjoying the peace and quiet, and freedom from TV and mobiles! Further afield, explore wild Elan Valley (21miles), Offa's Dyke Path at Knighton (11miles), Llandrindod Wells Victorian spa town (14miles), Builth Wells Royal Welsh Show (21miles). Originally a medieval 'hall house', the Old Farmhouse with its 3ft thick stone walls is one of the oldest properties in the area. The Lodge was added in Victorian times as accommodation for grouse hunters. Both cottages have traditional Welsh slate floors, oak beams, and a wood-burning stove. The large shared garden has lovely views across fields to the Radnor Forest beyond.

About the Owner

The cottages are owned by siblings Alison Muldal, Chris Lock and Rossy McLaren who inherited the property from their parents, Michael and Averill Lock in about 1995. Although we are all busy working people living in different parts of England, we visit the cottages as often as we can for holidays, and for painting, gardening and 'fixing' sessions. The cottages and garden are well cared for in our absence, by our wonderful local cleaner and gardener.

Perfect location for a family celebration!

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at the Old Farmhouse for a family celebration. The location is in a picture perfect setting, total tranquility with the most wonderful walks from the door. The Farmhouse is very cosy with a log burner inside and fit pit outside. The garden is a great space for the kids to run free. No TV meant a long weekend of games, talking and much laughter. Lovely!

Happy family holiday!

  • 5 of 5

The Old Farmhouse is a lovely, historic property in a secluded location within the Radnor Forest - c.1.5 miles from the main road. Its setting is idyllic, adjacent to a stud farm, fields of sheep, and a small stream. Two double bedrooms and a twin (accessed from the master double) was perfect for four adults and two children.

We had a very enjoyable few days exploring the surrounding area, including the Radnor Forest itself, and generally just relaxing away from the hustle of daily life. The absence of mobile signal and internet connection was refreshing, albeit both can be received within a few minutes' drive of the Old Farmhouse. There is also a landline phone in the property if needed.

We found the owners very helpful and responsive in booking the accommodation, and we would certainly consider returning in the future.

Rare and lovely vintage feel! Beautiful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved it! Booked it at such short notice and all was done smoothly with no hustle. Family friendly cottage, good for a getaway from the busy city life! We didn't miss our mobile phones and the house is dotted with radios so we could listen to what's happening 'out there'..it was also good to know we could get mobile signal 5-10 minutes drive from the cottage. Fire stove definitely one of its best features! Clean cottage with Radnorshire forest in sight, lovely country side views and has a lovely vintage feel, furniture is well thought out. Lots of games and books and the kitchen is well stocked, with all the fancy gadgets and is a modern kitchen. Lots of blankets and a good selection of bird food stored in the house for guests to fill feeders for the birds...that really impressed me! Would recommend a drive through Élan valley not too far off as it has breath taking views! Large supermarket about 10 minutes drive from the cottage for everyday essentials. Would definitely go again!

We love this cottage

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay, this time the kids didn't even ask to bring a playstation. The stone living room (with fire) is really the central feature of the property and we had some great nights talking by the fire, singing and relaxing. The walks from the door are easy (ish) and offer access to wonderful countryside from the first step out. Looking forward to more trips in the near future. The ground offer loads of space for kids and adults to play, relax and enjoy the peace.

Just the right thing

  • 5 of 5

We spent a few days at the Old Farmhouse in August with our daughter and her husband (both from UK). We were looking for a historic farmhouse in a rural quite setting, preferably close to some forests, with a cosy fire lit warm lounge for those lovely family discussions, an outside campfire setting where we could enjoy a 'under the stars' BBQ while surrounded by only farm/forest night sounds, and of course a silence induced content sleep. Well we found that all here at the Old Farmhouse - Just the right thing!

Location

From the Owner

The Lodge Cottage and Old Farmhouse has been in our family since 1968, when my parents bought the property from the Forestry Commission in order to escape from their busy working lives and civilization. Over the years, we have lovingly renovated the cottages whilst maintaining their traditional features and character, so as to be able to offer other people the chance to stay in well-appointed self-catering holiday accommodation in the delightfully secluded Cwmygerwyn valley.
