Hidden at the top of a secluded valley in mid-Wales, these pretty stone cottages are a lovely place to enjoy a relaxing holiday in unspoiled Welsh border country at any time of the year. Our cottages are in Radnorshire, the least populated area in England and Wales. Great for walking or mountain-biking in the Radnor Forest, or just relaxing in the garden while enjoying the peace and quiet, and freedom from TV and mobiles! Further afield, explore wild Elan Valley (21miles), Offa's Dyke Path at Knighton (11miles), Llandrindod Wells Victorian spa town (14miles), Builth Wells Royal Welsh Show (21miles). Originally a medieval 'hall house', the Old Farmhouse with its 3ft thick stone walls is one of the oldest properties in the area. The Lodge was added in Victorian times as accommodation for grouse hunters. Both cottages have traditional Welsh slate floors, oak beams, and a wood-burning stove. The large shared garden has lovely views across fields to the Radnor Forest beyond.
The cottages are owned by siblings Alison Muldal, Chris Lock and Rossy McLaren who inherited the property from their parents, Michael and Averill Lock in about 1995. Although we are all busy working people living in different parts of England, we visit the cottages as often as we can for holidays, and for painting, gardening and 'fixing' sessions. The cottages and garden are well cared for in our absence, by our wonderful local cleaner and gardener.
Alison Muldal purchased this cottage in 1968
The Lodge Cottage and Old Farmhouse has been in our family since 1968, when my parents bought the property from the Forestry Commission in order to escape from their busy working lives and civilization. Over the years, we have lovingly renovated the cottages whilst maintaining their traditional features and character, so as to be able to offer other people the chance to stay in well-appointed self-catering holiday accommodation in the delightfully secluded Cwmygerwyn valley.

"Seeking Peace and Tranquillity? Look No Further!"
We have stayed at The Lodge Cottage with friends on two occasions and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for an antidote to the stresses of modern life! Set in a beautiful location the cottage is cosy and well equipped. There are an abundance of walks in the area for beginners through to experienced hikers! Heavy snow on our last visit transformed the valley into a Winter Wonderland! It was refreshing to see our children away from their phones and games consoles! We have many happy memories of this place and would visit again.

We have been going to the Old Farmhouse and Lodge Cottage for 7 years and will continue to go for many years to come. It is easy to book. There is no TV, no reception for mobiles, just peace and quiet. There is a landline if needed. It is at the end of a 2 mile track. It has all the facilities that you need.
We ask for a £50 deposit for each cottage to confirm the booking, with the balance due 1 month before your stay.
Saturday - for weekly bookings. Arrive after 3pm, and leave by 11am on date of departure. We also take short (minimum 3 nights) mid-week and weekend bookings during off-peak times of year.
Notes on prices:
25% discount on cost of Lodge Cottage rent, if you rent both cottages together.
Rent is reduced by £12 per booking, if you bring all your own bed linen and towels.
Midweek and weekend short breaks - contact owner for price.
Driving up through the valley's to find the cottage i never dreamed it would be so secluded and peaceful, straight away me and my family felt so peaceful like never before. We arrived at the cottage and straight away fell in love. It was night time so we couldnt anticipate what a treat we was in for the following morning.
We were starving on arrival so straight away began cooking, the cottage has every facility you could ever need!
The following morning when we woke up to the birds singing and the clouds resting above the trees we fell in love on another level!
I have never felt stillness like it!
The cottage is the most cosiest, homely and inviting place i have ever stayed, we have just rebooked two months later!
We went on plenty of beautiful walks, the scenery and wildlife are unreal and magical! Being far enough away from the nearest town (10-15 mins) was perfect! No background noise at all.
We used the beautiful log fire most nights for the ultimate cosiness. It was a great experience. My partner enjoyed the whole process, cutting our own wood, getting the fire going and keeping it topped up.
The cottage was so warm even with stone floors the heaters were on a timer so no need to worry. Theres plenty of games and books for everyone, a raidio & Information guidlines too.
The bed was like a huge cloud pillow we had the best sleep ever! even with a 10 month year old ;)
Overall we couldn't fault this place. Our dream is to live somewhere as tranquil and peaceful as the cottage lodge, thank you Alison and family for helping us define our dream lifestyle.
We cant wait to stay again
We booked both cottages for a family weekend away.
Kids had plenty of space to play inside as well as outside.
They loved running up the small grass patch outside with sheep and horses grazing next door.
Lovely quiet location and a character cottage. We definitely did not miss computer or television. Perfect if you want a getaway to relax and unwind.
We loved it and would love to return. Isolated in the best way but close enough to the villages. The surroundings are great for walking from your door or spending a day exploring right around the cottages. The house was well equipped and very clean and welcoming. Our small children loved it, and it was perfect for them. Thank you.
This was our second stay, this time the kids didn't even ask to bring a playstation. The stone living room (with fire) is really the central feature of the property and we had some great nights talking by the fire, singing and relaxing. The walks from the door are easy (ish) and offer access to wonderful countryside from the first step out. Looking forward to more trips in the near future.
We have stayed here with our dogs several times. The house is warm, clean and very practical. The garden is neat and a delight to sit out in to enjoy the fresh air. We go for the walking and peace and quiet - it would be hard to find a quieter and more remote place to stay.
There is a footpath into the forest from the back door and a bridle path from the front. You can stay a week without ever crossing a tarmac road!
The surrounding area is full of old castles, ancient monuments and places to visit.
Its not the place to go if you are addicted to the internet or television but the radio works and there are lots of books to read - either in the warmth of the garden or sitting in front of the blazing log fire.
Bring some bird food if you want to see the nuthatches, tits and masses of other birds.
We were delighted with Lodge Cottage. It is beautifully set and guests' needs are meticulously addressed. Thank you very much for providing such splendid accommodation; we have stayed in many great self-catering properties, but this is the best yet.
