About the Owner

I own the château jointly with my two sisters, and it has been in our family since 2001. We all live in the UK with our families and regularly come out to the château. Having enjoyed many family holidays there, we knew it would be a wonderful holiday let for those who wish to stay in a château but not worry about the upkeep!

Guestbook comments from the owner

We drove along the wooded driveway and from across a sea of ox-eye daisies first saw the château. The pale towers under silky slate cones, at each end of the house, enhanced the fairytale picture-book quality of the scene. From the moment we saw it to the final farewell, this house gave everything promised in the literature, and more ... Kathy Waudby, May 2012

WOW! what a place you have!

We had a superb time at the Chateau - which certainly has the WOW factor. You had thought of everything! And thank you very much indeed for the complimentary champagne - which was very well received on the first night!

The chateau was particularly well suited for our party because it was very much geared up for children; the games room, the swimming pool, the woods, all the equipment, etc. The children didn't even ask to play on the computer games (in the games room). .. Caroline Duffy, June 2012

An ideal place for a family holiday for all genera

  • 5 of 5

There were clear instructions to find the chateau which turned out to be as described, clean, attractive and with a well appointed family kitchen. The dining room was big enough for our group which was large, though mostly we ate in the kitchen. If you wanted peace and quiet, there was a lovely and comfortable salon; while the children had a large games room with all sorts of things ranging from puzzles to ping pong, plus a TV and videos. There was WiFi throughout and a well equipped gym. There are bicycles, but a main attraction was the swimming pool and barbecue area. The water was warm and there were plenty of lounges by the poolside.

We had been in touch with Isabel prior to our arrival and she was there to meet us and answer any questions, so that was reassuring.

In the nearest villages (Villedieu and St Macaire) there are boulangeries and small supermarkets, so we bought fresh bread daily.

Eating out was a great pleasure! There is a small family restaurant in St Macaire called Pachankas which sells pizzas, palettes, crepes etc, but the main family restaurants are in Cholet (try the Grand Cafe in the main square) and Clisson. For finer dining our favourite was Restaurant de la Vallee down by the old bridge in Clisson (book if you go on Friday, market day). We also liked La Touchetiere, on the outskirts of Cholet - excellent food, but less ambience. We used the caterers in Cholet for a grand family celebration and they were reliable providing good food as well as delivering it and collecting the dishes. (There was an extra charge for this but they were very difficult to locate, so it was a help).

The information files in the kitchen were useful and we tended to split up for sightseeing. I loved the Japanese gardens at Maulevrier; they were beautiful, but the troglodyte caves were popular too. If you want a whole day out go to Puy du Fou with its spectacles. We had booked for this as it is popular and I would love to go again if in the area. (We did not rate the English audio descriptions and managed without them. Also, take some food to eat while waiting for the spectacle to start).

Angers is another day trip and there is a great deal to see there, so we limited ourselves to the chateau and the tapestries. Some people went to Nantes and liked the fantastical carousel and the enormous mechanical elephant (booking essential if you want a ride)

I would certainly recommend this chateau to other people.

Location

From the Owner

Our father bought the château in 2001 because of its rural location in the unspoilt Loire Valley. The château is surrounded by 20 acres of parkland, woods and fields and has wonderful views across the countryside and yet feels private and secluded. Local shops are only minutes away, and there is plenty to see and do in the area if you can tear yourself away! One of France's top tourist attractions, Puy de Fou (historical re-enactments on truly grand scale) - is about half and hour away. Taste the wines of the Loire Valley, visit châteaux or just relax back at your very own château (for the week, anyway)! Despite its rural location, the château is only 4 hours from the main cross channel ports and 6 from Calais via excellent road links.

Activity and Interests

Coast/Beach:

One and a half hours drive to the traditional and pretty resort town of Pornic. The town has several small sandy beaches.

Travel:

Excellent road links mean the cross channel ports of Le Havre, Caen and Cherbourg are all within 4 hours drive. Calais is approximately 5 1/2 hours while St Malo is only 2 1/2 hours away. Nantes airport, which has a good selection of car rental agencies, is a mere 40 minutes away making the château an ideal location for those planning either a short break or a longer holiday.

Distances:

The small town of Villedieu is less than 5 minutes away, and has a bank, post office, ATM, pharmacy, supermarket, bakery and petrol.

The larger town of St Macaire is 10 minutes away and has a greater variety of the same facilities.

One of France's top tourist destinations, Puy de Fou, is about half an hour away. The beautiful town of Clisson is half an hour, and Nantes, Angers and Saumur are all good places to visit for the day, offering a mix of châteaux, abbeys, churches and wineries etc.

Facilities

From the Owner

In summer guests can enjoy the large enclosed and fully heated pool, and when the weather is not so favourable the château has a well equipped gym, a games room, a large salon as well as a stunning wood panelled dining room in which everyone can dine together. Conversation flows easily in this room which is adorned with a glittering chandelier and original family portraits. Many properties that accommodate similar numbers of people lack seating facilities for everyone in one sitting. Our large bespoke table easily accommodates 20, meaning everyone can eat together. Should you wish to have a chef cater a dinner party for you, or perhaps something less formal, we can supply details. The château is fully accessible to wheel chair users on the ground and, via a lift, the first floor.
