Cariad, a well appointed character cottage with private garden, close to beaches

Updated: 16-May-2016
Cottage in St Buryan, Nr. Penzance / Sennen, Cornwall, England - Central Location 2, 5 Miles To Spectacular Beaches, Coastal Path, Minnack Theatre & Good Restaurants

Cariad, is a mid terrace stone built labourer's cottage circa 1850. Recently renovated and extended into a compact but spacious and comfortable family cottage. Orignal features have been retained and restored, resulting in a character property. We have a wood burning stove in the original granite fire place, Travertine floors througout downstairs. Good sized and well equipped kitchen, overlooking a paved courtyard, leading into a private lawned garden with brick built BBQ. St Buryan is a well serviced village with Post office shop, Londis, antique shop, Saturday farmers market, pub, garage with petrol and diesel and two churches. Easy access to the spectacular beaches of West Cornwall, Sennen Cove and Porthcurno also the home of the Minnack Theatre. Perfectly situated for walking, cycling, swimming, surfing fishing and memorable family holidays. Regretably NO PETS

About the Owner

Anthea and I live in Herefordshire. Anthea is retired and I am taking more time off. We have a large family who are spread out in England and abroad. At home we are keen gardeners and have a beautiful garden. It is still exciting to get away to Cariad, our home by the sea!

Had a great week in May half term, cracking location to explore the beaches and sights around St. Ives and the Lizard. BBQ was really handy, cottage was lovely and had local shops and a pub close by. Thank you

From the Owner

We love the sea and enjoy swimming. St Buryan is very convenient for two of the best beaches in the south west, Porthcurno and Sennen. Porthcurno is a sheltered cove with a small beach and deep water, ideal for swimming. Sennen is an open beach with perhaps half a mile of fine sea sand and more suited to surfing or swimming in the surf. We also love walking and there are innumerable coastal walks, most of which can be walked as a circuit. So it is possible to drive or ride you bike to the location and walk out from there. Prior to buying our own cottage we had hired holiday cottages in the south west for many years. Cariad was much unloved when we bought it. It has been a very pleasurable project rebuilding, restoring and scouring antique shops for our furnishings. Enjoy!

Activity and Interests

2.5 to 3 miles to both Sennen cove, a seaside village with extensive open sands and good surfing and bathing and Porthcurno, beautiful and sheltered with clear deep water. Lamorna cove is a good spot for fishing and deep sea diving.

Regular bus service to Penzance, St Ives and Newlyn. Main train station in Penzance with sleeper service to London. Paddington. Lands end airport near St Just is close to St Buryan and Penzance. Light aircraft service the Isles of Scilly and Newquay. Ferry service from Penzance to the Isles of Scilly.

Further Details:

Penzance has branches of most major banks. Two big supermarkets outside Penzance. Interesting selection of independant shops. M&S and Next have reasonably big branches on the A30 at Hayle. Both Penzance and Newlyn have working harbours. Newlyn in particular has an active fishing fleet so fresh fish, prawns, crab and shell fish are freely available at very reasonable prices.

St Ives, very quaint, is close by and well known for the Tate Gallery also has excellent shops selling art, jewelry and branded clothing and accessories.

St Michaels Mount in Marazion is a well known landmark and worth a visit.

Restaurants abound. Close to St Buryan you have The Coast Guard hotel and 4 Street in Mousehole, Logans Rock pub in Treen, The Beach and Old Success in Sennen, a good Pizza place and fish and chips in Newlyn and last but not least The Gurnards Head at Zennor. We have a folder in the cottage with a list of restaurants.

From the Owner

We think Cariad (which by the way is a Welsh word for sweetheart) will give you a relaxing holiday. St Buryan has a Post Office with shop, a Londis and a Pub. Penzance is 7 miles away and has much more. There are good restaurants nearby in Sennen, Treen, Mousehole and Newlyn. Newlyn, being a working fishing harbour has excellent fish shops. You can also eat in. We have a rudimentary brick built BBQ in our private back garden where you can cook on the coals (mackerel grilled on the coals with salt and pepper is food for the gods - if you like fish!) Across the road from our front door is a path leading over the fields down a dip to the stream and up the other side to an ancient stone circle. You will need a good OS survey map which is useful anyway. Easy access to Isles of Scilly.
