Beautifully restored family friendly house near sandy beaches and La Rochelle

Updated: 22-Oct-2016
3 bedroom, 2 bathroom Charentais house Ideally positioned for exploring Charente Maritime

Les Deux Puits is a beautifully restored farmhouse, set in the Charente Maritime region (renowned for being the second most sunny part of France). The house can be found in Chambon, a typical French hamlet with beautiful areas for birdwatching, cycling and walking. The bakery delivers bread daily (not Wednesday) and the town of Surgeres, 5 miles to the east, has supermarkets, bars and restaurants, an indoor swimming pool and pretty river walks.

About the Owner

I have lived and worked in England, Taiwan, Pakistan and Mexico but I still love France the most! Chambon, the location of my gite, provides a quiet and friendly hamlet in which I can work and relax. I have converted a local barn into a studio in which I make ceramic sculptures, vessels and bowls. I return to the UK frequently to deliver my artwork to galleries and to see my son and daughter. I am very lucky to be surrounded by such beautiful countryside with delicious wine, cheese and French bread only minutes away!

We have had a lovely, relaxed week here at Les Deux Puits. it's so peaceful here, and the house had everything we needed. We shall miss the sunshine + the quiet + the daily delivery of fresh croissants!

Thanks so much. It'll truely be a holiday I won't forget. Your place is a great place to bring good company and relax and lose yourself in the French countryside.

Lovely stay, sorry to be going home! It's very quiet and so relaxing We enjoyed many days out in the region. La Rochelle, Ille d'Olern and the Petit Vilage and Petit Plage were fantastic.

Delightfully relaxing place with all you need

  • 5 of 5

Four of us had a fantastic break at this beautifully-converted barn in the middle of the French countryside.

We spent a lot more time actually at the accommodation itself than we'd ever spent anywhere else on holiday because it was such a relaxing place to be, with its quiet, peaceful garden area, pleasantly cool rooms and ideal climate - hot, but not too hot for sun-wary Brits.

The accommodation was of good quality, everything worked perfectly (especially the ever-hot showers) and when the gas ran out, Hazel changed the canister as soon as possible.

She was an inconspicuous but attentive host, lending us a map after we'd left ours in England, instantly bringing a pair of scissors absent from the cutlery drawer and helping us with her always accurate information about things to do. We were only sorry we'd not taken up her restaurant suggestion a little earlier in the holiday!

It is well situated for trips out, though you have to drive at least 20-30 minutes to reach places of real interest (the Petit Caprice restaurant is much nearer!). Ile d'Oleron, Ile de Re, La Rochelle, Green Venice, Rochefort, Saintes are all easy to visit, plus good sandy beaches, the best of which was Fouras, a lovely spot. Good supermarkets less than 10 minutes away.

We shall remember Hazel and her small property cluster with great fondness - and we have one of her lovely pottery pieces, a dish with a lizard, to remind us should we forget. Merci bien!

Lovely gite and area!

  • 5 of 5

Before we arrived at the gite Hazel had sent suggestions by email for days out and clear directions and a map to the gite. The gite was lovely; clean with everything you need for a relaxing holiday-the parasol was a real bonus in the 40 degrees of heat! It has a lovely garden, great for relaxing in after a hard day sightseeing! The BBQ was used regularly! The thickness of the gite's walls ensures the bedrooms stay cool even during the hottest weather. Hazel is an excellent host; giving us loads of suggestions for days out, even taking the time to draw us maps to get us there! Three out of four of us had never been to France before-we will be back! Thank you Hazel for contributing to a really great holiday - your gite is lovely!

Wonderful area, house and host

  • 5 of 5

My wife is disabled so we wanted ground floor accommodation. We had a helpful email exchange with the owner, Hazel, before booking. When we arrived we found Les Deux Puits even better then we imagined – spacious, clean and very well equipped – even a 13 amp English socket for those who had forgotten their adaptors!

Hazel was a generous host giving us fresh raspberries from her garden and a bottle of wine on arrival. She was very helpful in suggesting places to go. We thoroughly enjoyed Green Venice ( a”must do” if in the area), the “bus de Mer” in La Rochelle (a cheap way to tour the harbour and marina), a local restaurant (12.5 Euros for 3 courses including wine), as well as the aquarium, the naval dockyard in Rochefort, and the beach at Fouras.

We loved the local bread delivery system – put Euros and a note in the bag and hang it outside the night before – and the bread is in there the next morning.

A lovely area and accommodation – we hope to return one day.

Owner's Response: It was a pleasure to have you and Rosemary stay in Les Deux Puits. I am delighted that you used the list of websites I sent you to plan your trip so efficiently. I agree Le P'tit Caprice, my favourite restaurant, is excellent value for money and is only 10 minutes drive from Les Deux Puits. Lunch is a leisurely affair spent with the locals. I loved having your vintage citroen parked on my drive and thank you for letting me use it to promote the parking space attached to Les Deux Puits. I hope to welcome you back in the near future. Still lots to explore like the Roman amphitheatre and triumphal arch in Saintes; the distilleries in Cognac to name just a few. A bientot Hazel

Lovely rural retreat

  • 5 of 5

Thought it might be a bit of a risk taking our 19 and 17 year-old children and one of their partners to such a quiet rural location, however it proved a hit with all. The house is beautifully restored and provided plenty of space for the 5 of us. The two showers and wifi were a real bonus. Hazel was a well-informed, helpful and discreet host. Other members of our family rented the adjacent property and it proved to be a great place for an extended family holiday.

We found plenty to do, the seaside resort of Fouras was charming with a really traditional feel and a good selection of restaurants overlooking the beach. La Rochelle, an easy drive, was bustling and full of impressive buildings, an evening visit to the Aquarium was very atmospheric.. Further afield a tasting visit to Cognac and even an opportunity to watch local football in Niort.

I think that this property would suit families with children of all ages. Make sure you look around Hazel’s studio, her sculptures inspired by her family are very moving.

Peaceful stay in Chambon, ideal base to explore

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed very much the comfort of this lovely relaxing Gite. Spacious enough for two teenagers and both parents! Fab showers x 2, great kitchen for cooking when, you can't decide where to eat. Fresh bread delivered to the door. Peaches at the garden gate, sunshine in the gardens.Humming bird moths beautiful to watch on the lavender in the morning. Hazel is a discreet generous host even though our gite - one of three, shared Hazel 's drive we were not over looked and relaxed with ease. Easy drive to lots of locations. We enjoyed local cycling, rowing in Coulon, site seeing in la Rochelle and sun bathing in Fouras. We also travelled to lascaux for a great visit to lascaux 2 the reproduction. Beautiful sunflowers everywhere. Lots more to explore, looking forward to returning!

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your heart felt review :-) You sum up summer life, in Chambon, extremely well. So pleased you were here in time for the peaches. Thanks for providing the earl grey tea! Looking forward to your next visit when you can, perhaps, explore the beautiful architecture of Rochefort; the Roman triumphal arch and amphitheatre in Saintes; the quaint town and market in St Jean d'Angely to name but a few. You may even get to swim in the Charente http://www.plages-charente-maritime. Bonne Chance. A bientot Hazel xx

Had a wonderful relaxing break at Les Deux-Puits. Hazel the owner gave us a warm welcome with wine and a well filled information pack on the area.

The property was clean and well appointed with everything you could need for a trouble free break in a quiet location - daily fresh bread deliveries, easy access to many areas of beautiful countryside and Hazel's help and understanding of any requirements we may have had.

Our visits to La Rochelle, the beautiful towns on the Ile-de-Re , the beaches at Fouras and Chatelaillon-Plage made this an extremely enjoyable holiday.

Spent most of our evenings eating out in the well kept garden enjoying the sun till late.

Many thanks to Hazel for a lovely stay and for her help in ensuring we had a great holiday - would certainly recommend Les Deux- Puits to anybody planning a break in the area.

Owner's Response: Many thanks for your lovely review. There are still many places left for you to discover on your next trip, such as the delights of the Marais Poitevin. You can hire a boat and discover the beauty of the criss crossing canals or pay for a guide to do it all for you! Saintes, Cognac and the pretty town of St Jean d'Angeley all have their own charm and historic buildings to discover. Besides that:- the garden awaits you! A bientot.

From the Owner

Les Deux Puits was derelict when purchased - it was last used by the French Resistance Fighters in World War Two - but it was immediately obvious it had wonderful potential. It took 17 years to restore it to its original, rustic charm and it has been my home since 2008. I have just completed an apartment for myself above my workshop in the barn so I can offer Les Deux Puits as a holiday home. The reasons why we bought Les Deux Puits: my family fell in love with La Rochelle, only a 30 minutes' drive away. It is situated in the second sunniest part of France. It is easily accessible, with La Rochelle airport only a 35 minute drive, the ferry port of St Malo a manageable four-hour drive and the Eurostar now running from St Pancras to La Rochelle/Surgeres.

30 minutes drive to a long sandy beach with sailing school, crazy golf and water park at Chatelaillon Plage. 25 minutes drive to the popular, sandy beach at Les Minimes in La Rochelle with rock pools and pretty park on the headland. 35 minutes drive to sandy beaches in Fouras overlooked by the old fort and featuring a monument to Napoleon's final journey from France.

There are very reasonably priced direct flights to La Rochelle from London, Stansted and Dublin with Ryan Air; Southampton, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester with Flybe; Edinburgh and Leeds with Jet2; London, Gatwick and Bristol with Easyjet and Cork with AerArann. The gite is 1.5 hours motorway drive from Bordeaux airport. Europcar, Hertz or Budget can arrange hire cars from either airport.

The town of Surgeres, 5 miles to the east, has supermarkets, bars and restaurants, an indoor swimming pool and pretty river walks. Aigrefeuille d'Aunis, 5 miles to the west, has an outdoor market twice a week selling fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. It also has an outdoor swimming pool and a landscaped lake. Historic La Rochelle is only 25 minutes drive away.

Further Details:

The village of Chambon Bourg has an historic church and cemetery. Les Deux Puits was used by the French Resistance during the war. The separate village of Chambon-Gare, 2 miles to the south has a post office. Flat country lanes fan out from Chambon, providing quiet and safe walking and cycling routes. The tall hedgerows lining the lanes harbour many species of songbirds. Buzzards, harriers, kites and owls are frequent visitors. Deer and hares are also to be seen. One walk that we enjoy will take you through the avenue of trees in the grounds of the Maison de Repos (a convalescent home) at nearby Marlonges, then through the village of Marlonges and back home. During June and July many of the fields surrounding Chambon are full of sunflowers. A 25 minute drive west will take you to La Rochelle with its historic medieval towers guarding the entrance to the beautiful Old Port. The choice of excellent places to eat and drink is endless. Street entertainments around the harbour every night during the summer make for a pleasant after dinner stroll. At the nearby modern marina complex of Les Minimes can be found many museums and a small beach. The famous Aquarium is located near the old port. Other beaches can be found to the south of La Rochelle at Chatelaillon Plage and Fouras, both of which are a similar journey time from the farmhouse.

From the Owner

Les Deux Puits is in the heart of the countryside with beautiful poppy fields in June and fields full of sunflowers in July. The immediate area is very flat so walking and cycling are very pleasurable. Hare, deer, buzzards, black redstarts, linnets, swallows, swifts, hoopoes, doves are frequent visitors. At present I have a linnet nesting in the bay hedge, a black redstart in the barn and a dove on top of the telegraph pole!
