About the property

House in Oms, Nr. Ceret, Pyrenees Orientales, Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Situated in unbelievably beautiful countryside, this charming Catalan style house is set in an acre of wooded garden, at an altitude of 500 metres. Facing South, it has magnificent views of the Franco-Spanish border and the Alberes mountains. A 5 min. walk takes you to the old picturesque village of Oms, with a lovely church, a Post Office in the Mairie, and Mme. Doutre’s bar, and shop which sells everything! Try the local cured hams and salamis, and pick up hot croissants and baguettes for breakfast, to enjoy on the terrace overlooking the mountain pass into Spain. Join the locals for a game of boules in the village square, and enjoy the wonderful walks.

About Joan Higgs

I am an Irish national, retired from working overseas with US embassy. This is a privately owned holiday home which is available for rental as I am currently spending most of my time in London.

Why Joan Higgs chose Oms

Beautiful location, unspoilt, and rich in history. Easy access to adjoining Spain, where one can enjoy breakfast, and be back home for lunch! Calm and peaceful surroundings, and excellent restaurants in nearby Thuir. Local wine now excellent, and costing so little!

A perfect home from home

  • 5 of 5

We returned again to this most idilic part of the world in September 2016. The cottage gives us all that we are looking for in a holiday, peace, tranquility and comfort. The view from the varander is superb and is an attraction in itself. The location is perfect with access to larger towns and supermarkets a short drive away. The owner, Joan, keeps the cottage well maintained and spotlessly clean and is always contactable to ensure your stay meets with your expectations. We have stayed at the property for several years now, and have just booked a return trip in September this year. I would encourage anyone to book this most special property and location and I am sure that one visit will leave you wanting to return.

Lovely villa , lovely setting

  • 5 of 5

Secluded and private villa , yet with easy access to surrounding towns in about 25 mins. The villa is spacious , comfortable , and very clean. The views were stunning with enough shade on terrace if required . ( 38 degrees on the day we arrived ) The pretty garden at the rear , the paved area to the side , and the long private drive all help to make this villa a perfect place to relax. Joan rang us a couple of times to make sure we had settled in , which was very kind of her .Would have no hesitation in recommending this property .

Quaint little cottage, with a special charm

  • 5 of 5

Pretty little cottage, well equipped and homely. Spotlessly clean, and the owner Joan Higgs was in touch regularly to ensure the property met our expectations. Internet provided, which is a bonus. Whilst the village does not boast any restaurants, there are a plethora in Ceret and surrounding villages. Views are stupendous, and photos do not do it justice. A great place to unwind and try your hand at cooking delicious sardines. Oodles of walks. If you go in May there is wonderful bird life. (Actually got fed up with hoopoes) as if!! One May we had a pair of Golden Oriels which made the trip. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend. Like us, once visited you will always have a longing to return.

Tranquility, Seclusion, Beautiful Views

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for three weeks in June 2013 and thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. We've long loved this part of France, it being an area of outstanding beauty in which the house fits perfectly. It's an attractive, comfortable and well equipped home that sits in a large, private garden where one can relax quietly in the shade of the hot sunshine, watching and listening to the wildlife - including a pair of golden orioles when we were there - and admire the fabulous mountain views towards the Spanish border.

The nearest town of any size is Céret which, although a half-hour drive away, is a lovely, ancient place with several excellent restaurants, and the journey there and back, through lovely scenery, never seemed too long.

Drive to the west or south - into the Pyrenees - or enjoy a walk on one of the local footpaths, and the views will take your breath away.

Joan, the owner of the house, is very helpful and friendly, and telephoned us during our stay to ensure that all was well (which, of course, it was).

Our holiday went all too quickly, and we were very sorry to leave.

A little piece of heaven on earth.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Joan's Villa for two glorious weeks in July. The house itself is quite beautiful and tastefully decorated with views overlooking the Alberes Mountains and looking down to the valley below to can see the village of Ceret, and look harder to see the road over the mountain into Spain. We were also lucky to be there for Bastille day when Ceret celebrates with a very Spanish theme, all said it's delightful village at any time. The location is a great place to explore from and to visit the local Vineyards and towns throughout the area. Terry and Anne Devlin and June Neill.
