About Gwen Shillaker

I was borne in Wiltshire but work frequently in Spain and my wife and family live there. This was bought as our seaside holiday home.

Why Gwen Shillaker chose Wiltshire

I am a local person born and brought up in Corsham where most of my family still live.

I now live and work in London but spend as much time as possible in Wiltshire.

For me Wiltshire is a beautiful area where I can relax.

What makes this cottage unique

Biddestone is an ideal base for visiting a variety of places of interest.

The village itself has all the charm of a Corswold village but without the commercialisation.

Notes on accommodation: Wellside Cottage has a light, spacious living area, with comfortable seating and a pleasant dining area, a small study leads off to the left of the living area and the kitchen is to the right. Access to the secluded garden is from the kitchen through a stable door. A narrow staircase leads upstairs to 3 bedrooms and a bathroom . Well End is a smaller cottage which was fully refurbished by the end of June 2013. There are 2 bedrooms which offer very comfortable accommodation for 3 or 4 guests. Both cottages are equally well appointed. Travel Cot and High Chair available if required. Well End is also available for longer stays and would be ideal for anyone working temporarily in the area, house hunting or awaiting completion of purchase on a house. Outside: Wellside has enclosed garden with patio, table and four chairs. The decking area has two teak loungers. Cushions for patio chair and loungers are stored in the deck box in the garden shed. A barbecue is available. Many garden games, activities and a swing are also stored in the shed. There are often cows in the field behind the cottage.

Best holiday cottage ever!

  • 5 of 5

We were greeted very warmly by Gwen and shown into the delightful cottage. It was a real treat to have cookies, fruit, milk and fresh flowers provided when we arrived. The cottage and garden are simply beautiful, maintained to a high standard and very clean. The finishing touches are excellent. The cottage is very well provisioned with anything you could possibly need; from a pencil sharpener, pegs, books, dvd's, games to tea bags, coffee, bubble bath, shampoo and much more. The beds were extremely comfortable, with good quality bedding and towels.

The village and surrounding area is beautiful and we had two weeks of glorious weather exploring the Cotswolds on foot, by bike and car. The Biddestone Tennis Club were very friendly and allowed us to join in their social tennis sessions and use their courts at other times.

We would definitely recommend this cottage to family and friends and hope to return in the future. We would like to say a huge thank you to Gwen for everything she did to help make our holiday so amazing!

Lovely, wonderful cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This was absolutely the most darling cottage in a wonderful village! Gwen - the caretaker - was sweet and accommodating. The cottage was spotless and had many amenities that made my stay easy and pleasant. Everything was better than advertised. The garden was gorgeous and relaxing to sit and have a glass of wine at the end of the day.

I highly recommend this property and would definitely stay here again! Thank you, Gwen!

Disappointing Stay, Wouldn't Recommend

  • 1 of 5

The Cottage was quaint but the general upkeep of the property was terrible. The lights throughout the property were temperamental at best if they worked at all. To the point we had to have electricians in the cottage for two full days meaning we couldn't use the Kitchen or Bathroom during this time. When speaking to the owner she suggested we would be given some form of a discount for the inconvenience and disruption caused during our holiday stay. However when we followed up about this Gwen the host was extremely rude.

We were told this was a three bedroom cottage which it was but one of the beds couldn't be slept in because it was in such a bad state and the other two were very uncomfortable. The bedding was terrible, in the middle of winter we would expect blankets to keep us warm but were supplied with feather duvets that had over half the feathers missing. The fitted sheets did not fit the beds, they were too small. The towels supplied were like sandpaper.

The bathroom fan did not work to the point where we had to wipe the entire bathroom down after every shower as the walls were dripping. The side of the bath was also hanging off for our entire stay.

All in all the host was rude, we were put out by maintenance during our stay, the beds were terrible and we would definitely not be staying here again or recommending it to anyone.

Owner's Response: Rosamunde Hanney booked the cottage 11 months in advance from 13th December until 13th January and during the following months we exchanged a lot of very pleasant e mails as she had lived near to us before emigrating to Australia. They were offered a very much reduced price for a long booking. As the booking was made early my plans changed as we were invited to spend Christmas with our son. I explained this and the housekeeper made sure the cottage was completely ready for them. Extra blankets were supplied as the Hanneys were coming from summer in Australia to winter in England. The beds have pocket sprung mattresses. The housekeeper usually goes in each week to change the beds and towels and to clean. As this would have been Boxing Day I asked Rosamunde if she would mind changing the beds. She agreed and even offered to wash the sheets and towels. After their first week I received an e mail from Rosamunde telling me they loved the cottage and it was perfect for them. I returned home on the 30th December and received an e mail from Rosamunde telling me the sheets would not fit the beds. I couldn't think how that could happen as we have standard sizes but immediately took over replacements. Rosamunde e mailed me a few days later to say a couple of bulbs had blown so I asked the maintenance man to replace them. On further investigation it became apparent that there was an electrical problem which the maintenance man thought should be dealt with as soon as possible. We do have an up to date inspection certificate. I apologised profusely for any disturbance and the Hanneys arranged to visit old friends whilst the work was in progress. Our bedding and towels are all hotel quality and everything is sent to the laundry to ensure cleanliness. I always endeavour to be helpful to guest and am never rude as the guest book and other reviews reflect. This is the first time in 4 years that anyone has complained. The Hanneys were given a refund for the disturbance caused by the electrical work.

Stunning home from home

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful holiday at Wellside. There was absolutely everything that you could need, quality appliances and a gorgeous garden backing on to a field. We had cows in the field on more than one occasion and even saw bats in the evening! Top that off with comfy beds, quality bedding and light bright and airy rooms it really is a home from home.

Gwen our lovely hostess made sure that we had everything that we needed and was readily available if we had any problems (which thankfully we didn't). We can't recommended this cottage highly enough and would definitely return in the future.
