About Jane Shemilt

We have happily bought up our family of five children in the beautiful Old Rectory which was our family home for fifteen years while we worked as doctors in Bristol; we hope you will also enjoy this wonderful friendly family house and fantastic grounds.

There is something for everyone, space to run around play tennis, croquet or swim,or find a secluded spot in our landscaped gardens to look at the view read or relax in the peace and quiet.

Jane Shemilt purchased this house in 1995

Why Jane Shemilt chose Oldbury-on-Severn

We bought the Old Rectory from the church,as we were looking for a lovely house in a garden to give our children the space to explore and grow in beautiful surroundings. While being peaceful (the only sounds at night are owls, and during the day there are hovering buzzards, woodpeckers in our huge hornbeam trees and thrushes on the lawn) we are yet only half an hour from Bristol and and forty minutes from the iconic attractions of Bath.

The house is on the edge of an award winning village, which has a friendly pub selling delicious home-made food two minutes down the hill.

Thornbury castle is ten minutes away for fine dining, and there is a magnificent golf course open to all.

What makes this house unique

The Old Rectory retains all the unique features of its Victorian origins solidly built in 1860 to attract the best vicar at the time, with servants bells, shutters, working open fires in each room and magnificent views from all the windows. There is much to do on site with an astroturf tennis court and a heated swimming pool in the orchard;croquet books, games and a library of DVDs and videos ensure you will never be bored! it is uniquely positioned in peaceful country side on the banks of the River Severn with walks from the front gate and yet within easy distance of the lovely villages of the Cotswolds, the Brecon Beacons, the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean no more than 40 minutes away.

Tennis lessons, baby sitting and in house catering can all be arranged.

Peace and space with enough to do for everyone

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with our young adult sons who loved the tennis court. They managed to play even in-between rain showers. The views and sense of space both inside and outside the property made for an especially relaxing stay. The kitchen is very well equipped and we hosted a Sunday lunch in the lovely dining room with ease and making good use of the Aga. We made use of the excellent DVD collection and the games cupboard. We had taken our own books but spotted many good reads in the house.

Locally the walks and the pubs were excellent. Although it was very muddy the boot room and utility by the back door meant that we could keep the rest of the house clean. Our small dog got used to going straight to the sink for a rinse.

We can imagine that in the summer the pool would add even more delight to any holiday in this wonderful house.

Owner's Response: It was wonderful to meet Katie and her family at the start of their weekend; I am thrilled they enjoyed their time at The Old Rectory and were able to make the most of the house and garden despite the unreliable weather. The beauty of the astroturf tennis court is that it can be used in all weathers and I'm so pleased the keen tennis players of the family were able to play. It's lovely to hear that the Aga came into its own, as did the boot room and that the dog felt at home too! You are right, in the summer season the heated pool is a great draw - families spend all day between swimming and tennis and barbecue! Come back soon!

Wonderful house and gardens in a quiet lication

  • 5 of 5

I booked The Rectory to celebtate special birthdays with family and friends and a wonderful time was had by all. It is a a large house but with a homely feel about it and we loved the home cooked family meals in the kitchen. We did spend most time in the beautiful gardens playing tennis til dusk swimming and a couple of BBQs and Table tennis when it got dark! The four year old loved running around and playing on the swing and said it was perfect! The only thing I would have added was a lounger by the pool for the sunny days.

The owner Jane is most helpful and

I would certainly recommend for a mixed age group holiday.

Owner's Response: Thank you for this wonderful review-we cant ask for better than perfect! We love that the house and garden provided so much for everyone of all ages and that the pool, tennis court, gardens and table tennis were used to the maximum by all. BBQ's on warm evenings in the peaceful surroundings add to the magic and we are sopleased you had lovely weather. Sun loungers coming up! Guests have told me how much they enjoy meals at the table, chairs and bench that live by the swimming pool and love relaxing on the mown and sloping grass surrounding the pool on the rugs we provide but we had planned to add sun loungers to the mix so thanks for that great suggestion, now in hand.

Wonderful House

  • 5 of 5

We spent a family birthday weekend here and it was wonderful. The house has plenty of space, is beautifully maintained and lovely in every way. The vast garden is great not only for children but adults too. The swimming pool is a good size and was always at a very pleasing temperature. The tennis court is another great feature and was almost as well used by us as the pool. The Anchor pub is just a short walk. It has a good beer garden and serves reasonable food. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful House And Grounds

  • 5 of 5

We spent a long weekend at the Old Rectory to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary with our family - ten of us with ages ranging from 3 to 75. We had a wonderful time making full use of the lovely house, extensive grounds, swimming pool and tennis court. Everything we needed was provided and Jane was very helpful particularly in answering our many questions. It was such a happy celebration in a perfect setting that the family would love to do it again! We would have no hesitation in recommending the Old Rectory.

Lovely house and large garden for celebration

  • 5 of 5

A perfect location for family celebration of 3 generations aged 2 - 73 for a 40th birthday! Very friendly and helpful owners who helped to make our stay happy and relaxed. The grandchildren adored the large garden, and especially a slightly belated Easter egg hunt! Plenty of room inside the house for the different generations to spread out when needed! Great to have the AGA too and memorable meals were produced and enjoyed! We hope we may return one day!
