Overview

About the property

Cottage in Stockland, Honiton, Devon, England - Stunning Hilltop Views, 20 Minute Drive To Jurassic Coast Beaches, Help to Feed the Animals.

A recently converted cottage in the beautiful East Devon countryside. The cottage is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The cottage makes the most of the stunning views from our hill top position. Great for walking and exploring the Blackdown Hills. The view from the bedrooms and the large private deck are really special.

Finished to a high standard, with every detail carefully thought out. We've tried to be as environmentally friendly as possible, installing solar panels to provide hot water, using responsibly sourced wood for the windows and doors made by a local craftsman, and using eco friendly paints and finishings wherever possible.

About Robert Millington

We always wanted to raise our own meat and grow our own fruit and veg, and to have a few more trees than big red buses to look at, so we're really pleased to have made the move from the big smoke

In our first year here, we did up the house and converted the old dairy into the lovely holiday cottage it now is. Now that the building work is over, we can concentrate on developing the smallholding to provide as much of our own food and fuel as possible.

We have two young children, so know all about the great local family attractions, and we're happy to help with information if you need it.

We love the slower pace of life, the great local food, and the friendly vibe in East Devon, and we hope we can share some of this great way of life with our visitors.

Why Robert Millington chose East Devon

We love the slower pace of life, the great local food, and the friendly vibe in East Devon, and we hope we can share some of our bit of heaven with our guests.

We chose a place that is easy enough to get to for our friends and family, but with the peace and quiet that comes with our lovely rural location. A short 20 minute hop to the beach too where you can hunt for fossils along the Jurassic Coast, and life is complete!

Stockland village is really active, with events running all year. Just let us know if you would like to find out what's happening locally.

What makes this cottage unique

Easy access to the Jurassic coast beaches, with Lyme Regis just 20 minutes away. All sorts of great foodie experiences to be had, with a plethora of farmers markets, great restaurants and pubs nearby.

You're welcome to help us feed the animals and collect the chicken and duck eggs each morning, and to roam around our field and woodland looking for the amazing wildlife. Our woodland backs on to the common land, with footpaths to explore. We can show you the best spot for badger watching, where you'll also see deer, owls and other great wildlife.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We (2 couples) stayed at the cottage for 4 nights and it was excellent. You need to have a car, given its location, but it is an easy drive to many coastal towns (Lyme Regis, Beer, Sidmouth etc). The cottage is very well equipped, clean and the shower (downstairs) / bath (upstairs) worked well for our needs. There is a collection of books, games and DVDS. The outdoor seating is great also. We appreciated the responsiveness when making the booking.

Notes:
Notes on accommodation: Golden Square Cottage was recently converted from an old dairy. We designed the cottage to make the most of the amazing views from our hill top position. We run a smallholding, so you are welcome to spend some time with us helping to feed the animals and collect the eggs. We can show you where to go to watch the badgers at the end of our woods, and give you books to read all about the amazing wildlife on our doorstep. Swallows nest in the barn next to the cottage, and you can enjoy watching our four rare breed pigs in the paddock below the orchard. Outside: A large private deck with wooden table and chairs and a parasol ensure you can make the most of the amazing views and beautiful setting. A BBQ is provided, along with a home made picnic bench in the orchard below the deck. Enjoy exploring our woodlands and the common land that adjoins our farm, where you can look out for the deer, badgers and owls that live there. By walking across the field with our little flock of Shetland and Southdown sheep, you can reach a stile that leads into our woods. From there you can join up with a fairytale-like footpath leading down a small gully crisscrossed with pretty wooden bridges - a really idillic spot. The footpath leads down towards the Stockland turbaries, a large area of common land that has some unique habitats to explore. It's a nature loves paradise - endless opportunities for exploring, playing, climbing trees and hunting for bugs and other wildlife. Utility Room: Hoover, ironing board, iron, high chair, children's toys, clothes drier and pegs, cleaning equipment. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen and towels provided. Luxurious throws and blankets. The cottage is cleaned and towels and linen changed weekly.

Snug well equipped cottage with lovely views

  • 4 of 5

Golden Square Cottage is a well renovated and equipped cottage tucked in alongside a road that runs off Stockland Hill, giving lovely views over the surrounding countryside. It has been well insulated and draughtproofed, which we appreciated as Storm Aileen lashed the Devon coast and hinterland with wind and rain in early September '17. The renovation has been done with taste and flair, and has kept the character of this little place intact. There is a generously sized woodburner, central heating and solar/ thermal, so you should never be without some form of heating/hot water/power. The downstairs is comfortable open plan, and there are two snug bedrooms upstairs. It is a great asset having both a downstairs shower/wc and upstairs bathroom & wc. For those who like eating outside, the deck area with barbecue is a good plus for warmer weather. The owners and their smallholding are adjacent, with sheep grazing the fields and pigs rootling in the orchard. Rob was a solicitous host and effected tweaks to heating on request and pointed us at the log store for top ups.

Bar a morning and an evening local rush hour when cars pass a bit more frequently, it is quiet, especially at night as owls hoot and the wind rustles the nearby oak tree. There are good walks in the immediate locality and the cottage brochure basket is stuffed with info on all the local tourist attractions. So you should never lack for a destination to go out and explore, whatever the weather.

Wonderful stay at Golden Square

  • 5 of 5

Dear Rob and Kath,

We are back home now, slowly acclimating to post-holiday reality. To say that we miss Golden Square would be an understatement.

Our stay was wonderful. We could not have wished for a more pleasant accommodation. The cottage was perfectly planned and very comfortable. The views across the countryside were stunningly beautiful. But I think most importantly, we felt quite "at home" at Golden Square -- of course, lambs, sheep, and chickens are not part of our stateside landscape, but their presence added so much to our experience. Vincent, the cat, played a special role, reminding us of our own cats at home and behaving in a most usual (and enjoyable!) feline manner.

The location was perfect for us. Although we made two trips to the coast, we found most of our activity centered on walking the many trails in the area. The diverse landscape made each walk different, opening up a broader understanding of the east Devon countryside. The Royal Oak farm shop was a true bonus. We were able to self-cater largely by walking down the road and buying eggs and farm-prepared meals there. We also went to tea twice at Royal Oak which was Diane's favorite experience during our entire holiday.

We can't thank you enough for the experience and we congratulate you on creating a very special place in Devon.

Peaceful countryside retreat

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage. Everything we needed was available to us and we found the owners to be very friendly and welcoming.

The cottage is located in a beautiful setting with some lovely views and good walks. We felt that the interior was clean and decorated very well, giving a homely yet fresh feeling.

All in all we would not only recommend this cottage, we would definately stay again. Thank you for making our trip so comfortable.

Lovely tranquil cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage easy to locate, it is in an elevated position with beautiful country views. There was plenty of space in and outside of the cottage, and also Rob's smallholding to explore. the cottage was spotless and very warm, definitely needed on wet cold February nights. Rob and his wife were very friendly hosts with those extra little touches that were greatly appreciated, especially late on a Sunday after a long drive!
