Delightful 18th Century Cottage With Stunning Views

Bedrooms 2
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

About the property

Cottage above Low Row, Swaledale, Yorkshire, England - Peaceful Hillside Location, Easy Access to Fantastic Moorland Walks

A Grade II listed, two bedroom, converted lead miner's cottage in the heart of Swaledale, Sandpiper is full of character. It is welcoming, cosy and has been recently upgraded and substantially refurbished. It is ideally located for walking, opening directly on to moorland with the Coast to Coast Path nearby and is perfect for exploring the Dales or just relaxing and admiring the stunning views up and down the dale from the terrace. It sits above the village of Low Row and its Punch Bowl Inn, an excellent pub and restaurant, just half a mile away. It is 4 miles from Reeth, which has a local museum, pottery, tea rooms and gift shops. Sandpiper is tastefully furnished and decorated to a very high standard with original works of art. TV/DVD, phone and broadband are provided and there is a Bose music player. There is a comfortable living room with a brand new, very comfy, sofa and wood burning stove, all new bedroom furniture including a luxury king-size bed and a well equipped kitchen with microwave, food processor and bread-maker. The main bedroom has a luxury king sized bed and is newly carpeted.

Swaledale is the most enchanting of all the dales, with lush wild flower meadows and heather topped moors. It has a fascinating industrial heritage; Sandpiper is situated a short walk from a preserved 19th century smelting mill.

One well behaved dog welcome.

Please note: in low season we normally take bookings for a minimum of three nights at weekends, from Friday to Monday morning. In high season minimum stay is one week.

No smoking.

About Judith Bell

Although our professional lives keep us in London for the time being we are both from the North East and have been coming to Swaledale all our lives. There is nowhere in the world more tranquil, a perfect retreat from urban life. We are passionate about walking and cycling, though the hill up from the village presents a bit of a challenge on a bike. We bought Sandpiper to have a base in Swaledale from which we can enjoy all that the locality offers and to keep ourselves rooted in the north! We visit as often as can and have added many personal touches. We love the fact that others can also enjoy Sandpiper and take great pleasure in offering a cottage that our guests want to return to.

Notes on accommodation: Sandpiper is spacious yet cosy. It has been converted to maximise the space and light and has a welcoming, relaxed feel. Purchased by the current owners in April 2012 Sandpiper has recently been substantially refurbished and is gradually being refurnished with a view to enhancing the overall quality and ambience of the cottage. There is a new comfy sofa, new bedroom furniture and new super warm ceramic core radiators. The kitchen has everything you could need, including a food processor and a bread maker (set it to bake overnight and wake up to freshly bread for breakfast!). Wooden floors and staircase lead to a mezzanine bedroom which has a glass balustrade allowing uninterrupted views down the dale from the luxury king size bed. The owners have added artwork (mostly by artists with a feel for the locality) and personal touches and visit frequently, ensuring that high standards are maintained. Children very welcome, a travel cot is available. Feedback from guests is appreciated. Outside: South facing terrace with stunning views up and down the dale. There is outdoor furniture and barbecue. Parking behind the cottage. Sheep graze outside the kitchen window. From the cottage there are wonderful walks in all directions. The moorland situation is perfect for walkers who want to get straight out onto the hills. Two sledges are provided for when it snows. Cleaning / Towels / Linen / Maid service: All bed linen and towels are included and changed weekly. Other: The light and airy dining room, adjacent to the kitchen has stunning views down the dale.

Absolute PERFECTION!!!

  • 5 of 5

For several years prior to 2015, we had stayed at the nearby "Gastro-Pub", as we knew we loved the peace, tranquility and genuine awe-inspiring beauty of Swaledale. Discovering the delights of self-catering for the first time, and by sheer good fortune choosing Sandpiper, the whole experience was a revelation! Compared to the a room in the pub, at Sandpiper we had a great deal more space and infinitely better facilities and all for approx. half the price!!!. This cosy little cottage was our idea of perfection. The high standard of everything in it,from the fully fitted kitchen to the immaculately clean bed and bathroom linen made it feel, genuinely like it was a "Home from Home".To go off to sleep with just the sound of sheep and curlews for "company" was bliss. Having one's own small patio area (and accompanying furniture) made it better than anywhere else we had ever found in 5 or 6 previous visits to Swaledale, and so with just a minimum of planning (and effort) we were able to enjoy cream teas, a quiet drink and an evening meal, quite literally outside our own front door and to enjoy the most perfect of views, in what felt almost "selfish" isloation. Furthermore ,whilst being of an age(57) and therefore able to exist for more than 5 seconds without checking Facebook/Twitter etc etc (but also knowing that mobile phone reception is,in effect, non-existant in Swaledale) it was a real "plus" to have access to free and very efficient Wi-Fi, as well as free use (to UK landline numbers) of a good old BT phone (brilliant for the peace of mind that comes with being able to give that number to neighbours looking after our actual home, back in so called civilisation !)

Also, whilst Sandpiper welcomes dogs, we do not currently have one, but I can vouch for the fact that there was no residual "doggy" -type smell whatsoever.

In summary, after holidaying together for well over 20 years, in this country and abroad,Diane and I agreed this was THE best holiday we have ever had.

So much so, and because Sandpiper was just so cosy, (and because we cannot contemplate leaving it another year before returning) we will not,as we have in recent years "hibernated" from November to March, but will instead be booking a week within that timeframe, to savour a doubtless different looking and feeling, but still "jaw=droppingly" gorgeous Swaledale!

I am not a big one for completing Internet Reviews, & quite honestly this has taken me ages to type, but Sandpiper is Perfection !

This was our second visit to Sandpiper and it won't be our last. We are attracted by the fantastic location and being able to start many walks literally from the doorstep. Our black Lab Monty is in doggy heaven chasing the rabbits. The cottage is so warm and cosy especially when the fire is roaring and it does not matter what the weather is doing outside. The cottage is very well equipped and is very tastefully decorated with many works of local art on display. If you don't fancy cooking there are a number of Gastropubs within a short drive and the local one in in Low Row is only a 10 minute walk (although it does take a bit longer getting back up hill after a pint or two!) we love Swaledale and Sandpiper is the perfect spot to explore this beautiful valley.

Perfect Yorkshire Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Sandpiper Cottage is the perfect cosy retreat in which to rest, relax and unwind. We have just enjoyed our third stay and enjoy it more each time that we return. The location is absolutely wonderful - on the hillside, surrounded by beautiful countryside and yet close to a small village and within easy reach of well-stocked local shops run by friendly people. The photographs and description of the cottage do not quite do it justice and the owners are continually adding little extra home comforts. The bed is the most comfortable one we have ever slept in and we love to wake up in the morning and look out over the hills at the rising sun. In the evening we enjoy snuggling in front of the cosy fuel burning stove. The cottage is always warm even in the middle of winter - a lovely place to return to after a day of walking on the hills.

The owners and caretaker are always available if needed and the cottage has always been spotlessly clean on arrival, with the stove made up ready to light and milk, tea and biscuits thoughtfully provided.

If you can manage to drag yourself away from the cosy stove and wonderful views from the windows there are many beautiful local walks starting from the cottage door. The owners provide laminated local walks of varying lengths and a whole folder of guide books and leaflets. There are many interesting local towns and villages to visit and the farmer's markets with their delicious local produce are an absolute must!

We cannot recommend Sandpiper too highly and are looking forward to returning for our fourth stay in October!
