About Peter Chamberlain

I fell in love with Italy when I first visited it at the age 21. Fifty years later the love affair is just as intense - just better informed. In the intervening years I pursued a career as a UK based naval architect morphing into a consultant advising international clients on the development of advanced technology systems and the management of change. In all the years of international travel Italy remained firmly in my mind and was the destination of choice for short holidays. When it came to planning for retirement the idea of living in Italy became irresistible. After much searching my wife and I found our dream home, sold our London flat, and moved to live here full time. It was a good decision.

Peter Chamberlain purchased this house in 2003

Why Peter Chamberlain chose Perugia area

Umbria is often described as the green heart of Italy. The winter rains top-up the aquifers that keep the countryside green throughout the year and sustain the agriculture in the valley of the Tiber. Winters are mild and mercifully brief; summer days are long, sunny and hot – that is when the pool is really appreciated. We enjoy the glorious scenery, the nearby gentle, tree-clad hills, and the distant views of the mountainous Apennines.

From here it is easy to reach the major cultural centres such as Rome and Florence, to drive to the sandy coasts of the Adriatic or Tyrrhenian seas, or to explore the many delights of the towns and valleys closer to home.

What makes this house unique

We spent the first years here extensively modernising our property. We turned a house used for summer holidays into a comfortable year-round home and installed a large swimming pool. I have spent many hours developing the estate with the help of my supportive neighbours: tending the vineyard and making and marketing our own brand of Pinot Grigio wine; planting new olive-groves and marketing our own extra virgin olive oil; tending a plantation of black walnut trees; and revitalising the old woodlands. Hard physical work but the results are very rewarding to see – and in the process I have become adept in driving a tracked tractor with all its varied attachments.

Guestbook comments from the manager

“...The conversations through mail and the day of arrival by phone, were more than hospital and pleasant. Once we arrived we were overwhelmed by the beauty and the well kept garden in Italian Style. The house with a lot of space and a perfect spacious kitchen were even more a pleasant surprise. The house is complete with a personal touch. The surroundings, with a vineyard, olive garden and all kinds of fruit trees made us feel enormously privileged to be there…[We] fell in love and need to come back!"

“We are very happy to find your house. We had a wonderful week there. I'm sure we return back one day”

“We had a fantastic holiday… thank you for being a wonderful and generous host … your property is one of the best we have ever stayed in and the pool and the views were stunning. I miss my morning coffee on the roof terrace! It far exceeded our expectations and as we all have a keen interest in wine, we thoroughly enjoyed the tour you gave us of your vineyard and wine making...”

A beautifulhouse with a wonderful pool in a gorgeous setting

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous holiday. The house was perfect; thank you so much. Exactly the right size for us with just the right configuration of beautiful, and beautifully proportioned rooms and a huge choice of elegant terraces. We loved the Modigliani print in our bedroom, and the views in two directions of stunning landscape - perfect. And, of course, the setting of Pai Faena is spectacular. The superb, expansive, elegant swimming pool, with its missing wall with the infinite revelation of Umbrian country side took my breath away every time I swam (at least 10 times a day - we let the youth do the touring; why stir one's elderly bones from paradise?)

(We have owned a pool, in Texas, and borrowed or rented many more over the years. I have never encountered one so effortlessly clean. It was an inspired architectural decision to make an expansive level for it away from the trees - and thereby give the swimmer a perspective of the beautiful olives and pines and cypresses when one's eye wants to wander from the stunning long distance. No leaves; almost no bugs; perfect tranquility and exercise so gent!e and alluring that I can get fit while my daughter and her husband pound their sweaty and exhausting way around the hills on professionals' bicycles.)

It was a great pleasure to meet you and Anna and your delightful and diverse family. I enjoyed our conversations very much, always interesting and stimulating. I hope we meet up again.

Wonderful stay at villa-farmhouse

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at villa-farmhouse Pai Faena, very suitable for 2 families, with privacy as the bedrooms are located first and second floor.

Great kitchen, well equipped, with a large family table outside, we used for every meal.

The infinity pool is a great joy for both adults and kids. Well maintained by Peter. Surrounded by yards with olives and grapes.

Nearby is the Monte Castello di Vibio, a lovely village, with a bakery, a nice square with great view and a little cafe to get an italian espresso.

In this village, we have had a splendid dinner at Il Grottino di Zio Toto, a restaurant recommended by Peter. Well, we can recommend it too.

The nearest town is Todi, lovely, built on a hill, a nice walk up to the centre square, a great ice-cream store halfway up.

Other towns, like Orvieto, Perugia, Assissi are just a 40-45 min drive.

Have a good time!

Idyllic Umbrian retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Peter’s beautiful home. From the moment we arrived, Peter was the perfect host and thought of everything. He was there to greet us and to show us around the house and grounds and had left food and drink which saved us from doing a food shop on the first day.

The property is a true gem. The house is large, offering bags of space even for a large group, and all rooms are extremely tastefully furnished and decorated, with a well-equipped kitchen too. Every morning and evening we enjoyed the stunning views from the terrace over a coffee, or more often something a little stronger! The pool is a great size, with an infinity edge blending into the Umbrian hills, and was maintained by Peter himself who checked it a couple of times a day. The location of the house is ideal, less than a 45-minute drive from Perugia Airport, and well-placed for visits to the magnificent town of Todi and the quaint hill-town of Monte Castello di Vibio which is just up the road, yet with the benefit of complete tranquility. There is a huge amount to see within a hour or so’s drive and Peter has a helpful pack of recommendations (sightseeing and gastronomic!). One of the highlights for our two boys was Peter’s tractor tour of the vineyards and, for us, his guide to wine-making.

We could not fault this place and will definitely return.

Owner's Response: Dear Felicity, Thank you very much for your kind words, they are much appreciated as they show me that my efforts are achieving what I set out to do, namely to give my guests a holiday they enjoy will recall with fond memories. Here we in the midst of a very mild autumn. We are picking olives in the sunshine, a great improvement on last year when there were no olives and the year before when it poured with rain and the hillsides turned into a quagmire. I have returned to live in the house and that gives me the opportunity to try all the facilities for myself: to fix that dripping tap and the door that scuffs the floor, to replace a broken insect screen and to draw up a list of priority varnishing for the springtime. The stores are filling with chestnuts, wild mushrooms and a cornucopia of seasonable sweets and cakes and spirits. In just a month the town will open 'La casa di Babo natale' where Father Christmas will hold court and welcome visitors of all ages while supervising a team of local school children dressed as elves wraping gifts for local charities. Wishing you and your family a very happy Christmas, Peter

Lovely stay in Umbria

  • 5 of 5

Peter is a charming host, welcoming and helpful. His property is a delight - spacious enough for all 6 of us to be able to comfortably enjoy our week away. The views are amazing and the location works well - easy access, close enough to shops and restaurants but rural enough to offer a beautiful, unspoilt landscape. We were a family with 4 teenagers and all had a lovely holiday so I would highly recommend the accommodation, the location and Peter himself as a generous and informative host.

Owner's Response: Thank you Lisa for your generous remarks. I try very hard to ensure that my guests are comfortable and have memorable holiday. A large part of the reward is meeting families such as yours, guiding you towards places that I think you will enjoy visiting and seeing your evident enjoyment on your return. It makes all the effort so worthwhile. Do return one day. You will be most welcome. Peter

A true gem

  • 5 of 5

For us, Peter's villa have lived up to all expectations and exceeded many. It is a really beautiful house located on the MCdV hillside. A bit tricky to find but once you get there WOW will probably be your first and second words. We have been there two years in a row even though we usually do not go back to places we’ve already been to.

It's a perfect place to stay if you are two families traveling together. The house is big and comfortable and there are bedrooms and bathrooms on both floors so there is no problem having your private space even when sharing with others. The kitchen is modern and is outfitted with everything you need.

The pool is large and really magnificent! There are several sunbeds and lots of space available so you can always move in to the sun or the shadow depending on what you want. The views from the poolside are beautiful, you can see further down the valley for many kilometers. The pool is perfectly maintained by Peter and its deep enough on one side for diving and playing. On the other side it’s not as deep and our 5 year old learned to swim there.

The owner, Peter, is so hospitable and helpful and made both our stays perfect. He made us feel very welcome and comfortable and had lots of tips about things to see and places to go. Things are easy with Peter, any problems are solved efficiently and as he is a native English speaker there is no risk of misunderstandings.

There is always a certain amount of trepidation when booking a place online, but as soon as we arrived our anxiety was put to rest. This villa is a beauty, set in the hills of Umbria. Remote, yet never too far from a supermarket, or something to do.

We were there for 10 days, and spent almost every day at the house by the beautiful infinity pool. The house has bucket loads of space - a large kitchen with lots of room for prep, very large living area and a table and chairs.

Peter visited regularly, but was never intrusive. He provided us with white wine and delicious olive oil. There are fig trees everywhere you look and they were so perfectly ripe that they tasted like jam. So sweet! Peter maintained the pool and was very attentive to our needs.

I could go on and on raving about this place. Comfy beds, lots of space, clean and modern bathrooms, fly screen doors and windows on every opening with a view to absolutely die for. There was ample room for us - 2 couples with a separate bedroom for each of our little ones. We could in fact have had a 3rd family in there too, because the children's rooms all had either double or twin beds in them.

I cannot talk highly enough of this house - it's a lovely cool building in stunning countryside. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
